RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman

I've really been getting angry with how moralistic and finger wagging people have been about this. As a mentally ill person, I can say that there are times when you will do ANYTHING to get relief. You may as well judge a starving man for eating, or tell a drowning person not to gasp for air. The need for relief is no more optional than the need to breathe. Lucky ones get professional help and respond well to it. Unlucky ones become addicts. Really unlucky ones need relief so badly they kill themselves. People who have never experienced mental illness should never, ever offer their opinion, because they have no idea what the hell they're talking about. Zero. And if you tell a mentally ill person to snap out of it as if it's just a bad day, punch yourself in the crotch, because you're ignorant. You might as well tell someone with AIDS to stop whining and THINK their immune system back into shape. God it's infuriating how petty, trite, and smarmy the blissfully ignorant are about mental illness and addiction. If you can't muster up an ounce of compassion for a person in absolute, terrifying despair, YOU are the bad person, not the addict.

Well said. I used to have no sympathy for people who died of an overdose or suicide but after suffering from anxiety attacks and depression I came to realize that we do not have as much control over ourselves as we think. We cannot will our bodies to become chemically balanced or overcome certain diseases.

What was happening in Hoffman's life was something he alone was suffering through and unless you lived his life you cannot judge the man. He was aware he had a problem and did seek help but his own mind killed him in the end.

50 bags is not what is found with a relapse 50 bags is not what is found with a general user 50 bags wasn`t even found in Cobain and Loves home the day he took his own life. 50 bags is looking to die. 50 bags of laced Heroine that is blamed on the death of several other users is dumb luck.

R.I.P To his talent feel sad for the family but this p.o.s got exactly what he was looking for...

"We cannot will our bodies to become chemically balanced or overcome certain diseases." your right however go look at his take from Capote then come back and tell me Heroin was his one and only option for "Relief" of a "chemical imbalance" this is an Addict he was an addict years ago he was an addict for a while to work up to a 50 bag bender. sorry guys Mental illness doesn`t hold weight here. Mental illness happens Addiction you do to yourself. I feel sorry for someone who acts out due to a disorder I feel nothing for someone who made a conscious decision to stick a needle into their arm.

The first time yes. Addiction comes after the willful choice to do it the first time. If someone becomes addicted to prescription drugs administered by a doctor I can be sympathetic, but not for cases like this.

I could not agree more.

I wonder how many of the holier than thou bunch smoke pot, take a couple shots(or more) of Jack Daniels every night or any of a number of LEGAL substances while they are pointing fingers at others.

From what I have watched about this case on tv last night, he was also found with several "detox" drugs. My personal opinion is he bought all the heroin (50 bags and many syringes) and also the detox stuff. He was wanting to have one last huge binge and then try to detox himself off of it. Sad situation all around. Obviously it did not work.

Science tells us that addiction is a brain disease.

Addiction has been shown to be 50% genetics and 50% poor coping skills. Abusing drugs/alcohol permanently "rewires" your brain; if you start out with a low predisposition towards abuse, using creates an urge to use grows stronger.

It is considered a disease - just like heart disease or diabetes, it is again genetics and poor lifestyle choices (ie, coping skills). Both are preventable, but both have genetic predispositions to happen.

Now can we get back on topic and talk about PSH? I wonder if they'll recast his role in the Hunger Games or will we see a rewrite?

I just don't accept that as actual "science" but as a marketing ploy for pharmaceuticals (and you know, I usually side WITH big business), shrinks, and an easy out for people so they can claim they aren't responsible for their own actions.

I have no doubt that some people have greater difficulty than others when it comes to saying "no." I am sure that some people can become addicted to whatever more easily than others. Guess what? Life isn't fair. We aren't all given the exact same tools. However, we all have to work with what we are given and make the very best of it.

To me, calling this a disease is a slap in the face to anyone with cancer or heart disease as well as recovering alcoholics and junkies. A cancer patient can wish all day long not to have cancer and the effect is nothing. A junkie CHOOSES to stick the needle in. If it weren't a choice, there would be no recovering alchoholics or junkies because they would have a disease and couldn't will it away, yet those recovering from their addictions choose over and over again, not to indulge their addiction. That is something a person with a REAL disease can't do. They truly don't have a choice.

Poor guy. I only remember him from Red Dragon, and he was fantastic in it.

A great actor who fell victim to a powerful addiction.

:thumbsup well stated!

Or simply run to the doctor for this pill or that pill, basking in the comfort that the drugs they're swilling are legal--just as heroin, cocaine, mdma, and lsd were once legally prescribed--and therefore socially acceptable. The legal/illegal drug line gets really blurry when you see what pills some people take and why. There are a lot of sanctimonious people in glass houses.

I tend to agree in some ways, EXCEPT that mental illness IS just as valid a disease as heart disease (which is the result of poor decision making just as addiction might be, but nobody dances on grampa's grave when his fat ass keels over from eating pork rinds). And the mental illness leads to the addiction. Addiction does not happen in a vacuum.

Wait now... the goal line shifted. Mental Illness (for how little we understand it) is clearly some type of disease. Addiction? Ehhhh, well, I already said how I feel about that being called a disease as I don't necessarily feel that addiction is a "menatal illness." Looking at the scenario you posted (heart disease from eating bad food), if you stuff yourself with bad food, you are responsible for your health. No different than if you choose to smoke and then get lung cancer. YOU are responsible. Now, I don't know about any dancing on graves, I am certainly not dancing on Hoffman's. He was a great actor and what he brings to the silver screen will be missed. However, he is 100% responsible for his own death, just as grampa is in your scenario.

My mom and I are honestly amazed i never had an interest in trying any as i have an addictive type personality. I'm addicted to caffeine and sugar but never once was interested in drugs. I had a 400.00 a month comic book habit though. I just find it sad that nobody he knew was keeping an eye on him to make sure he was okay. I mean they're claiming 65 bags of heroin in his place, that's a lot of heroin.
