    May 30, 2012 - "Moon" - Just for scifi fans? #1

There are a couple of threads discussing Moon, but they all have spoilers. I want to watch this with as little information as I can. Seems like suspense is a big part of this film.
It finally came up on my netflix list and arrived today.
Should I watch this by myself? My family is not the extreme scifi family.

I'd watch it alone first if I were you. It can be a bit confusing the first time you watch it, it's one of those films you have to watch at least twice to catch everything. It definitely has a strong sci-fi feel to it, but that doesn't mean only sci-fi fans will enjoy it. Personally, I love it. My girlfriend, who is a big sci-fi fan, absolutely hates it (for some reason). My sister, who isn't at all into sci-fi, loves it.

So yeah, I'd watch it with your family, but I'd watch it alone first. Damn good movie.

Though it might appeal more to sci-fi fans, the movie is certainly not meant just for them. Still I would say watch it alone, then if you dig it watch it again with the family.

This is not sci fi as much as it is a "cerebral sci fi".

If anyone watching "MOON" is waiting for a cool action scene or anything remotely fast paced, then they will hate this movie.

I personally liked it but I wouldn't consider it Sci Fi at all.

I absolutely love this movie. I'm a big fan of psychological movies where you're not quite sure what's real and what's not, though. I really enjoyed Black Swan as well, though my husband didn't... though, it could be because he wasn't paying full attention to the movie and felt like he only happened to return his attention in time for the 'creepy stuff'.

It's not just for Sci Fi fans, Rockwell's performance given the unique challenges
of the story is impressive. Also the fact that this quality film was made with a fraction of the cost of big studio Sci Fi films that fail to deliver is also impressive.

I wouldn't watch it at all unless it was completely free. I expected to be blown away after hearing people gushing about it, but it was like one of the lackluster Outer Limits episodes.

Lackluster?! To each their own I suppose. Loved it. You don't have to be into science fiction to enjoy this film at all.

    Very good film, contemplative.
For sure not for the kiddies. Mature audience only, in more than age as well.

It's big-idea sci fi in the tradition of "Gattaca" and "Blade Runner."

Which is to say, old-skool SF.

Definitions have changed, nowadays people hear Sci Fi and they think explosions and escapes and stuff.

But yes, I'd recommend "Moon" for anybody who thinks they might like it.

Couple years ago, around the time of District 9 I think. which is another good 'un.

See those and also Sunshine. All solid SF!

A very interesting, thinking-person's SF film, though I don't think you particularly need to be an SF fan so enjoy it. Highly recommeded.

I'd say that describes Moon fairly well. Realistically, the only things that make it a sci-fi movie (in the traditional definition of sci-fi, that is) are the location and the fact that it's set in Earth's not-too-distant future. It could just as easily have taken place in a remote setting on Earth rather than on the moon, and it wouldn't have been much different.

As for the question of whether or not it should be watched by someone who isn't into science fiction movies, that depends on their definition of what constitutes science fiction. If they're going to be put off by the simple fact that it takes place on a moon base, it's probably not for them. If they like a well-told mystery story regardless of the era or setting, they might like it.

I love Moon; it became one of my favorite movies on the first viewing. But given it's rather leisurely pace at times, I can understand why some might not like it. If you're looking for an action-oriented shoot-'em-up, this isn't the movie for you. But if you like a good psychological thriller/mystery, this is one of the better ones.

Definitely not what I would consider a "family" movie in that the pace is relatively show, there is little to no action and unless you really dig this genre, you will probably find it boring.

With that said, I LOVED this movie and thought it was amazing. Definitely think it is worth watching, but I don't know that I would bring in the fam with popcorn as they are likely to be disappointed.

I love this movie as well. Yeah it's not Star Wars or Star Trek, it's a thinking persons movie, I would say more along the lines of 2001. You have to pay attention to what is going on and what is said. If you watch movies where other people in the room like to talk during a film, you will miss stuff. Highly recomemnded if you have an open mind.

I saw the movie because my sister, who is not usually into Sci-Fi at all, had seen it first and recommended it to me.
It did, however, like others have written, feel a bit like a stretched episode of Outer Limits, but it is definitely worth watching.
