Jul 23, 2010 - Predictions for the new Avengers movie #1

So, as we all know, Joss Whedon is directing.

And, as many of us know, Joss Whedon has a certain....style. He takes a particular approach to storytelling. Accordingly, here is my first prediction about the film.

    Hawkeye will die.

Why? Simple. He'll be one of the most likeable characters, played by a likeable actor (Jeremy Renner).

Ergo, in a Joss Whedon production, HE MUST DIE. Because that's how Joss rolls. I envision it going down something like this:
He and Cap will be strolling around the Avenger's mansion, talking about this or that, when ZZZZZZAAAP! he's fried by a stray power cable. No final words, no meaningful speech, no heroic sacrifice. Just random **** luck. Oh, and it'll happen right after he's found out that Mockingbird thinks he's cute, and he thinks there might be real potential to the relationship. In fact, it may happen right as he's in the middle of saying the word "Relationship."

I predict you will write an endless boring diatribe about how you hate the film and ridicule those who like it.

And I predict you will write a snarky, obnoxious one-line post in that same thread.

So, now that we've covered the obvious, care to contribute something useful?

Yeah, Whedon likes to make his characters miserable and right at the cusp of obtaining happiness, bam!... they go down with their blood spattering on whoever they were about to be happy with. You'd think he wouldn't want it to become a cliche yet he's made it one by repeating it.

Precisely my point. I love his work, in spite of the predictability of it, but it really IS predictable. I'm curious to see how he handles The Avengers, especially with the studio looking over his shoulder. I figure with the exception of the first seasons of Buffy and Firefly, it will be the least "Joss" a product has ever been. Plus, I'm not sure if he's writing it, too. If he isn't, then it'll definitely be a departure for him.

Though I'm sure Marvel and the studio will try to stop him from killing off any of their comic characters. There's a potential movie franchise in each and every one of them, at least in Marvel's point of view. Look at *shudder* Elektra.

Nah I think its backwards, if someone dies it'll be Mockingbird just for continuity sake. Marvel will provide have an override to stop him from killing the "main" members.

I am really dreading what is going to go on with the movie. I haven't liked anything he's directed and have not been that impressed with what I've seen him write. My hopes for the film just plummeted when I heard the news, but I am going to try and reserve judgement until I actually see it-he could surprise me.

If Whedon casts Renner as Hawkeye and kills him, I predict it'll be more because Renner sucked so bad on that one episode of Angel than it'd be Hawkeye actually getting Jossed.

He didn't suck. His part was barely a part in that episode. He's a capable actor, but even good actors will suffer with a crap part.

Respectfully, I disagree. I realize I'm judging the guy by one episode of a 45 minute TV show from almost a decade ago, but that part could have been interesting if they got somebody who could play it. Part of it was the lines they gave him (I don't remember the episode That well) but from what I remember I just hated every part of his character so much that I actually remembered him when Hurt Locker came out and I saw it was him, I wrote it off immediately and completely. Alexa Davalos got some irritating stuff to do on Angel too but I'll still watch whatever she shows up in, because she is capable of taking dialogue that might have some rough points and giving a performance that still comes off as honest and believable.

Well, I thought she was quite good on Angel. I thought Renner's part wasn't bad, just...kinda pointless. And they tried to shoehorn the character in, especially when they'd ALREADY tried doing that in an earlier episode with the dude who was madly in love with his female vampire companion, and figured life wasn't worth living after she was staked. Like, didn't Angel ALREADY have an apprentice? Why are we showing another one who's sort of reminiscent of Angel's killing style and oh hell I just don't even care anymore.

But I didn't blame that on Renner himself. More like just a dull, retread part that was clearly never meant to be developed. I don't even recall him having much dialogue. Just sort of walking around looking...uh...bland and wearing glasses (side note: vampires wearing glasses? WTF?). I expect he's also improved his craft in the last, oh, ten years.

See I liked that episode with Angel thinking he might have been the one committing the murders and all that, up until JR came in. Didn't mind the multiple apprentices thing cuz eventually, over that kinda timeline, yer first one's gonna leave at some point. As are the second, third, and fourth ones.

At the end of the day I wouldn't be able to argue this whole thing logically without watching the episode again, it's been too long since I've seen it. I'll just say one thing and be done with it: I saw him on the one episode that I probably did not watch multiple times, and yet a year or 2 (maybe longer, I forget when I got the Angel box set) later, I still remembered him specifically being Really bad (or I guess we're gonna have to start calling it 'not to my tastes' at this point). My nerdity is vengeful. You mess up an episode of my show and yer written off forever. :P

Not saying Alexa Davalos was annoying on Angel. I liked her too, but she had a few spots where if it weren't for her performance this would not be the case.

Why do I have a feeling that this movie won't happen, but that we'll get a lot of other cool movies that are supposed to lead up to it? I just don't see this getting off the ground. It's just a feeling I have but I hope I'm wrong. :-/

I really hope we don't end up with a bunch of Buffy-speak in the film if it is made though.

So who has Joss killed? Wash? The actor wanted to be done with the character. Buffy? Yeah she came back. Cordelia? Wasn't she pregnant and probably wanted to leave. Book? It did suck that he died. Who am I missing?

Tara. I never watched a lot of Buffy but from what I remember, that's how the whole "Jossed" thing got started. Also, Fred on "Angel" was pretty f'ed up. They do it in Dr. Horrible also, at the end w/ Felicia Day's character.

EDIT: Kitty Pryde in his Astonishing X-Men run could also be included, even though they're bringing her back now.

I'm looking forward to an Avengers movie too, and at the risk of sounding pessimistic, you can't help but wonder if it'll get off the ground. I loved Firefly, but it'll be interesting to see how his approach translates to the superhero genre. Trying to be optimistic.

Tara could have died two seasons earlier IMO. Somehow Whedon never got around to having her do or be anything useful or interesting.

What happened to Fred was epically ghastly though. Props for that! It's not just literal deaths or deaths of a personality though; he kills off (and reanimates) character's goodness or likeability too. I kind of enjoy it, he's damned good at making you care about his characters then doing unbearably horrible things to them. It's masochistic perhaps but I do find it entertaining in a way that actual torture porn like Saw et al would never be.

Aaaaaaaand we have confirmation: Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye. I'm not loving either of those choices but I might have to make myself see Hurt Locker just to see how this guy's grown as an actor. Mark Ruffalo just seems more like a laid-back guy who is somewhat capable of handling himself, which to me is the wrong way to go. I liked him in Eternal Sunshine, I just don't see him as Banner. I'll give him a shot, though. I mean at this point, what else am I gonna do? Not see the movie? Yeah, Riiiiiiiiiiight...

i'm not sure if even whedon could top the brutal murder of hawkeye's wife and kids from the ultimates comics. that was shocking and hard to read. i really hope this movie is as gritty and raw as the ultimates was. it's rare for me to enjoy a retelling of classic characters but i loved those comics.

i predict this movie will happen and it will be good. (please be good)
    (please?)
