I was thinking about getting into this as well and I was doing a little research and was looking into subscribing to Stan Winston's School of Character Arts online for instruction videos and how to's etc... Hope this shines a little light for ya. Good luck!
I suggest starting at the Smooth-on website, as they have TONS of step-by-step photo and video tutorials
I think it wouldn't hurt to have a little experience in basic latex mask making before you tackle silicone. It might be worthwhile to make some mistakes on cheaper materials first (in different molds, of course).
I second that, although I would never tell anyone they shouldn't jump right into something, its the best way to learn, but in this case getting your feet wet with latex masks would prep you for the pains (and expenses) of making silicone masks. Platinum silicone can be a temperamental material, you would have better immediate results with latex. Then again if you have the money and time to burn, I won't hold you back, dig in and have fun!
