    Jul 11, 2012 - Help with casting a cowl. #1

    Hi all,

I have just finished sculpting my Batman cowl I have just made a silicone and bandage mold of the sculpt, as you can imagine I'm quite excited and can't wait to make my cowl I need a few questions answered though.
How do I actually go about making a wearable cowl? Are there any full tutorials I should read? What should it be made of? I've seen different threads saying latex, urethane rubber( 40, 60 as in stiffness I think?). And how do I go about actually cast it, I've heard a "Slush Cast" and a "Dwell Cast" thrown around on many threads.
Every single answer will be very much appreciated!

I know that Monstermakers.com has a slip latex that is specific for the Batman cowl/costume. Mask Making Latex - Bat Black - Quarts and Gallons - Latex Compounds - Casting Compounds - Flexible - CASTING AND PAINTING - The Monster Makers
As for slush casting, you pour in the component and slush it around, making sure the liquid coats everything important. When you have the desired thickness built up, you can prop the mold up and allow the excess to run out.
Hope this helps. I've only been doing this for a few years.

Casting and skinning Flex Foam - YouTube This video seems handy for what you're looking for

Minus the foam step of course, and with different materials.

So glad I could help! I actually learned how to slush cast working with hard props and smooth cast.

Just a note: I like to fill my neg to the top with latex-leaving it for about 20 minutes, so the plaster can soak up some of the liquid, THEN pour it off(Monstermakers should have a pic of the rig to build for tipping it back out). Just a thought
