Judge Dredd 2012 is gonna rock

I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I've had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them - a little quibble at the beginning - have been addressed. And what a lot they've added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I've not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes. Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done - true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you'll let me know what you think when you've seen it, but this has my recommendation.
There you go if John Wagner gives it the thumbs up, it has to be good ....... right !!

I can't wait to see this movie.

The summer movie season is now in full swing and a trailer for Dredd NEEDS to be put before all those eyeballs!!!

Sounds like a different movie to the one we thought they were filming, then.

YouTube is, as usual, absolutely useless. Only thing on there are crappy "fan" made trailers that CLAIM to be for "Dredd 2012", but which have been made using footage from the old Sylvester Stallone version.... and the footage is of such low quality, it looks as if it was mastered from an old VHS cassette!

If it's got the bikes, vehicles, costumes and sets we've been seeing so far then either still photos distort to the point that still-cameras are 100% useless for recording images, or Wagner has lost his mind. Waiting to see more pre-release material.

And as for the 'unrelenting violence', well it was never a staple of Wagner's own best stories. The violence would be there and it would be strong but never 'unrelenting'. It was always mixed with satire or character drama or social examination of the futuristic absurdities of Mega-City life. Sounds like we're getting not much of the last three, just constant violence - and totally pathetic bikes, unless Wagner forced a re-design of the entire film, or all photos shown so far have been fakes.

Pathetic bikes, too true - sorry, I know some of you guys really want to like them but even 'Priest' had better bikes - and Ford F150 H-wagons. And chainlink wire fences and brick facades. (What is this, Mega-City 1 or Space Precinct?!)

I don't like any of the vehicles either. The bikes make me think of mega force, even though they look nothing alike. The trucks, I'm hoping the trucks are just parked like that in the film in some background shot.

I will give the film a shot despite the vehicles. I have no idea what story they are telling, so I'm curious enough about that to give it a shot. If the trailer gives the story away, I may just wait for cable.

Yeah, no argument. We are judging the film by what, three stills? That's kind of extreme even for me, really.

It was just kind of a shock to see it looking like zero-budget stuff. If this ends up being a film that kicks all kinds of arse but looks low-budget as hell, it'll still be a miss. I mean Alien3 would be considered at least a cult classic if the characters it took in such a nihilistic direction hadn't been so loved. Same thing here; if you put a kickarse Dredd in Johannesburg then there's a distinct chance it's not really going to be Dredd...

Still holding out some hope those stills weren't representative of the finished product. Placeholder bikes for CG to be overlaid onto, that sort of thing.

Hah, neat! Still not entirely sure how I feel about the film yet. I was a bit disappointed in the way the bikes look, and while I do like the costume designs, I still wish they featured the giant shoulders. They just need to release a trailer already!

They are cutting it too close here, unless I can get some glowing reviews, this will be a pass for me.

September, and they don't have a singel trailer? Resident Evil is coming in September, and they even released a trailer already. I am dissapoint!

It was a song the Manic Street Preachers wrote for the Stallone movie. Unfortunately, their lyricist disapeared around the time they were finishing it, and they put it on ice. The song was released a few years ago, and it's awesome.

I know, I know.

Placeholder bikes, vehicles and city for cg are the only hope. But I need that costume to be cg placeholder too.

It doesn't matter if the script and acting are better than Lawrence of Arabia if the bikes, vehicles and sets look like they were knocked together by Bert I Gordon, which they do. A film that purports to bring Dredd to the screen and which opts for chainlink fences and brick facades - and that pitiful bike - instead of the visionary MegaCity 1 of the original comics can be dismissed at production photo stage, in my view.
