Jun 2, 2012 - RIP Matthew Yuricich, Matte Painting legend #1

Matthew Yuricich, the extraordinary matte artist whose sci-fi work ranged from Forbidden Planet to the Planet of the Apes series, through Logan's Run, ST:TMP, Blade Runner and Ghostbusters passed away on May 28th, 2012.

There's a really good blog post about his lengthy career with tons of images at a blog Called Matte Shot (link).

Here's John Eaves blog post about him.

Very sad news The man was a legend, it's hard to find a film that he wasn't involved with in some way.

What's amazing is how much of the stuff I never even realized we're matt paintings. A testament to his skill.

Goes to show what little I know of ye olde visual fx. This man's work is incredible! I never realised that someone could paint something so realistic. That is just amazing. Genuinely lost for words...

It's a testament to his work that you didn't realize you were seeing an effect. So many of the old school effects guys used to say that if someone told them that they enjoyed their work it was a disappointment, because we weren't meant to notice it. If we did, it was a failure.

I remember reading about Matt's work in Starlog back when they had a regular series on visual effects. Many of the paintings he did were made to be combined with anamorphic plates, so he painted the scene squeezed to match. Others were combined with plates on interpositive stock, and had to be painted in weird colors to appear correct in the final print. I can't imagine keeping it all straight, an amazing talent.
