Game Diversity Survey

Weird, it's taken until the second decade of the 21st century for game developers to begin realising that, just maybe, not every gamer is a white, cis, hetero male, so maybe the game characters don't all have to be.
[/sarcasm][/social commentary]
That said, some games (the Elder Scrolls series comes to mind) have been pretty good at giving wide-ranging options on race/gender

The only reason the game companies are taking note is they're losing money because gamers are starting to realize they can make a difference by not buying a game. Now the companies need to tackle bullying and the little SOBs screaming into mikes during multiplayer games. The industry seriously has a laundry list of issues to deal with on top of this one.

The problem with those types of surveys are blanket statements. They don't ask for any clarification. For example, there's a push to make gay characters, which is fine if it's a choice. I don't want to be forced to play a gay character. I don't have any problem with gay people at all, I just don't want to be forced to play that character. It should definitely be an option in a game where you get to make your character (like a RPG) though. Then obviously the flip side of that is maybe game developers should rethink romance themes in a game because a gay person probably doesn't want to have their male character romance the girl in the game.

The other question was about playing a character with different physical limitations. What does that mean? Most game characters I play have different physical limits than me. I can't jump on the back of a dragon to kill it or run into fire without getting hurt. I definitely think there's an interesting possibility of having a handicap main character. It would force you to rethink how you're going to save someone or solve a puzzle.

As far as gender goes, I remember Battlefield 3 and 4 got flak because there wasn't a model for a female soldier. I have a few female friends who played them both and they said for that game they wouldn't use a female soldier in game. They get enough harassment when guys playing hear them in game.

I'm white male, and have no problems playing a different race character. As a matter of fact, my skyrim character is a female of mixed race because I find women of other races to be attractive. And if you really take another look around at other things, Subzero and Scorpion from MK are both half Chinese half American (subzero) and Japanese (Scorpion) Jon Stewart Green Lantern (one of my favorites) is black.
