MadCityHaunt's 2014 Jun-Jul Sculpture Contest Entry

Hey guys I am going to take another crack at the competition. I feel like participating in these contests is really helping me get a feel for sculpting and having a deadline helps keep me on track!

For this round I am going to be sculpting a mask on a headform in Chavant NSP Medium (Green). I’m going to call this mask “The Brawler” and it will be a slightly exaggerated human form with a strong jaw line and gladiator’esque features. Also probably some slight scarring from previous fights! This will be a sculpt I can eventually make into a latex mask.

My skill level is beginner but the previous contests have given me good experienced and pushed me to work hard at improving my sculpting! I have also been studying some of the Stan Winston videos in order to try and improve my skill level. (Also, all the awesome artists here on the RPF really force you to push yourself!)

If I had any tips to offer it would be that time management is key, small details really bring your sculpt to life, and if you are working with oil based clays do yourself a favor and sculpt somewhere warm with access to an oven.

Good luck to everyone in the contest! I look forward to the amazing work that I know people will bring to the table!

Hey guys, I got off to a slow start on this sculpt because I had another project going on with a prop build I was doing. Here is a picture of the prop I built called Hydrotherapy (not sculpt related) just so you know I wasn’t slacking off ;)

Anyway, here is a picture of the new sculpt I started for The Brawler. I started blocking out and working on the general shape on July 4th. (You can see some of my reference in the background.)

I wasn’t happy with the initial shape as it felt similar to the Dr. Jekyll half of my first sculpt because I was conforming to the head-form too much, so I decided to revamp the initial shape and I am happier with the direction it’s heading now!

That is an awesome prop man! How big is that?

Awesome start on the brawler, not sure if it's common but most of my sculptures of guys end up looking the same. Did you change up your clay?

Thanks Jon, it’s about 3’ feet across by 18” deep. The tallest tubes are probably <18” inches.

Thanks man, I have been going back and forth. I essentially ripped the entire face off at one point and tried to refine. It has been taking a lot of fighting with my brain to sculpt what I am actually seeing in my reference as opposed to what I think I am seeing.

Hoping to have this done in time to submit for the contest!
