Jul 28, 2012 - Gomorrean Guard Latex Mask Build #1

Hi People, I am a first generation Star Wars fan... I am 40 years young and went from Sindbad the sailor (which was amazing) and on TV Dr Who which I was hiding behind the sofa when the cibermen lurched in to the seen like a steel clad mummy trying to grab its victims...

Then along came a guy called George Lucas with a film called Star Wars.......... WOW!!!, how can I explain what it was like to view this film? today it has loads of other films to compair it against but then it was rather like the sequence in the Wizard of Oz when it went from black and white to colour.

The film started in the running position and pulled you along with the best visual effects and sounds that you could imagine and threw you in the deep end of a galactic battle far far away... with black Lords and white nights, princesses and robots..... Space ships, monsters and army's that rode dinosaurs threw the desert, sords that were like a magic lazier type of blade.

I remember feeling shocked at how brutal it was in parts, as a young tender boy when I saw the smouldering skeletons of uncle Owen and aunt Boru, that was very scary. I could go on and on about this film........

Let me just say I love Star Wars, This is one of the masks I have made to bring myself closer to the creatures I love from the original star wars films.

I only use basic tools and materials, I say that they are 1/1 scale but I do not messier my masks from the actual scale versions used. I use the basic size of an adult male person and start from that point

Thanks guys, yes Heatshock you have seen all but a few photos of my Gammo, This one is going to my good friend David who dose not need a working mask so I have sculpted eyes and fitted them within the mask. this then becomes a display only item.

I have dug out a photo of the sculpt being molded, I am changing my molds to resin/fiber glass from this point on so last look at my aggregate molds, they work but are heavy and bulky. cheers

Now the mold is made and cleaned out I start to put in layers of thickened latex, three or four layers is enough to give a skin of about 3 or 4 mm.

This is the skins streight from the mold, I dont cast the head in one full mask.
I glue the two half's together, this rabidly allows the latex to cure and makes removing the skins from the molds far better to do, because when latex has cured it sticks to itself so easy.. and that can ruin the details and even a hole mask. brushing the skins with talk will stop the latex being so sticky.

There was a few things that went wrong with this cast, the horns did not dry well at all, that was because my latex is air curing only, if the points of a mold like horns or teeth are so recessed the latex stays fluid. what I then did is make a mold of the horns only and then the air can get to the latex.

This is the head core, its a closed cell hard foam cast that is first filled in to the latex head skin. When cured the skin is peeled from the foam core, then its cut to size so it fits nice within the latex skin. The core will hold the skin in shape.

Painting as with all my latex stuff is Acrylic paint mixed with the latex, light washes of colour are far better than block colour.

I miss judged the colour at first because it goes on allot lighter than when it drys but its all a learning process.

I was told at this point by friends that the nose was all wrong....

so I sculpted a new nose and added it to the mask once cast in latex, This is the old nose..

the reason I missed the nose is because most or my referance was this small figure...

As you can see the nose is as I first sculpted it.
After a check from an old mag I have tucked away I was happy that the nose was ok.

I then quickly sculpted some eyes or should I say one eye and did a test mold in resin that turned out very well
(think my molds will be resin from now on)
The two cast latex eyes were painted and fixed in place so this build is finished.

    Wowzers!

I made one of these for Halloween for a friend, many many moons ago, out of foam, ended up looking more like a Muppet, which was kinda cool.

However seeing this I'm thinking it's time for a re-visit.
