This film was... meh. An ok meh, not a bad meh.

The one thing I was most nervous about was the effects. They held up pretty well all things considering. It does contain a bit much of the "red shirt" syndrome with predictable canon fodder. Don't know why, but that stuff bugs me more than anything. It does gets points for at least acknowledging their deaths.

The actors are all in their A game so if you're there for Ewan McGregor, you'll enjoy it. He definitely outshines Nicholas Hoult.

Now if you'll excuse me, I would like to go into an area I'm sure no one wants to hear about so, fair warning.

Isabelle. Wow. If there was ever a text book example on trying to create a strong female character who could hold her own in the story and FAILING COMPLETELY, this film is it. I mean, it's like they took a story that had a bona fide useless damsel in distress, decided that she must be fierce and independent, but forgot to change the damsel material.

Isabele's character starts out as your typical princess who defies her father because she wants "more" out of her life. She sets out in disguise, meets jack, the beanstalk grows and she gets trapped in Jack's house while it travels into the sky. Now Jack and a handful of the King's men set out to save her and yes, Jack ends up doing all the work. What makes this even more grating is that there's a failed attempt to say she's not useless by having her tell Jack that she's useless while he tells her that if she didn't do what she did, the Giants would have invaded. Yeah, that was more of an unforeseen consequence rather than a deliberate act to stop the Giants. She just wanted to run away where as Jack takes action to save the day.

Even the final fight with the giants when she dawns her golden armor, she doesn't do anything but become the damsel that Jack has to save.

And at the end of the battle when all the giants start kneeling because of the crown, I was begging the film to let Isabelle be the one holding the crown. Let her do SOMETHING on her own initiative. I was like Homer Simpson in the Camp Krusty episode when the news was reporting that kids had taken over the camp and they were going to interview the leader.

"Don't be the boy. Don't be the boy."

And just like Homer, I lost two strands of hair after I saw Jack holding the glowing crown while Isabelle was off to the side behind him. To add insult to injury, he puts the crown on his freaking head!

If you have an interest in seeing this movie because you like giants, it will deliver in that regard. I actually found the tiny double head to be the most enjoyable thing about this movie.

Went and saw this over the weekend, and enjoyed it. Not a fantastic movie or anything, but it's a fun movie, and Ewan McGregor was great.

This is the first I've heard of it. Granted, I don't usually watch live TV, so I don't tend to see current commercials.

Unfortunately i think this production was doomed from the start. 2 of my friends were meant to crew the movie, but it was delayed and delayed with script issues and funding. I heard about this movie about 4 years ago when it was meant to be from the perspective of the giant.

Maybe I'll hold off on this one..

I saw this about a year ago when it was called "Jack the Giant Killer", at an advance movie screening for feedback. It was, as others stated, "meh". Of course, I haven't seen the finish product, but it looked almost near completion when I saw it, sans an original score (I started to laugh at the scene where they are riding away on horseback from the giants, and "Watchful Guardian" from TDK started to play. :D

I just watched this not expecting much. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I found that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the characters and Ewan Macgregor a nice unexpected addition. As usual I would have rather had real actors in make-up playing the giants, but unfortunately it seems that prosthetics is a dead art these days, taken over by our computer overlords. I liked the way the King and his court were not played as sniveling pompous a$$es the way most kings of those times are portrayed. He wasn't done as just a money hungry tyrant and actually was a hero in his own right. Ewan was excellent as always. Yes, the princess' role could have been rounded out a little better but I didn't mind too bad. The story of Jack was filled in really well, I thought. (who was that guy? I know I've seen him in something before.) I'm not really sure why this wasn't just called Jack and the Beanstalk as, in addition to some added components, that's really what it is.

The only thing was that there seemed to be a missing subplot, barely touched on, and that was the golden goose and the golden harp. He ends up with the egg yet it felt like there were some scenes missing. He finds the treasure room and you see the harp, yet it never goes anywhere with it. It feels like they filmed something for this and then edited it out.

I actually thought the movie was going to be over when they escaped from "giant land". The end battle was a nice extension. But why was only one giant a freak? Those two heads kinda creeped me out.

Overall I enjoyed it. Much better than that forgettable Hansel and Gretal flick. Good family movie, I recommend giving it a whirl.

I saw it about a month ago on DVD. I enjoyed it. I was not expecting much more than what I saw in the previews so it worked for me. But I kept thinking the giant that wanted to kill the two headed one and take over looked familiar.
