    Jun 23, 2012 - Commissioned Arkham Asylum / City Sculpture #1

I wanted to show work I did last year. Pictures of this cowl have been floating around a lot on the internet and very few people know I even sculpted the thing, so I felt after a year it’s a good time to let interested people know of my work. It was a commission for an Arkham Asylum / City cowl. I spent quite a bit of time studying the graphic models before starting and initially had trouble with the provided armature, but over came it after scraping the piece twice. These are just a sample of the pictures I took along the way from start to finish. I always enjoy seeing I sculpture start out looking nothing like you intended it to and then finally reaching a finished state. I hope learning sculptors can learn from these few pics and help them overcome the challenges with sculpting anything. Enjoy

Very nice! Are the ewars solid clay or did you build an armature?

Thank you for the kind comments.

Clay used for this sculpture was Chavant J-525 not a clay I would recommend sculpting with, has a very bad odor from the sulfur and you have to take certain measures if you mold with silicone.

Ears are all clay no armature underneath.

Great work on the symmetry, Your lines look awesome! What are you planning on casting it out of? Urethane Rubber or Foam Latex?

It's for a urethane cowl. Would love to try foam latex, but I have no experience using that material.

I have never worked with this clay, does it harden by itself or does it need to baked or something? because of course you could not paint the sculpture if it was still soft just curious on how it works.

The clay has to be heated with an oven otherwise it is very hard and you can't work with it. The clay actually will harden back up rather quickly once removed from the oven. I also use a heat gun to help get the clay soft when on the sculpture. I tend to add what I need than take away. Not an ideal clay if you are doing something organic, but something more machined. Like I mentioned earlier this particular clay is sulfur based so your hands at the end of the day tend to smell bad and it's a though smell to get rid of. I don't use this clay anymore. After 3 sculptures using it I decided I got my monies worth out of it and tossed it.

Okay got ya Keith, so you have to heat it so it will soften, I was thinking the opposite it's a beautiful piece.
