whoops, saw that Art already posted a gallery.

I really like the big shield on the chest and the chain mail type texture all over.

And the cape is amazing. Can't wait to see the trailer. Supposedly it's supposed to be attached to the new Batman movie.

    the new costume is epic!

Just look at it, its astounding.

Given that WB wanted to move away from all previous incarnations, I think they have done a superb job with this costume. Its infinitely superior to the Superman Returns costume.

The Superman Returns costume was Blue and Maroon, it had a really pathetic looking cape attachment, too small of a shield and just felt very flat.

This new costume however is a massive improvement. The colours are actually blue and red, the boots are comic book accurate, the cape attachment, shield are comic book accurate.

The only things missing are the trunks/belt, and to replace them, they've added some neat lines which form a sort of belt.

Despite the lack of trunks, they are almost 99% accurate, nothing to complain about.

Sure, keeping some red on the trunk area would have made it perfect, but as it stands, I think it works great.

Would have liked an S shield on the cape, but thats not much of an issue.

Now just need to see the trailer!

    i fixed the shield

with the wider S, without any breakup, it looks kinda bland
still, imo better than the textured S

I wonder what the Jor-El costume was made out of? Looks like it could be a PITA to wear!

Thanks for the great pictures Art.

I think all the new stuff looks great!

For those crapping on the new costume... are you SURE you aren't just remembering the Reeves costume with just a little more nostalgia attached to it than a critical eye to what looks cool?

I REALLY don't like how muted and dark those colors are.

Superman isn't a dark character. I really don't like the new outfit.

I have no idea what anyone sees in this new costume.

It's not a Superman costume. It's a Bizzaro costume, the only thing it's missing is the backwards S emblem.

Superman is not dark and scaly - he's a bright, shiny beacon of hope.

The cape does look wonderful, but the new costume just makes my stomach turn.

For me, the new costume makes Superman look more like what I think of him as, an alien! The old costume looks just like, well, a costume!

I agree that compared to the old costume, the new is dark, but by itself, I don't think it is too dark or menacing.

One thing that I really like about the new costume that I don't think we see in the old is that Superman looks powerful and I really think that is important. The comics have almost always gotten this right, but ALL of the movies have fallen down in this area. This is the first time Superman looks like he might be the strongest man in the world.

I understand the power of nostalgia, but when I look at the Reeves costume compared to the Man of Steel costume, the Reeves costume is painfully cheesy and outdated. Did they need to go with the full on chainmail look? No, but to me, the Man of Steel costume is one I can get behind a whole lot more than I can the Reeves costume.

Oh, and the cape IS indeed amazing on the new costume!

Doesn't look too alien to me, just looks like it's following the basic Superhero-movie trend costume wise to me. Dark and textured. Plus, no matter what you do to the costume, it's still a humanoid wearing it.

I'll agree - none of the other movie/TV costumes really catpured the powerful-ness of Superman... I'm no fan of the Reeve costume/era and that just never did anything for me, even as a kid.

This new costume - in the official photo I've seen has captured some of the "epic-ness" of Superman. I've found the candid/spy shots of Cavill in costume to be pretty bad... just doesn't do much for me.

the thing is, there can be so much difference to the shots we got to the actual movie due to lighting and color correction, you cant really judge just on the pics alone

Sure I can. I'm basing my opinion on the overall design - dark, scaly, no shorts, wacky S design = not a Superman to me.

Nope. The Reeve costume was a near-perfect reproduction of the classic costume, in pretty much EVERY detail. It's still the perfect Superman movie costume.

I really don't care for this new costume, it's too busy with the textures all over the base costume and on the S. It might not be so bad if they toned down the texture a bit so that it wasn't so obvious except during close ups and/or under certain lighting and they made the whole S shield smooth.

I really don't understand this current trend of heavily textured costumes, sometimes smooth or only lightly textured is a good thing. Why does everything have to crazy textures or micro patterns printed on them like with the new Trek uniforms?

Couldn't agree more! I like the new suit and it doesn't look like anything created here on earth to me. And losing the man panties is my favorite part.

    fixed that for ya.

Honestly - what would WE know about alien clothing? It shouldn't look like ours. (in THIS era)

I can't argue that the Reeve costume is indeed a near-perfect reproduction of the classic look. But the question is, should that be the look for all time?

I get the need for the underwear over your tights look back in a more modest era, but to me, the undies-on-top look is very dated and almost silly at this point for a Superman set in our time. Do "no undies" break the classic look? Of course, but how can you guys still think that looks good for this character?

This again comes back to my question about nostalgia. Are you just wanting more of the same because you are familiar and comfortable with it, or do you truly feel the manties are a better look?

To me, the red undies, along with the classic suit, is a better look. However, as long as the story has a Superman true to his character, I think I can overlook the new design. And, as long as Ma Kent makes it for him, then cool.

One big problem for me is how they keep making the "S" an Kryptonian thing. What's wrong with it standing for "Superman"? I mean, Siegel and Shuster had it that way, and Byrne reiterated it in his Man of Steel run.

The "red undies" look has been around for 73 years. So yeah, it's not a "modern look" but, Superman is not a modern character.

It's also not a "natural" look - unless you're a wrestler, the undies over pants isn't something I wear around a lot. ...and even the wrestler bit is more about tights than undies over pants.

So why "red undies" over blue pants can't be considered an alien look is beyond me.

Change for change sake isn't always a good thing.

Superman will always be my favorite comic book character. I love the Byrne era - I think it refocused the character in a very good way. And Superman really needed someone to come in and run that franchise - because everyone and anyone had a take on Superman and everyone approached it differently.

I don't think the Donner/Reeve movies did him justice. Yes, it was very cool to see Superman really fly and that kind of stuff - but, the Clark Kent stuff was just poorly done (again, my opinion). I always thought the 50's George Reeves TV show got it right.

I don't like the changes they've made to Superman that we've seen so far. Superman wears his bright costume proudly. Why bright garish colors and the old Superman S can't be just as alien as the current dark, textured trend is beyone me.

Lmao!, please no more manties on superheros.

I dig the new suit, looks more modern, alien-ish, and out of this world. Superhero's got to change their style with the times just like regular people to.

Does the fact that he isn't a modern character that he is forever doomed to wear a costume created for another era? I understand if people don't like the new design, but for those that feel that the red manties are the ONLY acceptable look for Superman are stuck in the past and not acknowledging that his costume design was a result of when he was created and if he had been created today, he wouldn't look the same way.
