    Jan 25, 2011 - Oscar 2011 Nominations #1

    CHUD.com — Oscar Nominations, 2011

Rooting for David Fincher, but Chris Nolan deserved to be nominated for Best Director, glad he got the nominated for Original Screenplay.

Also rooting for James Franco, Christian Bale and Natalie Portman.

Hoping for Trent Reznor for Best Original Score, though Hans Zimmer would be most deserving as well.

Lot of people consider The Social Network to be overrated, I don't and I hope it gets the award for Best Picture.

Too bad Scott Pilgrim didn't make the final round for Best Visual Effects, but it should have at least been nominated for Best Editing. It is still my #1 favourite film of 2010.

Being as it's been said by Zuckerberg and others that "The Social Network" is not as closely accurate as they say happened and made for a more interesting movie than truthful, I'm surprised it's been given such high acclaim. I thought it was a great movie, but not best picture.

Apparently there was another book written about Mark Zuckerberg that was closely accurate. He said they chose the fictitious version of his story instead.

I also agree with CHUD about the score. The Daft Punk score ROCKED, hahaha! I didn't think it'd get nominated though.

I have cared less about the Oscars over the years. I have my favorite movies of the years and that's all that matters to me.

Also, Christopher Nolan gets the shaft again. Nice going, Academy!

Wait, what? Scott Pilgrim could not even hold a candle to the films nominated in that category. Not saying your opinion is wrong, just saying I do not understand it.

I haven't seen the films nominated for Best Editing yet but I'll catch'em when they hit NetFlix. But I will defend Scott Pilgrim. It really was very nicely edited. Thankfully, being nominated or not doesn't negate good work even if it goes unappreciated.

Oh, snap: no art direction or special effects nominations for TRON.

I just meant Scott Pilgrim is MY #1 favourite movie of the year. I didn't mean it deserved to be nominated for Best Picture. But it surely deserved to be nominated for Best Editing. And yes even nominated for Visual Effects, after all it did make the final 10 cut, before getting eliminated in the final 5 list.

I am not really sure what is the criteria for Best Visual Effects, but it certainly does not require a definite number of visual effects shots to be nominated. There are lot of VFX driven movies, but what is more important is how well they are blended into the live action scenes.

CGI characters or visual effect shots in a CGI environment is complex yet more easier then blending visual effect shots in a pure live action shot, which is what Scott Pilgrim had in many shots. Some of the scenes had VFX shots seamlessly blended in, sometimes it is hard to even notice them.

I had quite a time considering which movie I liked more than the other to be considered for my top 2010 list, but the one I had no problem deciding was which is the #1 2010 movie for me.

Thanks to the DVD I have seen Scott Pilgrim vs. the World so many times now, that I skip to any part of the movie and just enjoy the subtlety and brilliance of its humour from time to time. The whole movie has such immense repeat value for me, it continues to make me laugh and marvel at its visuals.

    Yep.

And if it wasn't for the HORRIBLE CGI faces the rest of the FX in the movie were amazingly fluid and felt physically "there". I would think the FX should get a nod before IM2. Talk about not wowing me like the 1st one...

I remember thinking Wall Street was overrated when it first came out, but it has since gone on to symbolize an era. What Wall Street is to the 80's The Social Network is to the 2000's.

Sure, The Social Network has its share of flaws, but it also paints a vivid and compelling portrait of a time and place, and for that reason it deserves to be taken seriously.

The problem with the whole "What should be Best Picture?" question is that it's the wrong question. No picture can reasonably claim to be the "best" of any given year. All too often those bestowed the dubious honor of a Best Picture Oscar quickly become cinematic footnotes whereas the "losers" (pick any Hitchcock, Kubrick, or Disney film) withstand the test of time.

Look at it this way... The Social Network may not be the Best Picture of 2010, but it's at least as good as Braveheart.

Say whatever hyperbolic phrase you want about the effects used to create CLU, there are sequences in the movie that are the closest we've gotten to a believable CG human.

I'm not saying every scene was 100%, but I think this story is important to tell NOW, even if the technology needed to tell it isn't quite there. It's close enough for me.

It just occurred to me in reading your post... if I ever got a replica oscar statue (which I won't do because we all know how seriously the Academy guards their IP), the inscription would have to "Rocketeer, Best Picture, 1991". But the Oscar figure would have to have a fin and rocketpack added to it to make it complete.

I hope "The King's Speech" does really well.

It was refreshing in this culture of "CGI, 3D, VFX" minded film makers to find a film that was well written, well acted, and engaging from start to finish despite being primarily two people talking to one another. No frills good storytelling.

i really want to see the king's speech..i heard it was a wonderful film..i think this upcoming oscar winners is some-what predictable.....

best picture might be a close one: i say it is between king's speech and social network..i think king's speech may have the edge..look for the wild card from the kids are all right though..

    Best Male actor: Colin Firth

    Best Actress: Natalie Portman

Best supporting actor: Might be a close one between Christian Bale and Geoffrey Rush....Christian Bale maybe the favorite and getting most of the publicity, but the oscars may vote for rush since he is a veteran actor....

Best Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo might win, hailee steinfield might be a close second

Best Feature animated film: toy story 3

Frankly, the best movie that I saw last year was Let Me In. I understand that it's not really an Oscar type movie, but it'd be nice to see some sort of praise for the film... and, yeah I dug Let The Right One In, too - I just think the American version is a little tighter. (And I'm by no means a horror/vampire fan at all).

After that - I really enjoyed Black Swan and True Grit and both were worthy of a Best Picture nods. True Grit kind of surprised me as it tends to be a little too straight forward for the Academy.

Of the rest of the nom's for Best Picture that I've seen... well, I think Inception was pretty much garbage, it's just muddy and has the typical Nolan look and feel and little emotion at all. Sorry, but you've seen one Nolan flick and you've seen them all, at least look wise - I dislike his style and approach. I can only hope the screenplay reads better than the movie I saw to warrant a nod. And The story had more holes in than swiss cheese.

Social Network is kind of a funny duck for me. I saw the movie and... and well, I thought it was a very solid movie. I just left it feeling kind of empty inside. I saw good, solid performances - but, I'm guessing you weren't supposed to like anyone in the film. I saw this movie and I felt ambivalent about it. I didn't care about the people involved or what happened to them... well, maybe I disliked Mark Zuckerberg even more.

I hope to see 127 Hours and The King's Speech before the Oscars air. But as it sits, my pick of the nominations is Black Swan.
