Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Post-release)

Looks like Jack Ryan's getting a Craig Bond/Jason Bourne makeover. Not sure what I feel about that, though... That toilet fight scene looks like it was ripped off from Casino Royale.

Looks entertaining. Doesn't look like Jack Ryan. This film is misleadingly branded, and purely for vague name recognition.

Very loosely based on the Jack Ryan in the Tom Clancy Novels. It could be a good movie and I'm sure they are hoping to spin off a bunch of movies based on the character. I still like the Jack Ryan as played by Harrision Ford or the first one by Alec Baldwin. Not sure if I like this version of Jack.

It's not. It's Generic Spy Man. This is PURELY about branding and purely as an attempt to manipulate audiences. It's just Hollywood being craven, which is a shame, because the actual substance looks like it could stand on its own two feet. Call it "Shadow Recruit" and have it be about a new character we've never heard of named....I dunno....Michael Rourke.

But instead, because, you know, Tom Clancy brand name and Jack Ryan brand name, they just slap the name overtop an otherwise generic spy film about some young recruit, and call it "JACK RYAN! MAN OF ACTIONZ!!!"

I wish Hollywood would grow a ****ing pair.

I guessed they sorta learned that with The Bourne Legacy; even if the title corresponded with the established franchise, it just wont be the same if the main character's not recognizable.

The sad thing is there are so many Ryanverse books that they could have adopted instead of making a new more fast paced action-packed storyline just to make the Ryan character more appealing to the ADHD generation.

Looks like they pulled and I Robot and turned a generic story that mighta been good into a turd by throwing a name and a few characters into it.

Some day, we can dream that they'll make a film or miniseries of Without Remorse, or possibly Rainbow Six.

I want them to make a movie of Without Remorse. To me, that was the epitome of Tom Clancy's writing.

As to this new movie...

This. This so damned much.

I'm interested in it, actually. As I said before, the actual substance of the film looks interesting. But I am doing a hard eye-roll at the name, given how little the substance seems to have in common with the established literary Ryanverse. But whatever. It'll probably be enjoyable as a not-necessarily-Jack-Ryan film.

Ugh. Sum of All Fears was bad enough, now he is running around shooting at bad guys? I suppose in the next one he will be doing a lot of martial arts. This is probably what killed Clancy.

It seems like everyone here thinks it looks like it's going to be a bad movie. I just started reading the Ryan novels a few months ago, and I'm becoming a Clancy fan. I'm only on book two and have seen only one of the movies, but I like the series already. For me, I think the movie looks like it will be a good action/thriller film, on its own. As a Jack Ryan movie, it doesn't seem to look like one though.

I'm going to give this a miss unless the reviews are fantastic, since it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the actual books, and looks like it will be missing everything that I liked about the books. I've always hated in-name-only adaptations.

I've always liked the Cardinal of the Kremlin myself. I prefer his earlier books quite a bit over the later ones where I felt thing were getting a bit hard to believe.
