Feb 22, 2011 - Have you ever re-edited a movie or tv show into your ideal version ? #1

Have you ever watched a film or tv show and thought something along the lines of "great show, but if only it didn't have that bit" ?

I've never seriously considered doing this myself but it got me thinking about the more techy folk on here. With the amount of editing software available for a home PC it would probably be fairly easy to make your own version of a "Directors Cut". Perhaps removing something you don't like, or editing in a deleted scene.

So have any of you ever did this ? I'm aiming this question more at the home PC users, not professional editors.

Is it sacrilege to re edit someone else's work, even if it's only for your own entertainment ?

I once thought about putting pulp fiction in chronological order.

I wish I knew how. I'd love to do fan edits (for my own enjoyment). If it's just for you, it's no sacrilege at all. Somewhere I have a list, with time codes, of stuff I'd cut from the PT.

Check out Fan Edits where there's hundreds of top quality edits. Mainly by shortening bad movies. Or by reorganizing scenes, like Pulp Fiction.

I've considered re-editing the following so that they have happier endings:

Old Yeller- In my version, the dog had received a recent rabies vaccination and turns out to be fine.

The Mist- While in the car, the radio is on and they hear about the mist going away. As the military goes by killing off the last of the creatures, they get out of the car and begin to party. It ends with a montage like Animal House where we find out what happened to all the characters in a few years.

Titanic- In this version ship makes it safely to New York… Leo still gets killed, but it happens when they get to New York and lights up a cigarette when he gets off the boat. He is then beaten to death by Mayor Bloomberg, who says he will not allow smoking in his city.

Pay it Forward- Haley Joel Osment engages a group of bullies… but is packing heat. He shoots each of the bullies in the knee caps, ensuring that he does not kill them, but they’ll walk funny for the rest of their lives. He then grows up to be an awkward looking teenager that is never heard from again.

Hannibal- In this version, Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling fall in love and run off to Argentina, where they live happily ever after.

I did for Gattaca and then loaned out the DVD and never saw it again and I want to edit Transformers to get rid of the crap but then I'd have about a 30 minute movie, and that's estimating high.

Funny enough I did this for "The Hunted" (the one with the ninjas ).

Basically I rearranged the ending so it looks like Takeda chops Kinjo's head off before succumbing to his own wounds.

    I hated the original ending.

Blip- "Somewhere in Time" already has a happy ending.

For me, I will admit, I thought about taking the whole RIS "Battlestar Galactica" series and making a new "TV Movie" called "Battlestar Galactica: Tale of the Broken Cylon." The idea behind it is that it would tell the story of Boomer, the Model 8 Cylon from the start to end of her story, showing her downward spiral in chronological order. Basically, it would show that her story is actually a tragic tale (but due to the way it was presented in the show, no one got how tragic it was). I would have included deleted scenes (including the scene where she wakes up as Boomer for the first time, where we see she is informed of Troy), showed more emphasis on how Cavil pulling and pushing Boomer in and out of sleeper mode caused some sort of programming error that lead only to the Boomer persona to download and not the true personality and so on. The only problem with it is that it'd be quite a long film.

I also considered on doing edits on the three sequels to "Psycho", not only converting them to black and white, but make some cuts to remove or shorten up scenes of gore, tighten up the continuity between the films and actually end Norman's story on a happy one (where when he says, "I'm finally free.", you get a good sense that he is). Also, each film would have their opening credits similar to the original film's opening credits and the iconic "Psycho" theme would be there too.

I have wished I had the software to re-edit a movie sometimes.
I saw "The Green Hornet" at the movies and wished the editing had been tightened up. I would love to edit out out some of the lamer moments of Seth Rogen and some of the lapses of logic.
I would like to edit some of the elements from the original American cut of "Highlander" and parts of the director's cut.

Russ257, I've had that same thought. The movie would still have a solid ending with Bruce and his girlfriend roaring off on the chopper after Bruce says "Zed's dead...etc

What about a re-edit of BLADERUNNER down to 20 mins as a short film, editing from Rachael's POV. So we only see what she sees. Maybe we get flashbacks as Deckard washes out his mouth...to show how he got where he was.
Actually, I know of some fan edits that have done something like that, by taking the feature length and turning it into a "short film." Over at fanedit.org, I've seen them do "short film" collections that focus on certain topics the "shorts" being edited down from longer narratives.

One that comes to mind because I just watched it this weekend is Adywan's fan edit of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back... To read his list of tweaks, additions, subtractions and just plain editing that he put into his cuts is simply amazing for a fan edit... Even though I don't agree with many of his edits, it's still a show of amazing dedication...

I put all the extra TV scenes into the theatrical Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It was a gift for a friend--his favorite movie.

DVD ripping software, the movie/TV show you wish to edit on DVD and Editing software.

In some cases, people actually take it up a notch by using 3-D modeling software for older TV shows that used model effects. An example can be seen in this clip from the original "Battlestar Galactica", where we see a shot of the Vipers and Shuttle landing on Kobol (which previously was not included). Some even use Adobe After Effects to enhance scenes that they feel should have used some sort of effect.

It was his quickie color corrected version of ESB, not the full edit he has been working on for years...
