I imagine it's having your cake and eating it, too. You get a (possibly) beloved former character to play with, with all bets off as to action and consequence. Honestly, I sort of think it's brilliant from a marketing and story-telling standpoint, Ultimizing Star Trek like that.

Oh why can't Abrams be honest about it and just use Darth Vader.

Well they had star trek mixed up with the xmen franchise in the comics so why not star wars lol. That last pic of the enterprise running away is so going to be a desktop on my pc at some point.

Yeah, in Space Seed he only tried to kill Kirk (and thought he succeeded) and then tried to destroy the Enterprise when his attempt to steal her failed.

And despite all that, Kirk still didn't want to condemn Khan and his people to a life of imprisonment. That was a decision he came to on his own without consulting his officers or Khan. Quite a step up from shooting a helpless ship that's already being consumed by a black hole.
