Good God man. I have to keep reminding myself that you're a "newbie!" This is by far, one of my most favorite threads on the RPF! Great job, Leigh.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Thanks guy's :)
Yeah, I'm looking forward to running a cast, I might see if I can pop one out today.
Couple of things might hinder running a cast ATM though, I've just washed the moulds so there'll be water in some of the detail & its 27 degrees here today & the resin I have will set in 2.5-3 minutes! So I may have to try to just cast the face end of the head, at least if it comes out OK I can use it for sculpting the lip's & tendons onto, so it wont go to waste.

Having managed to wash all the old paint off successfully I've noticed a few (only a few) bubbles but not on the moulds inner surface! The bubbles have formed between the thixo coat & the detail coats. If I'd put only one skin or detail coat on, I'd be having problems! The surface of the bubble would be very thin & likely to break easily, leaving a hole in the mould surface... not good!
However I applied two detail coats & as a result the surface of the bubble is quite thick & less likely to break... Result!! :)
Still, I'm thinking about injecting a little non-thixo silicone into the bubbles using a syringe :unsure

Fred, I'd love to own a copy of that book but its just too expensive at £80-£100! & as much as £200!!!! :eek I just cant warrant spending that much on a book ATM :(

Bubbles in between coats after thixo are common...and not a problem. I wouldn't worry about it...and I absolutely would not inject silicone into them. The injected silicone may cause the air bubble pocket to swell, shrink or warp as it starts to set. I really wouldn't bother with it. Besides it's such an organic sculpt that even if they do show signs in the casting, they'll seem as if they were sculpted in there.
Loving the mold as much sculpt...can't wait to see the whole thing.

Thank you David :)
I guess I wont be injecting those bubbles then :)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Yeh, seconded, injecting silicone may be a good fix but could equally well cause warps. Last resort I think e.g. if your resin gets good and hot you may get dents in the casting as the air inside expands, or if they start to tear out and leave big flaws.

The cast has come out well, no bubbles, the flashing came off easily & no leaking :D

I used 1100cc's of resin... its not enough!
I'm going to need to use about 2.5 litres, the cast is thin.
The coverage is surprisingly even although I orientated it towards the front & yes the mould is heavy & it was quite hard work rotating it :D
Overall I'm chuffed!! :D

Wow Leigh it looks absolutely fantastic...very clean and crisp details. You should build a roto moulder to help you pal :)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

SQUEAL!!!

No real surprise by this point that the first cast would be near-perfect, you've been so bloody meticulous it is almost spooky. :lol

:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

PS if you pop him back in the mould and whack some expanding foam in him chances are he'll be perfectly usable.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Thanks guy's :)

I think for the moment I'll stick to doing it by hand. If I use the 2.5-3.5 minute setting stuff I can handle rotating it by hand, it also gives me a bit of control over the evenness of coverage. With this one I orientated it to the front as I didn't expect it to be a good cast, my thought being, if the front comes out OK I can use it for the lips & tendons, that's exactly what's happened.

This one is thick enough at the front end to be useful, it not at the back end though, using this one for the dome is out.
The next one will get more plastic & I'll aim to get a thicker all over coat, then I can use it for the dome :)

The plastic doesn't seem to have clumped anywhere, just seems to be a fairly even coat.
I'll cut this one in half, I can use the front, the back will get thrown away & it'll allow me to inspect the inside properly.

I am really pleased with it though :) As I said, I really didn't expect this first pull to come out well, it was a nice surprise :)

Exceptional work!! Looking forward to seeing a finished cast. Your attention to detail is amazing.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

What an amazing first cast. Pure quality.

Like Nwerke said - pop it back into the mold and fill it with expansion foam.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Leigh at the least I would suggest you run the mould a few times before you cut this cast up. Be certain your good results are easily repeatable before you do anything drastic! :lol
