Star Wars needs to go away for a little while. Like Oprah. Or U2. Take a break. So people actually miss it.
Needs too and will are two very different things. As long as GL is alive and making him money Star Wars will be there in some format.
It's harder to take a break when the thing you're trying to avoid is nigh ubiquitous.
Now hang on a second there, partner. With the exception of ONE scene in Serenity, and some VERY general conceptual elements, I'd say Firefly/Serenity lift very little from Star Wars. Yes, there is an "Empire" (in this case referred to as the Alliance) and there was a civil war, but in FF/S, the "rebels" lost and we're witnessing the aftermath. Yes, there's also a beat-up old ship with a scruffy captain and his stoic second in command, but that's a pretty broad concept. And yes, there is the "Mal shot first" scene in Serenity, meant to be a direct "See, George? THIS is how you do it" moment. But outside of those elements, I think what you're seeing is actually the fact that both franchises "stole" from OTHER genres -- specifically westerns.
Firefly is FAR more of a "western in space" than Star Wars was, though. Star Wars has a few tips of the hat here and there, but for pete's sake there are episodes of Firefly where they ride around in covered wagons! And Mal always speaks with a sort of twangy accent. And people RIDE HORSES. Hell, the opening credits of the show have a herd of horses running.
Star Wars has Han Solo who sort of operates as a kind of gunslinger, but honestly, that happens for about 5 minutes on Tatooine and then the rest of the time he's just a scruffy guy on the run with a busted ship. So, yeah, while Firefly has that too, there's a hell of a lot more going on that is MARKEDLY different.
I think what people want when they say "Make it Starfly" or whatever is the FEELING of Firefly within the Star Wars universe. Or they just want more Firefly. That said, you might as well wish for a pet unicorn because neither's gonna happen this side of fantasyland.
I'd like for Mal to walk into the Gem, talk smack to Al, then get dealt with.
Oh, I don't disagree. The age of the western is well passed now. I think the only way you get away with it anymore is to do a "gritty and realistically harsh" western. Firefly wasn't really that. It was a good show, but one that the marketing guys had NO idea what to do with, so I tend to think they didn't even try.
Firefly was worth two dozen of any Star Wars property since 1983.
The TV show for me needs to be
1) Less "epic." Dear god, why can't we have a nice, small, simple, intimate setting now and then. ONe damn scene with no green screen. JUST ONE. God. Look at the Walking Dead. Or, you know, Firefly. That'd help your budget.
2) GET A REAL WRITER GORRAM IT! (see what I did there?). The PT films took some fine actors and gave them nothing to work with!
3) Return to the used universe/found item aesthetic of the OT. Visually, the PT looks like the cover of a bad fantasy novel you'd buy at the register at Walgreens. Yawn.
I envision this series as being like "Laverne and Shirley" except they are working at the factory that makes TIE fighters instead of the bottling company.![]()
The PT, and subsequent tinkering with the OT, was a reboot of sorts.
I would love to see a series about the early days of Han Solo and Chewbacca, before getting involved with the rebellion. The first episode would have Han and Chewie working as crew on a freighter, wanting to go into business for themselves. They get their chance when Han wins the Falcon from Lando. Han's first impression upon seeing the ship- "What a piece of junk!"![]()
That is, until the Rebel underground bombs the factory and executes them for being collaborators.
Your best bet is probably picking up Brian Daley's Han Solo trilogy. I think he also actually did a Lando trilogy, too, but I never read that one. And there's the Bantam or Del Ray trilogy that dealt with Han at a very early age (like, living on the streets of Corellia).
I think they should leave a bit of mystery to Han. I don't care all that much 'bout his childhood, his marriage to Leia, or anything else.
And, I mean, look at Boba Fett!
Ah, my mistake then.
FWIW, Daley did the NPR radio drama adaptations of the original scripts. They're pretty good, actually (well, the first two, anyway...). His Han Solo trilogy is fun.
DEADWOOD IN SPACE!!!!!!!!! FTW!
great idea,CTF. i'm sold!
Uncle George said that, not me. But, hey, what he says and what he does are two different things, so who knows what we'll get... still, that's a promising start.
****suckers.
Is this live action thing even going to happen?
I thought it was essentially canned as being way too expensive a proposition....?
Rich
It'll happen. Along with Episodes 7-9. And the Clone Wars musical. And Gungans: The Battle for Ewok City.
