Daredevil Cowl Sculpt FINISHED Pics added

So, my partner and I had been working on a daredevil costume a while ago, and it got pushed onto the back burner for various reasons, one of which being lack of suitable cowl.

He received a sculpting armature, as well as some tools and Chavant NSP for his birthday a few weeks ago, and decided to tackle the cowl himself!

It's his first time ever doing a cowl sculpt, and previous to this the only thing he had done with the chavant was a hal jordan eyemask (which needs a bit more cleanup, but went really well!)

Unfortunately, we've been a bit neglectful in terms of photographing the cowl as it's been getting sculpted, but we do have a few photos, so I thought I'd share the progress that's been made so far!

Here it is very, very rough as the shapes were still being added to the cowl, as well as bulking it out to be able to comfortably fit his head:

After a few days with about 1-2 hours of work each, the cowl was brought forward with some smoothing and shaping across the brow area to this stage:

As you can see, ears have also been added to the cowl by this point, since we decided it was looking a bit bare without them!

This is the current state of the cowl, with horns finally added:

Whilst the cowl itself is Chavant NSP Medium, the horns are resin castings made from a master that was created by making a small rough horn out of milliput, which was then attached to a 5p coin, and covered in bondo and sanded into shape.

There's still a bit of work to be done to the cowl, mainly just more smoothing, but it'll soon be ready to go under paint, and then silicone so that urethane copies can be made!

Thanks =]

More evening is being done today before more smoothing, trying to remove as much of the bumpy surface as possible, tedious and time consuming, but want this to look good!

Re: Daredevil Cowl Sculpt

We've finally finished the sculpt!

Here's a turnaround of the clay master before it was sealed up:

With a few closer images of it:

Then it got sealed for moulding, which I'll begin doing tonight, it was sprayed with a filler primer we like, then a coat of red over the top of that, the filler primer just gives a nice texture to the final pieces when cast from urethane.

Here is a turnaround of the piece, after it was sealed:

And again, here's a few more photos closer up of the finished and sealed sculpt

It's certainly changed a lot since the first photo, and I'm extremely happy with how it looks, especially considering it's the first sculpted cowl we've ever done!

As I said earlier, this will be going under silicone later, which hopefully will go smoothly, then I'll get the first casting out of it!

Re: Daredevil Cowl Sculpt

I have now laid up the fibreglass for the mother mould, tomorrow it'll get holes drilled for bolting it closed, and the edge will be cleaned up.

Fingers crossed it works, and I haven't buggered anything up!

We finally finished with this today!

Got the mother mould cleaned up and ran a resin casting out of the mould first, it'll be used if I need to recreate the mould in the future:

It also helped clean out the mould, as it had some crap left in it from the master.

After that I did a urethane pull, admittedly this is tinted a tad darker than I'd like, but I'll live, seeing as it's the first pull, it's a bit thin in areas too, but at least I know now that I need to use a bit more urethane in it than I did this time.

I am very happy with how this has come out, and it fits Lee perfectly, just need to get a better pull and we can get his daredevil finished =D

Thanks Spardax =]

Should be ordering some new materials to run a proper casting of this in a few days, so I'll be able to show it off properly, in the right colour this time!
