Jul 27, 2012 - What are the performance specifications of "The Bat"? #1

It's a rotorcraft but also clearly had jets with afterburner.
    So got me thinking.
Airspeeds, service ceiling, rate of climb?

These days I can't imagine something about it from the studios
for fun. Curious what the inspiration was other then make
something unique. Generally they have had some inspiring
    material to start from.

To me it looks like it shouldn't fly to be honest. I've never seen anything like it but there is a book on Dark Knight tech but not sure if anyone got it yet.

I've got the book at home and it has some nice photos. There is also a fold-out orthographic blueprint of it for anyone who wants to build a model. The thing just looks weird to me and non-aerodynamic. Almost like an anti-plane like I suppose the tumbler is an anti-car. I'm not an expert in this field and the real test would be if someone ends up building a Bat RC version.

As far as specs go I imagine they could say it goes Mach 2 and has a flight ceiling of 85000 feet! Did you ever see the tumbler specs in some of the "making of" books? Lol....some good stuff there.

Never seen the tumbler specs but at least it's within the reason of actually being what it's meant to be without the need for a ton of visual effects. It jumps a good distance without wires and drives and i bet would make a neat armored combat vehicle. The bat looks like it would fly like a brick.

I figured that it incorporated the WIG effect in it's design; and used pure power for just about every other maneuver. My 2 cents anyways.

According to the wiki it's loosely based on an Apache Helocopter and a Boeing Osprey.

I saw it in true IMAX last night and it appeared much more dynamic on the giant screen. The first viewing it seemed more static and I wasn't impressed with its landing position. After the destroyed Tumbler becomes the Batpod in TDK I almost expected a more transformer style approach. However, since we never see Batman eject, I did not think it was such a stretch to imagine that The Bat has similar capabilities, and that Batman never actually left Gotham with the bomb.

I really like The Bat. Maybe we will get a model of it.

It's Christopher Nolan's Batman, so everything about the "The Bat" is possible and can/will be developed soon.

Honestly, I doubt such a machine could fly. I just can't see how it's possible. I'm no aeronautical engineer, but wouldn't having the two pods in front and below for the forward thrust screw up the ability of the rotors under the body to provide lift?

I saw an article recently where it was discussed. I can't remember if it was in EW or PM. If I remember I'll look tonight. It didn't go into much detail really though. Quoted a former aeronautics engineer as saying some of the technology was realistic, but still a lot of Hollywood.

Exactly. Something that bumpy, no way.

Don't get me wrong, if someone wants to build me one, I'll fly it. LOL.

I see it comes in black.

Behind the cockpit of The Bat it looks very flat despite its segmented exoskeleton appearance. Could a covered helicopter actually fly? What if it had turbine arms, and a whale tail?

Wish I could find the hot wheels "The Bat" but scalpers are a plenty round these parts.

Well cockroaches can fly, and the Bat looks like a giant cockroach, so why not?

It seems to be incredibly nose heavy. Everything is in front of the rotors.

I think the possibility of the "bat" flying is more realistic than an entire aircraft carrier which can fly as well as turn invisible.

Yeah, but the Avengers universe doesn't pretend to be a real universe... with gods and guys frozen in a block ice walking around.

The appeal of the Nolan Bat universe (from what I've been told and have read) is 'omg it's so dark and real.'

Actually invisible jet comes from DC, not Marvel and it's avengers... It's Wonder Woman's jet, according to the comics. Don't know if she still has it, with all the reboot and stuff, but initially she had one.
But I do agree, it wouldn't fit in Nolanverse, or it could, but like James Bond's Aston Martin in Die Another Day, with some kind of cameras and camouflage panels. The Amazonian flying woman with a golden whip, not so much ^^
The Bat however reminds me of a VTOL aircraft (VTOL - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), so if they can do it today with plane, I don't have a problem seeing this thing flying despite its not so aerodynamical shape. It doesn't fly that fast neither, or not that we've seen of.

I was expecting all the "crap" on the top/back to unfold into wings but no. As it is, it looks like that the designers took a bunch of left over military aircraft model kit parts, shook them up, threw some glue on it, and said, "here ya go - The Bat".

I always figured that the Bat was just a spare tumbler they threw wings and engines on lol.

That's how they did the Tumbler design.
    Kit bashing in Nolan's garage.
