    May 27, 2012 - Pale Man costume from Pan's Labyrinth #1

I've been working on this costume off and on since last November (2011). I've come pretty far on it, but since I still have quite a bit to do still, I figured I still had time to give updates on it's progression.

I seem to have a severe weakness for eyeless monsters, I should probably see a shrink about this obssesion...

These first two pics were taken after an hour to an hour and a half after starting the sculpt.

These are after a couple more hours...

It's like he knows he's on the t.v.

    wp_000664.jpg

    Closer to being finished.

    wp_000681.jpg

    Final head sculpture...

    paleman-final.jpg

I had some molding pics, but I can't seem to find them at the moment... so I'll move on to the first latex casting...

    wp_000830.jpg

    Final paint.

    paleman-final-paint.jpg

Here's the body sculpture early on...

    earlybody.jpg

Due to the weight of the clay my manniquin stand broke, so I had to lean him up against some boxes. I had to finish sculpting the front of the body before the backside. Luckily I was about 80% done with the backside so it's not too much of an issue.

Here's a final shot of the front and a shot with my clay dividing wall right before I went to mold.

    finalbody.jpg
    paleman-body-mold.jpg

I have since molded the front side and without a doubt I can say this is the largest mold I have ever made. I'm probably crazy for using ultracal instead of fiberglass because even with one side done, it's crazy heavy. Oh well, I'm crazy for the Pale man, so I'm sure everything will be ok!

I'll post more pics soon. I'll be finishing up the mold this weekend.

    Thanks for looking!

Thanks guys! I'm making it to be both a costume (latex) and for display (latex skin then soft polyfoam filled or use a self skinning poly, whichever is cheaper). I'm also going to make a smaller display with just the head and arms and hands.

Fake blood, no so much ( should be a bit darker, more brownish - orange ), but the sculpt and the skin texture are just amazing. Congrats ! o_O

Looks great! Gotta say it's good to see this character being made. One of my favorites. Still shocked you used plaster rather than fiberglass. Keep up the good work.

Sometimes things are so cool, I hesitate to compliment what is obviously outstanding work, so I came back to this thread just to say that I admire your work here.

Wow, again thanks for all the great comments everyone!

Violentevo- I used nothing fancy for the paint, just the cheapie acrylics you find at Wal-Mart.

Davlin- Your absolutely right about the blood. I'll fix that for the final costume.

I should have some new pics by next week.

    ::UPDATE::

Here's the backside of the body. I had little to no reference on the backside so I had to do some guesswork.

    wp_000162.jpg

Here's the body encapsulated with ultracal.

    wp_000163.jpg

It took 4 of us to crack this baby open. That's me on the left, Yoni, Clint and Herman's head on the right. Heh, Herman's Head .

    wp_000180.jpg

It's heavy, but nothing too crazy. I'll be able to pour it no problem.

    Fantastic work.

One question... if you're planning on wearing it, how will you be able to see where you're going?

There's always a downside to eyeless monsters.

I'm making this at my buddy's shop, New site, here in east county San Diego. Its just a nice small shop in an industrial park.

LoL, yeah this guy sees out of his hands... or his nostrils and even then it's tough, I'll most likely cut eye slits in the mask and glue a mesh on the inside and just paint them to match his skin tone.

I failed to mention earlier that I have the arms and hands sculpted and molded already so the last thing to make are the feet/shoe covers.
I just ordered my latex, so hopefully soon I'll be able to post a near complete costume.

    Thanks for the comments!

Absolutely terrifying. Great work. I love this.

I was going to mention the blood on the neck/mouth also not looking up to par like the rest of your build. (It just looked like fake blood, had a sheen to it and the red itself) But someone mentioned it, but that is like saying that one strand of grass in a great field of green, is a little brown. Compared to the rest of your work, it is hardly much to blink an eye too.

I am just amazed at how quickly this has come along. I am definitely subscribed for the completed display/suit.

Ha, no worries, i think I would have perfected this whole blood color thing by now, but I'm working on it. Thank you for the great comment and complement!
