I agree. I thought his work was pretty amazing. Dog Day Afternoon and 12 Angry Men are classics. I have his book too, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

One of the greatest actor directors ever. 12 Angry Men, The Hill, The Offence, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon. These are what are called perfect films. RIP.

Sad news, so many classic films, I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Network"

    Certainly an "Actor's" Director.

The TCM tribute for him will probably be the best of the best of the era he directed in. This amazingly even made the nightly news on the non-cable channels. Out of the films I've seen by him Network is my favorite as it showed where tv is now as a warning.

I'm sure I'd've put Network and Prince of the City on my list if I'd seen them. Gotta rectify that. Plus, he was still making movies up till 2007, but I never heard anything about them! No one went to see his penultimate film, the mafia courtroom drama, 'Find Me Guilty'. Cost 10 mil, took 1.5...

One of the reasons he was a great actors' director is that, like so many fine actors' directors, he started as a theatre director. If Hollywood ever decides to recover the standard of dramatic excellence achieved by the likes of Lumet, one thing it might try is to re-connect with theatre, seems to me.

Network in 1973 predicted the rise of "Reality TV". I'm waiting for a person to be actually killed instead of voted off, for having bad ratings.

Glenn Beck has gone on record comparing himself to Howard Beale.

The other amazing flick no one mentions is "the verdict"

Well, if Glenn Beck were Howard Beale, he'd now be dead. I liked him on CNN, and when he started at Fox, but I understand why his ratings tanked. Talk about out inthe cornfield with Sammy Hagar...
