May 7, 2012 - Good Earlier Films - Seldom Seen or Heard of - Must See #1

My target audience is mostly the 30 year and younger crowd. I thought I would start a thread listing what I felt were great films that are seldom seen or heard of. I found that time and time again I'd mention a title of a film and found that many have never heard of or seen them perhaps because they are locked into the most recent films and never bother to expand their palette (so to speak), to earlier movies (mostly predating the 70's) and of which I feel are missing out on some great movie experiences.
Now I realize not everyone here falls into that category and alot of the older and some younger members know of or have seen most of these films. But it is my desire to help expand the film experiences to the much younger movie loving members. I hope next time you are looking at the video rental store or browsing Netflix you might try giving some of these films a look-see on your next movie night with your wife, family, girlfriend or friends. Some films are non existent on DVD, no longer available or were only available on VHS tape so you may have to do some searching. Some of these films can also be seen on late night TV if you are lucky to run across them.
I have listed a mixture of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, drama, action, good 'ol swash bucklers, comedy, good "chick flicks", musicals and animation. I have also added the date since several versions of the same title were made on a few of the films. I will add films as I can think of them....enjoy.

Please note that this list is only a personal opinion and I've enjoyed all these films while growing up. I feel you can't go wrong watching one of these films on your next movie night.

Gunga Din (1939). One of the original action/adventure films that's the Raiders of its day. Huge fights, shoot-outs, dynamite, romance, humor...everything. Great fun film.

"All Through The Night" (1941) - With Humphrey Bogart. Great fun with shady type characters up against a Nazi spy/sabotage network.

I've added more films. I happen to catch "Man of a 1000 Faces" on Turner Classic Movies the other night on TV. It made a nice movie to watch while working on a project. If I happen to get advanced wind of any of the films on my list or the others you guys have posted I'll let you know...assuming those networks are available in your area. Although some films on my list I've been wanting for my film library I might catch on late night TV, they have never been available on Video Tape, Laser Disc or DVD nor have I ever seen them on Netflix or instant streaming.

"The Detective" - with Frank Sinatra

Based on the novel of the same name by Roderick Thorp.

He later wrote a sequel called "Nothing Last Forever" that was adapted into a movie ..... DIE HARD!

Great call on Fried Green Tomatoes. I get teased by my friends about liking a chick flick, but its such a great movie.

    Some additional recommendations:

    What's Eating Gilbert Grape
    Double Indemnity
    Beautiful Girls
    Albino Alligator

Wannab...thanks for your input. Weather they "qualify" or not its still a good list and its only my personal opinion of films I've listed. Most of the films I'm trying to list are before the 70's with a few exceptions. I feel the age group I'm trying to reach hadn't heard of most of them.

I've also now alphabetized the list for easier searching.

I guarantee that a huge proportion of teens today have never heard of Citizen Kane.

I'm always amazed when young folk have never seen a Star Wars movie, know who Captain Kirk is or watched Jaws, much less a b&W classic like Kane. Ask them what the latest generation of iPhone is, or how many followers they have on Twitter and they will be all over it. I'm generalising, of course, but as a parent of teenage children this is my experience.

My kids, however, have been force-fed an education in pop-culture and classic cinema by their movie-obsessed Dad (me).

Battleground and Sahara; two of my favorite WWII flix. Battleground is a bit more of a traditional war film, while Sahara is more of a drama set in the war. Two solid films though. Give 'em a shot.

Dark Star (1974). Not sure about good, but definitely interesting. There are some scenes with a beach ball and an elevator that are the basis for Aliens.

Another great adventure film is The Man Who Would Be King directed by John Huston. Connery and Caine at their finest. Great story, fab film. A must see.

A second great forgotten Connery flik is Robin & Marian. Connery as Robin Hood, Nicol Williamson as Little John, Denholm Elliot as Will Scarlett, Richard Harris as Richard the Lionheart, Audrey Hepburn as Maid Marian, Ian Holm as King John, and Robert Shaw as the Sheriff of Nottingham. I mean, come on!

Also, William Friedkin's Sorcerer. Roy Scheider is aces. Man, there's a scene with a truck on a crumbling rope bridge that will have your heart in your mouth!

All these are from the 70s, so not that early (at least to me), but I'll bet a lot of you haven't seen them.

Guys...could you please add the release date? There were at least 4 films with the name Sahara but I'm assuming your talking about the earliest one with Humphrey Bogart (1943).
