    Jun 17, 2012 - Kryptonite prop #1

    Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to scupting for prop making purposes (being a baker i've sculpted marzipan, sugar paste and modeling chocolate) and i have a few questions.

I intend to make a kryptonite display for a friend of mine. It would be similar to this

But with a different base and no glass dome.

For the kryptonite part i was going to sculpt it out of polymer clay (sculpey), make a silicon mold and cast it out of a clear resin (not sure which one yet) to which i would add a green dye (again not sure which one). Then it occurred to me that, since I'm not going to make more than one, the mold would be kind of wasted. I started looking into clear modeling clays (not knowing if they exist), thinking I could just sculpt it out of that and be done with it.

I found this: Clear Clay | HobbyLink Japan but I'm really not sure if it's worth it. Has anyone worked with this in the past, or any other clear modeling material?

If not, what do you guys think is my best option?

You could just get a clear quartz cluster and paint it green. Transparent green paint is pretty much at any hobby shop, and it's a heck of a lot easier than sculpting or molding.

Thanks hydin, I'll definetly try that if I can find a quartz cluster of the right size

A similar option might be the crystal "growing" kits from science & education stores.
