Aug 2, 2012 - Abe Sapien- New Painting Pics on 2nd page #1

    Hello Everyone,

Long time watcher, first time posting here. I thought I would show everyone my Abe Sapien Sculpt I sculpted a while back. He has been quite the process for me, he was my first real sculpture ever, so he took me a while. I did eventually mold him, and cast him, now I am just trying to get the courage to go ahead and paint him. Hopefully this thread will give me the push I need to just do it already. So, after I post up these pictures there will hopefully be more to come of the final product.

    Thanks for looking!

And a image of the mold (in case anyone is interested):
I did a silicone matrix mold with a stone jacket, I have some process pictures, but I don't know if anyone is interested in that on here.

Nice work... looks like a sharp sculpt and a clean mold (which is half the battle!)

What sort of casting did you make? Resin? Silicone?

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses. Best of luck with it!

    Thank you!

I"ve casted it twice with resin- one just a solid white resin, and the other is a translucent light blue resin. So one I will make look like a bronze bust and the other the real deal (hopefully)

I'm definitely interested in Process pictures. I love seeing how everyone approaches mold making for different materials. The more pictures the better. Awesome sculpt. Can't wait to see it painted up. Have you cOnsidered cold casting it with bronze powder instead of painting it bronze?

Thank you everyone, for the interest and the kind words =)

I actually hadn't heard of cold casting until after I had casted it up. If i decide to make another bronze one, I might do that just to try it out the process- or maybe on something smaller at first. This guy takes up a lot of material even with a slush casting.

I'll post molding pictures in a sec, I took a lot less than I had thought, so I'll try to explain through the pictures too.

    Beginning of the matrix mold-

I crystal cleared my piece and covered it in saran wrap. I decided to lay it down on its side because I feel like it isn't as hard fighting gravity while working with stone when making the jacket. I have at least a "1/2 of clay covering the entire piece, with keys on the edge so the stone jacket will lock into itself and the ribs on top of where the sculpture is so the silicone will lock into the stone jacket. The toilet paper tube goes down all the way to my sculpture so there will be an area to pour the silicone into. And at the bottom there is that hump so I will be able to get the casting material inside once its all said and done.

    Stone Jacket- side one

Honestly, I regret doing it out of stone, I wish I would have done fiberglass or some other light material since I was going to slush cast it. But, you live and learn. So as you can see I made the stone jacket all the way up to that clay wall, that way i know i have a nice even edge all the way around.

    Side 2 (wrong image)

Sorry, I forgot to take an image of this side. But its basically the same thing. only you don't put clay down where the stone jacket is. You just Vaseline the stone, and put tiny keys on the side for pry points. However, you clay up the rest of the sculpture the same- making sure your ribs match up with the other side and there is still a toilet paper tube going down to your sculpture.

    Silicone

Again, sorry I don't have many process photos for this part. Once you are done with the stone jacket you take off one side of it and empty out the clay (the jacket should look like the image on the the right side) Keep that clay and weigh it so you know how much silicone to use and you dont waste any material. on the otherside, the clay should be nice an smooth and even against your sculpture (and of course take the saran wrap off of the sculpture) You should also put keys in the clay so the silicone will have something to lock itself into. I just used the end of a paint brush and made little divets all over it. Also, make sure there is clay at the bottom where that hump was made earlier, on both sides, so you will be able to get the casting material in later. Close the jacket tight, fill up one side, wait for it to cure, and do it all over again for the second side.

Another note- before putting in the silicone, drill holes into the stone jacket (yes, thats me power tooling it up in my summer dress) to act as "bleeders" otherwise the silicone will make air pockets and screw up your awesome matrix mold.

(reference the image at the top for final mold look)
Bam, you got yourself a matrix mold- now cast that sucker up again and again and again til your fingers bleed =)

    Awesome sculpt.
    Very clean looking mold too.
I would love to see more process pictures, I think they are the most informative.
I will be making a mold soon for a sculpture I've been working on and pics always help out.
Can't wait to see Abe complete.

That looks fantastic! Love the moulds, very clean.

I have a load of very large high res photos of the test prosthetics of Abe if you are interested? My friend has the piece in his workshop. It's unpainted apart from the gills but has all the textures to see......

That is a CRISP mold, well done! I really like how the glove mold (although it looks like a 1-piece glove) has those tabs to either side for stability. Very smart, I'm going to have to try that.

Can't wait to see the pulls!

I am excited everyone seems to enjoy the piece! I am going on vacation this weekend, but hopefully I will have him painted up by the end of next week.

Trenton- i wish i had more progress pictures, i just never thought about taking them while doing it. It was just "and the next step is and the next step is and the next step is..." in my mind. If i do another piece i'll try to take more pictures.

sskunky- thats awesome, I love reference pictures, any kind. and it looks like your friend has a really amazing piece there. is he planning on trying to paint that himself? Or I am guessing just put it up somewhere as a collectable. Either way I'm jealous, I'm a huge Steve Wang fan.

Wow, great sculpt, love this character. Pro mould too. The stone jacket must weigh a ton eh? I always tell myself 'never again!' but it's so much faster and less painful than glass, lol.

I guess it΄s a pic of the original sculpt, given SSkunky΄s connections
