May 31, 2012 - Hello, I have a question about acrylic paint and latex? #1

I purchased a latex mask online, and painted it with a gloss acrylic paint. Its been almost two days and the mask is sticky? The paint doesn't come off, but the mask is sticking to itself and the pair of goggles i'm wearing with it leave a slight imprint, almost like pealing off a sticker. What can I do?

Im no expert on this subject however with an educated quess id say you may have used the wrong paint, did you air brush or hand paint the mask.

The final paint could be a bit sticky due to the Rubber Cemenet. try powdering the mask with a translucent face powder (same stuff girls use to powder their noses), or can use a flexible transparent sealant sprayed on top of it.

dont take my advice though, im sure some experts will be along soon

Okay, thank you for the reply. I think the translucent powder will work, but I will wait and see if there are other suggestions. I dont want the powder to make my paint loose its "glossy" finish.

There are two possibilities. Either it is an incompatible paint and it's not wanting to fully cure, or you laid it on too thick and it is curing slowly.

You said it is an acrylic paint, but what kind? Latex acrylic? Acrylic Laquer? Acrylic Enamel? It doesn't help that most paint manufacturers don't like to label their paints clearly with that information and are often misleading.

If it is Latex acrylic, then laying it on too thick would also make it dry slowly, especially given that it is a gloss. Laying it on a head form and warming it with a hair dryer usually helps speed up the drying process.

    Hi chelseasaurus,

I could work it out for you, but need information. What brand is the paint? Was it brush or airbrush applied and did you use any mediums? Try not to powder it, but if you do, adding a gloss over the top will remove the dull powder look.

Typically with latex, you need more latex to bond the paint to it. To do this you need some liquid latex or prosaide to add to your paint mixture. That will help the paint bond with the latex. Otherwise it will remain sticky like you describe.

That or it will not bond and flake off. Also, if you use to much Pros Aide in the mix it will get the gloss effect you want, but will remain tacky like you describe. Powder is one of the few ways to remove the tackyness. But, it will also diminish the gloss effect.

You can always spray crystal clear overtop of your finished product for a shiney finish

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not quite sure what kind of acrylic paint, I just know I bought it at Joann's and it was cheap. But it was paint and brush not airbrush. I washed all of the paint off and then re applied with 50/50 paint water mixture. I let it dry all night and sprayed krylons flexible acrylic gloss sealant. It's been an hour and the mask is still incredibly sticky. Maybe I used to cheap paint? What are some suggestions I could get at Joann's that would work more efficiently? I was thinking powdering it down with translucent powder then spraying the high gloss over?

    edit:
It is a water based all purpose acrylic paint.

Aha! it was not a latex mask at all, but vinyl that is why your paint is sticky, you need to use vinyl paints like, cell vinyl
