    ET, Titanic, Twilight series, AVATAR.....
I don't know I would consider those two as movie Staples. Avatar is alright, but still don't know I would other than visual pleasantries.

But if Twilight is going to be considered a Movie staple, than consider me also as having NOT SEEN. And I don't see myself ever wanting to watch those.

And those lists really aren't that great. Sure they have good movies/songs/whatever the list is sometimes. But they are not consistent. I mean how is Casablanca the 2nd best film of all time in 1998, but then as of 2007, is the 3rd best film of all time? Did the people who make the list have a change of heart 10 years later? Did the estate of Marlon Brando pay off the AFI? Did people who made the first list retire/quit/pass away/didn't care anymore/forget? I could understand if it was bumped by a movie that was released in the time that had passed. That is fine. But it was bumped by a movie that had been out for 40 years already.

The General was released in 1927!?!?! As of 1998, it was not even considered one of the greatest 100 films ever. But 10 years later, it is now the 18th greatest movie of all time? Does that mean in 6 more years, Minority Report could crack the top 100? Maybe AFI revotes and makes The Towering Inferno # 41 all time?

Just wait - you'll feel LOST when you get there!!

As for the people who mentioned Blade Runner - I TRIED to watch it and couldn't. I shut it off after 30 mins.

I know I'll upset some Runner fans by saying this, but I hated it.

Hahaha. An amazing cast. I was just thinking of some movies that more than likely would never be on AFI's greatest lists. But I was more ranting on the point of movies changing place on the list so drastically after only 10 years, but yet the movies that were added in their place were movies that were out when the first list was created. So why not just have them on the list in the first place, and bump off the ones at the bottom of the list.

    Sorry Doug.

Yeah, that's definitely a problem. I remember about twenty years ago, a friend of mine had a double-page spread from some music publication (Rolling Stone, perhaps?) of the "top 500 songs of all time" on the wall. It was fun to peruse...but it was arbitrary at best. Definitely one to read with a grain of salt!

Yeah, I know. Problem is, whenever I'm faced with some spare time I never automatically default to 'watch a movie' mode. I always end up building something or fixing something.
Either that, or I rarely have someone to watch with.

But most of the others mentioned I have seen. Godfather is excellent. Scarface is VERY OVERRATED IMHO. I've heard the original is MUCH BETTER, but I've never seen that version. Shawshank is possibly my favorites of the movies listed, and Star Wars. Loath Xmas Story. Probably because I've seen it 752 times over the years. If I hear "You'll shoot your eye out" once more on Christmas, I may not participate in Christmas anymore.
    Couldn't. Agree. More.

Scarface (1983) has some quotable dialogue, but is otherwise easily forgettable in my opinion; haven't seen the original. A Christmas Story is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Back to the main topic, I have never seen, and will never willingly see, Gone With The Wind. A girl I dated in high school loved the movie so much that it was all she would talk about at least 90% of the time. I got so sick of hearing about it that I have absolutely no desire to see it.

I've also haven't seen Casablanca...yet. I even have the DVD, given to me as a gift; just haven't made time to watch it. I did finally see The Maltese Falcon for the first time earlier this year, so that's one off the list.

The Hope and Crosby "road" pictures. I've seen one of them, but I couldn't tell you which one it was. A good friend loves them, and made a proposition one day--if I sat and watched one and didn't like it, he'd never try to convince me to watch them again. I watched it, didn't like it much, and that was that. I just don't get the whole Hope/Crosby thing.

I'm sure there are others, but they're not coming to mind at the moment.

The closest I've gotten to seeing either of those was Sahara, which I did enjoy.

I have a feeling it's because the AFI is group of people. In 2008 the group was likely very different than the one in 1998 - therefore movies change place, drop off the list, jump into the list etc. You pick 50 people randomly off this board and divide them into two groups of 25 and have them vote their top all time films and you'll likely get two different lists. Probably what happened with this list.

As for me, i've seen 52 on that list and as for notables, well, i'm 0-5 on the top 5 from 1998

We have all the Potter films on dvd but aside from the first one I haven't watched them either. All I can say to folks who don't watch older films is to give them a chance: 1930s mobster movies are pretty good as are 50s scifi if you don't mind the effects and cheesy writing.

Same here. I've known a number of people who'd always manage to throw quotes from the movie at me from time to time...like I'd recognize any of them!
I've no more interest in these movies than I would any gangster films: they're criminals...lock them up. End of story.

I see a few of you mentioned A Christmas Story, and I've always been puzzled by how many people seem to love it. Everyone from little old ladies to biker dudes! I'll never forget those guys, crowded around the tv giggling like kids watching it! Whenever I've seen it, I get angry. I just want to slap that stupid kid around (figuratively speaking) and tell him to stop being such a brain dead, gullible idiot.

Yeah, especially as today's movies are going to look and sound corny in time, too!
Not about corniness per se, but great fun can be had by watching Broken Arrow, and mentally replacing John Travolta with Steve Martin in his place. Something about that, as filmed even, would have made it hilarious!

I was put off by The Godfather and it's subject matter at first as well. Then I watched it and realized the best parts of the movie are about family and legacy, not the mafia aspects.

That must be it. Many fans of those movies are square, true-blue citizens...yet love these films like their own kids made them. Maybe I've been put off largely because people have spoken so glowingly of them, that that I feel too obligated to like them! I get similar doubts when I go to buy a familiar product and suddenly see "new improved formula" on the label!

It pissed me off. Instead of answering questions from the entire show, they spent the last season creating new ones and answered those.

I used to always fall asleep near the end of "Apocalypse Now". I finally saw the ending a few months ago. Did not like it.

I finally saw the first two Godfather movies recently. Seems over rated so far.

It's interesting: the first movie my mother saw in the theaters was The Wizard of Oz in its original release. I've wondered if the sequels of Star Wars weren't made, if it would have become "our" Wizard of Oz in years to come?

    For me-

Classics- "Citizen Kane", "Gone with the Wind", "Casablanca", "The Maltese Falcon", "Modern Times."

Neo-classics- "Easy Rider", any of "The Godfather" films, "Patton", "The Magnificent Seven."

Modern- "Shawshank", "Dances with Wolves", any of the LOTR films, "Schindler's List."
