Jun 2, 2012 - Evil Skull Gas Mask WWII Stylized #1

I guys! I haven't posted here much but things have been picking up so I thought I show this! Sculpture was done in oil clay and cast in latex with acrylic sockets, respirator vent, and actual lenses. Went for a WWII look. Made them for a music video i'm working on. Hope you like the photos! More to come.

That's looking creepy as hell... would **** my pants if I saw those in use before a gas attack.

    I like it.

I want to make one of those old masks from the '30s, with one big filter coming out the front like that.

That looks nice. You should add some highlights or something to make the subtle details pop a bit more.

Friko: Thank you for pointing that out. I was thinking the same thing. Black seems to mute the forms. I know artist aren't supposed to think this; but I'm afraid i'll ruin it lol Thinking of dry brushing some silver?

Thanks for looking guys! It means a lot!

I agree, you've captured something very dark in this design, really nice!

Very cool. And quite creepy. I wonder, though, how it would look painted like bone? Seems like at a distance the black hides the details.

Wow, amazingly creepy! I love them! Also yeah, a version painted like bone would look amazing, gas masks have always given me the chills!

I agree very creepy and it has a slight feel of those weird masks the kids wear in The Wall to me for some reason. I think bone colored would be neat and might even work with some more bone like details to the masks.

Wow! Pretty cool... Love the sculpt! My vote goes for skin tone paint though! So it has the appearance of melting flesh...

Yeah the first picture gave the creepiest effect, with the tan colored mask.

Awesome suggestion. I'm considering doing a re-paint in a bone color scheme esp since everyone else has recommended it. I'll have an update soon!

Thanks again guys for all the feed back!

I like that idea! I'm going to try both. It would def do the sculpture more justice

Yeah i think dry brushing some silver would do the trick, subtly though. Yeah, that's something i had to get over myself. Gotta have a never look back attitude towards your work. If you mess up, you can always do a better one next time.

The black is still pretty neat looking but there's something about the skin/organic look of the first pic that has a whole creppy cool appeal to it. Both versions are awesome but if you do another one of these, I'd love to see you play with a whole face/gas mask hybrid look. Looks good though, keep at it.

Friko: Thanks for the encouragement ! Made these for a music video to be shot 3rd week in June so I still have time to "plus" them ( made 3).

The first photo is the sculpture ( chavant nsp medium clay). Looking at the sculpt pic in comparison to the final paint up I can't believe how much of the detail disapeared. I'll post an update soon. Again guys, thank you for your input!

IMHO it looked better in the sculpt that the cast because of the goggle lenses extending and giving a lot more depth to the eyes and balancing out the filter

    very creepy

Oh yeah, didn't notice that. My vote is on the extended eye pieces sticking out from the mask. Basically what is in the first picture rules: color, details, execution. With a little weathering and dirt in the crevices and the nose will further add to the skull appearance of the piece.

    Awesome.

Ooo!!! That is a good point, and an awesome idea!

Too Much Garlic : Good call on the nose.

You guys are awesome and the ideas seem to go on and on!
Thought I'd upload a few more pictures of the sculpt since people seem to enjoy the first picture so much!

The protruding lens sockets make the sculpt appear more lopsided then it is.

    Pictures:
