    May 22, 2012 - Iconic DC Comics Character - Gay #1

DC’s new gay character will be ‘major,’ ‘iconic’ — and apparently male | Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources – Covering Comic Book News and Entertainment

Is Batman gay? Major DC Comics character to come out of the closet | Mail Online

I've thought they should changed what the initials DC stood for since they rebooted their entire line. And, well... I think this strengthens my reasoning.

Detective Comics is now Desperate Comics - and really has been for awhile. DC is so hungry for headlines and sales that they'd do just about anything - the new 52, stupid costume changes and now taking an existing character and making them gay.

That, in and of itself I really don't have an issue with (well, I will bicker at changing an iconic character with established lore just for change's sake). But, I really don't think they're doing this for social reasons - this is a headline and money grab - this is DC using a so-called cause for their own purposes.

It's for sure a money grab, DC does it all the time with killing of Superman then Batman only to have them come back. DC does really well with movies and animated features but they're comics don't seem to really adapt and from what I saw of the new 52 I can't say I'm impressed. Marvel has a better grasp of recreating their characters in new ways such as the Ultimates Universe and such.

I agree. This is just causing controversy where there doesn't need to be any. If DC wants to introduce a new character, who also happens to be gay, then fine, that's totally different. But taking an existing, well-known character and announcing a change to their sexual preference in this manner is, as you mentioned, obviously a grab for headlines/attention.

does this really matter? i mean its not like DC comics have major sexual relationship story arcs. its about fighting crime, not dating people. its probably gonna be like: Hey im gay, now we will never mention it again and continue fighting crime...

    also, its aquaman

Hahah, oh. Well, in that case, I don't think anyone will care, because everyone already knows Aquaman is gay.

Why don't they just let these characters come out in the story rather than announcing it? Cripes, when Wonder Woman said she didn't have either a boyfriend or a girlfriend at her book signing, no one cared. When Renee Montoya was outed by Two Face as a lesbian, nobody cared (except in regards that they cared for her as a character). But when DC decided to announce Batwoman was going to be a lesbian in the new 52? Headlines!

Gosh darn it all. If you're going to have a character be gay, don't announce it. Let it play out. Like showcasing a cover of Wonder Woman kissing her half-brother.....

How do they sell issues if they don't announce it!?!?

We've had gay mainstream comic characters for years; Vibe, Northstar come to mind and I believe that goes back 20 years or so (I thought Batwoman was a lesbian before the new 52?). But, this the new era of DC (aka Desperate Comics) were we make changes not for story or character sake - but for HEADLINES.

That second title really doesn't do justice. Naming Batman in it? Considering Batman and Catwoman get it on in one of the new 52 Catwoman issues. Did they think that comic nerds would miss that?

Marvel did this with the Rawhide Kid, a silver age cowboy comic. And they made him the biggest cliche 'gay boy' you could make.
Obviously the writers and artists had no idea how to make it happen.

Announcing the issues story is one thing, making a fuss over something that can be saved within the context of the comic itself is another.

Most superheros are Gay, some of them run around in Lycra Pants or Tights, and because they can't date through fear of their alternate identities being discovered they all hang out together

i can just see it now, superman, the flash , Batman etc all doing the YMCA

I'm not condoning it - I'm just stating DC's case.

She's been a lesbian since they re-vamped the character, which actually was before the New 52. She showed up some on the Bat-stories, and was often featured in Detective Comics.
She was originally used sometime around the 50s, and was always angling to get Batman's attention. Her neice Betty tagged along as the first Batgirl.

I personally love the way they redesigned the new Batwoman, including her being gay and having a history with Renee Montoya.
I am all for creating diverse characters, but I agree that it would be better if they didn't make any character gay just for headlines.

In other news, Marvel again seems to be more on-point with the right way to go about things:
