    Jun 13, 2012 - Monster movie suggestions #1

I'm looking for suggestions for obscure but good monster movies. I'm trying to put together a play list for a movie night and two of my guests are extremely well-versed in horror movies (one runs a successful review site). Imports, forgotten gems, anything you've come across that they may not have seen but is good, surprising and/or entertaining. All recommendations gratefully received!

    Nekromantik (1987) - IMDb

and there is even a sequel

Well, if it doesn't have to be monsters, I'd suggest some of the recent French horror flicks; Inside, Martyrs or Frontiers were all good. An interesting Norwegian one is "Rare Exports".
As for monsters, "Dog Soldiers" was a good Brit werewolf movie. "Dead Snow", "Outback" and "Deathwatch" are Nazi zombie movies. Or look up some older movies (Hammer, AIP) that they may have missed, depending on how old they are.

Good call - unfortunately, one of my guests has a framed poster for that on his living room wall. See what I'm up against?!

All great movies suggested so far, thank you. But I need something really obscure. The theme is monsters, so I would like to try fit in that genre somehow.

Ok, a hokey movie that hasnt stood up to time, but it has Peter cushing in it and the premise is creepy as hell

    Shock Waves
    Shock Waves (1977) - IMDb

Would love to see it re-done.

Like I said, some of it is hokey, but there are scenes and imagery in this that still freak me out. Worth watching if you want to have a fun night picking it apart

so exactly what was the point of this post in a thread all about wanting MONSTER flicks? just trying to show off that you've seen some rubbish german "shocker"?

edit : not that they're rare or obscure but i'd plump for
    Deep Rising
    Leviathan
    DeepStar 6
The Ghost and The Darkness (man-eating lions can be monsters!)
    The Blob (remake)
    Brotherhood of the Wolf
    Cast a Deadly Spell
    Night of the Creeps
    Demon Knight
    Society

Wow you criticize and insult me and miss the fact that the OP stated that he wanted obscure and yes monster movies and went on to further express that one of the people coming has a poster of what you consider to be "German rubbish"

Hey, hey, lets not be jerks...

Although I wouldn't consider Nekromantik a monster flick! More of a love story...

Actually, they need to see Roger Cormans Forbidden Planet!

Forbidden World, surely - very different movie!

Looking like some very interesting suggestions. Very glad I posted this question. Whatever we end up viewing on Monster Movie night, I'm going to end up with enough cool recommendations to keep me busy for a year!

I really love horror movies, from the early German films, like DER GOLEM(1920), to the classic Universal films, like THE WOLFMAN (1941), to Hammer Horror films, like CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (1961), to modern horror films, like LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008). I also like the cheesy ones, like IT'S ALIVE (1974) and PROPHECY (1979). I would recommend the following 3:

    1. NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE (1979). A remake of the 1922 classic, which represents a transition from one talented German director to another one. This film, directed by Werner Herzog, stars Klaus Kinski as the monster--an actor that did not really need makeup to appear creepy and malevolent.

    2. PHANTASM (1979). Strange, fun and scary; I don't know of a single person that was not, at least a little, caught off guard by some of the startling images.

    3. RE-ANIMATOR (1985). I love this movie. It combines the disturbing, with the gross and the hilarious. Is the color green the image of hope that Gatsby sees across the bay at the end of a dock? Not in this movie! This movie combines the Hammer Horror's sensibility of having an extremely sexy woman, with George Romero's detailed grossness and the clever slapstick of an early Woody Allen film. And I'm not kidding; however, be warned, it is dark--very dark--comedy.

    Barry.

Bad Taste - British alien horror.

Edit: Peter Jackson directed it. I guess it's not that obscure.

If only I still had my old copies of Fangoria

    Nosferatu - the first vampire
It has a soundtrack from Type O Negative and hosted by David Caradine.

    Devils Trade (2007) on Fearnet.com
It's broken up into parts, but you could record it edit it together?

War of the Dead (Z.E.R.O.) Only had two episodes online before it died.

I really don't know, good and obscure is a tough one.

    Dr. Giggles?
    Brainscan?
    Subspecies?
    Jack Frost?

As said before, depends how old he is.

no, he said "obscure but good monster movies" not "obscure AND monster movies". seems you're the one who missed facts. And yes, Nekromantik is by a German, and it's rubbish. my opinion. (not the being German bit, that's a fact).

i haven't got a stick, i'm just sick of seeing threads on umpteen BBs where someone asks a clear specific question and people post complete wastes of time that do not address what is being raised.
it's like someone going "hey, anyone got any good Star Destroyer reference pics?" and someone replying "well here's an awesome pic of the Enterprise!". pointless and a waste.

guy quite clearly asked for monster movies. if you can logically reason to me why he might happily show his friends a zero-budget German film about "corpse-fkng art", i'm willing to listen.
