Jun 30, 2012 - Dish Network is yanking AMC (no more Breaking Bad for me!) #1

I'm pissed! Just read this DISH dropping AMC this weekend - UPI.com

I was geared up for the last season of Breaking Bad. >yank<, no soup for you! So looks like I'll have to wait till the DVD's hit the street next year. Pissed I tell ya!

They are also dropping WE (don't care) and IFC (watch some movies).

Yeah that sucks, AMC has a lot of shows people really like including Mad Men and Walking Dead so that sucks, luckily I have Comcast so I am good.

Sucks for those who watch AMC via dish, that's for sure. Of course it's just a negotiation tactic. Gotta pull it before something good comes on to create viewer furor. AMC wants lots more, Dish doesn't wanna pay it. Pretty much sums it up.

As to the TC, you may be the first person to ever utter the words 'luckily I have Comcast'

Unfortunately AMC gets a few popular shows and the want more money then networks that get double their ratings. And while their having their little war, they will be the first to complain when people download shows from the Internet. They're both oblivious that the business model is changing and they seem determined to go down in flames together.

I like how the Dish rep says that they're not going to reconsider despite people dropping the service over it.

What kind of ignorant nonsense is that? If your customers get pissed and stop paying you, how are you going to make money?

It's clearly just a purse fight between the two companies that the paying customers are caught in the middle of.

These people are so out of touch with reality its just amazing that they still operate.

Dish didn't care when we dropped them over the bad service. Time warner just got rid of a bunch of free HD channels i picked up since december on my new tv and replaced them with HD duplicates of the local stations I don't watch.

The problem is, if Dish pays what AMC wants, who do you think is going to pay the higher cost. It won't be Dish, I can tell you that!

You should blame AMC, they are trying to bully a bunch of the distributors because they think they can with the success of Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

It's this way with the cable companies too. They never threaten to get rid of anything you just find a 10.00 bump in your bill or more. They need to start letting you choose what channels you get and charge you for just those. We'd have like a 40.00 a month bill.

It worked for Directv with Versus (now NBC Sports) and some other channel I can't recall offhand. They got into the same basic dispute and dropped the channels, 4-5 months later, the channels reduced their demands and returned to the lineup.

The amount of customers that Dish will lose over this is much smaller than the amount of money AMC will lose in rights fees.

Not to mention that if the pay AMC what they want, then every other station with better ratings that get payed less is going to want more money. Before you know it, you'll be paying 150 a month for basic. To put it in context, AMC currently get 25 cents per subscriber. They now want 75 cents per subscriber. A pretty big increase, and is 66% higher than Food network, which has .1 million more viewers.

You may now want to look into watching the show online (either at the AMC.com website or possibly through a site like Hulu, if they have it).

Exactly. AMC is banking on fan reaction blaming the content providers to support absurd demands.

To be fair, who wouldn't want a 200% raise?

Similarly, i can't imagine many companies would want to foot the bill for a 200% raise either.

More food for thought, Boron's right. If they give them a 200% raise, everyone else will want one, too. Anyone want to pay 3x your going rate for TV?

I watch a bunch of stuff on Hulu already so if they do carry Breaking Bad (via Hulu Plus) I'll be SO in.

I hadn't heard that part of the story. Left out for convenience to sway opinion I imagine.

If that's the case, I guess we'll see where it goes. Pretty hard to AMC to make money if no one is showing their content.

Still a big purse fight if you ask me.

Blame AMC too. They screwed up when they canned Frank Darabont and cut the production budget on The Walking Dead while simultaneously prematurely ending the series, Breaking Bad, for their less viewed but critically acclaimed hour-long cigarette ad. Now they want to pressure not just DISH, but AT&T too? If you're an AT&T subscriber, you lost AMC too.

DISH customers don't lose a thing though. They'll rebate you the cost of buying the show on Itunes or Amazon for the season on your bill.

Netflix streaming carries Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, and Mad Men -- just not the current seasons. I don't have cable so am willing to wait. Also, I like only paying about $8 bucks a month for TV!

I actually got rid of my channels and newspapers when the recession started back in 2007. I got fed up with watching and reading the doom and gloom. Now I just use the tv to play games and watch movies on bluray. My inlaws have cable and when I watch it I just get impatient with all the frigging adverts. Now I'm just happy waiting longer and waiting until the stuff I want to see comes out on dvd or bluray.
Maybe I'd feel differently if I watched it for sports but I don't follow them. I'm amazed that some channels stretch a two hour movie over three or four hours because of the adverts, its crazy.

The only time AMC is on in my house is for The Walking Dead. I'm bummed it won't be on my line up and I will have to be more creative to watch the new episodes when they come out but that certainly isnt a channel that I would pay more for.

I read via Walking Dead's Twitter that they had reached an agreement with AT&T and will not be dropped however did not come to an agreement with Dish.
