Discussion about this at Woot... because well, this sounds too good to be true.

Box art appears to be of the extended edition. Heard some bad reviews about the video transfer for FOTR, still on the fence about buying this set since last year.

I'm not seeing any art on the Walmart site.

$12 shipped - plus you get the Hobbit ticket. Even with a not so good vide transfer, it's probably worth it.

I've got the Extended Version on Blu Ray - still picked this up.

Yeah, I was only going by the box art shown on Woot. Judging by the comments indeed appears to be only theatrical cut.

Yes definitely, I am considering it now. Though I was planning to buy only the Extended Edition.

Someone probably really messed up with the price listing, I wonder if they will cancel the orders later on or will still go through with it.

The extended edition of FOTR is a much better transfer. I wouldn't bother with the theatrical editions personally.

Totally agree. There's a greenish hue added to FOTR, which Peter Jackson did deliberately to make the Shire feel more lush i believe.

Don't the extended blu-rays already have the theatrical version on them as a branching option? So, you're basically paying $12....for a $10 movie ticket?

    I've heard otherwise.

Yeah, this is what I heard -- except it's not just limited to the Shire. It's EVERYWHERE. Apparently it's blatantly obvious when you watch the recapped scenes from FOTR in TTT or ROTK. For example, the balrog scene is apparently different from one movie to the other.

There's been some suggestion that this is intentional, but....I don't buy it. Either they screwed up with FOTR and are too cheap to fix it until they do some other release, or they screwed up with the later films. My bet is on the former, and then tehy came out and said "Yeah, we..uh..meant to do that." Like what happened with the rear music channels on ANH with the 2004 DVDs. "Yeah, we meant to reverse them. that's on purpose." Which was, of course, corrected for the blu-rays.

Do the Extended Editions come with the theatrical release on them? Extended is just WAY too long for me for a set of movies I only "like".

I THINK they do, yeah. Bear in mind that the extendeds are available in two formats: box set, and single releases, but I think it's the same discs in either. Amazon's description says that the extended version includes branching content (spread out on two discs) so that you can watch the movie either in the theatrical version or with the extended scenes.

If they do have them I wasn't aware of it.

In a manner of speaking I may be paying $12 for a $10 ticket, but I will also have the disc's - even if they're duplicating content I already have. I can always use this set as a gift.

Well I'm basing my opinion on personal experience and my opinion is that the extended blu ray edition is excellent, far superior to the theatrical edition release.

The theatrical BR, which I also bought and own, just doesn't look as good. All the 'green talk' is valid up to a point, but to be honest it only enriches the release IMO.

Green, red then blue. That was always the 'colour scheme' for these films.

Huh. I could've sworn I read that somewhere. Maybe it was in one of the reviews. At any rate, I only ever watch the extended versions (which I hardly ever watch anyway on DVD). It'd be nice to have them, though.

Maybe I'll pick up the extended box set soon. But anyway, JD, it looks like you're in the clear.

Perhaps this wasn't a fluke? Walmart now has the LOTR Blu Ray trilogy up for sale for $12 - with probably correct cover art and an MSRP of $24.97.

Chances are you'll be playing a substantial mark up and be waiting a verrrrrry long time.

To me this deal is just to cheap to pass up. I have the expanded editions, I'd like the shorter versions as well... and at this price, it's a no brainer.

Yeah, I mean, unless they re-re-re-re(how many "res" is that now?)-release them on blu-ray in some bundle with a ton of new special features, I can't see a reason NOT to buy this for $12 if you want the theatrical versions. I prefer the extended ones, and have yet to upgrade my DVDs, but if you want the theatrical versions, you could buy these or, I dunno, buy a six-pack of beer. Which will last you longer, ya know?
