Top 5 (in no particular order)

    Alien
Near Dark (good call Sgt! although it does seem a little dated these days it is one of the best vampire movies out there)
    Jaws
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (love 'em both but I'll go with 1978 here)
The Thing (1982) - just watched it again. Still great.

These usually round out my top 5.

    1. The Exorcist (one of the finest and most effective horror films I can think of, even if not my personal favorite).
    2. Let's Scare Jessica to Death (I love so much horror cinima from the 1970s, and this move scared me badly as a kid. It still I think works on different levels, and the entire vampire genre is sort of boring to me compared to other monsters).
    3. Freaks. (Browning as director. Amazing film).
    4. Eraserhead.
    5. House on Haunted Hill (the remake by Lionsgate. I know it is not the finest example, but it is a total guilty pleasure, and I love the performance by Geoffrey Rush. The insane asylum set is so cool, too).
    6. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and I almost hate to admit, Diary of the Dead (who doesnt love George Romero, though his last few have been pretty aweful. He is the master of a genre he pretty much invented. Some of the remakes have been pretty bad, but most have some fun stuff in them)
    7. Finally, the AMC series The Walking Dead. I just can't say enough about this program, and just saw the trailer for season 3. I can't wait!

Thanks! Easily my favourite vampire flick.

They aren't all "pretty", don't have super-duper strength/speed, aren't flashy dressers... And they don't sparkle in sunlight; they burst into frickin flames!

What they "are" is a group of vicious murderers who will slash your throat with a smile, and are having fun with being immortal. Truly scary bunch.

It's funny... my wife forced me to watch Twilight, so I had her watch Near Dark.

    She hated it.

    1. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. The original ABC Movie of the Week from 1973 still scares me to this day, and I love watching horror movies.
    2. The Grudge. Don't know if it's just the creepy actors or the direction, but it's scary!
    3. Night of the Living Dead. Saw this at the drive-in when it first came out. It was the second feature after the lame The Green Slime and really freaked me out. Pretty tame now, but in 1968, for an eight year old... good times.
    4. The Last Man on Earth. Something about the scene where Vincent Price's wife comes to the door and tries to get in always scared me. Reminds me of Years Gone By from The Walking Dead where Morgan's wife tries to open the door.
    5. The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Never found it scary, but the gillman is still my favorite horror character.

I was going to put Black Sunday on my list, but I've never seen the whole movie. I was watching it on Chiller Theater in Pittsburgh back in the 60s or 70s and never made it through the whole film. What I saw was pretty scary as I remember.

    In no particular order:

    The Thing
    Evil Dead II
    The Lost Boys
    The Fly
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Also, Cabin in the Woods. Seriously one of the best horror films I've seen in many, many years. It's definitely a film that anyone who's a fan of horror should see. It's finally releasing on DVD/Blu-ray this September, I can't wait!

Ah, I had forgotten about Martyrs! Such a good one, very original, very graphic!

Word of advice to anyone who hasn't already seen Martyrs and plans to, watch it with the original subtitles, NOT the English dub. The voiceovers are awful, some of the dialogue was changed, and doesn't make much sense at times.
