Any Deadwood fans here? It's on sale today on Amazon for $79, and just wondering what the consensus was around here? Any good?

The Deadwood series is amazing! I saw the whole thing for free from the library, though.

Devastating that this series never saw completion. I loved it.

I don't have Netflix (and don't want to sign up just to rent one series). Renting isn't really an option for me. I don't mind buying if it's seriously good (like BSG or The Sopranos), and I'll watch it again.

Better than the former, almost as good as the latter.

That reminds me - I still haven't finished the last few episodes (had the Netflix rented disks in my possession since August!). I think I'm just afraid to have it end. If I don't watch the last couple eps - then it'll never end

Deadwood accompanies Star Trek TOS, Mad Men, Hill Street Blues, and Moore's BS:G on my list of Top 5 hourly dramatic faves.

So, you know, I say spend the $79.00.

Good series, but yeah, never resolved. Canceled due to the ineptitude of Chris Albrecht. Same goes for Carnivale, which had a TON of potential. (yes, I know I'm being harsh on the guy, but HBO REALLY fell from favor with me for a while, and only recently came back with True Blood and season 2 of Epitafios).

I rate it up there with I, Claudius and The Prisoner as some of the best TV ever made.

Re: Deadwood fans?

Ok ok ok! I BOUGHT the freakin' thing! It was actually $74 (not $79), so even better, and free shipping with Amazon Prime. It's back up to $99 today, so I can handle a 25% off sale!

I figured that I *might* be able to watch 3 of the discs per month. At $9/month and 19 discs in the series, it would take me about 6 months and around $54 to rent the series. I spent $20 more and I get to keep it, so I'm totally cool with that.

Since George Lucas says that he wants the upcoming live action Star Wars TV series to be like "Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space", and I already have The Sopranos, this might be a good time to check out Deadwood.

Thanks for the input!

Now there's two series that I thought were not only worth watching but enough reason to keep paying for cable!

Alas I moved, lost cable and therefore track of both of those shows. I have no idea how they ended but I was maybe into the second or so season of both and used to eagerly await each new airing.

So back to your original question:

IMHO Deadwood was right up there with the best that TV had to offer in a series.

<<< Ahem.

Either you'll like it or you won't -- no middle ground on this one.
Loved it right away, and for me it gets better the more times I watch.
I think it needed one more season to really tie it with bow, but I can pretty much figure how things would have gone down.

Hope you enjoy c***sucka!

Re: Deadwood fans?

Well, it arrived this morning! I ordered it about 1AM Thursday, and got it about 9AM this morning. Can't beat 1 day shipping, and it was free (since I ordered it with Amazon Prime).

I'll get to watchin' it as soon as the kids are in bed.

Re: Deadwood fans?

Back when when I bought the first season, I was planning on watching 1 episode a night. I ended up watching the entire season in two night. Definitely one of the top 3 series ever produced.

Re: Deadwood fans?

I watched the first 2 episodes yesterday (all I could watch before my kids woke up), and then 4 more episodes this morning.

Love the show, as I thought I probably would. It *might* be better than The Sopranos. The Sopranos had excellent writing, but there were only a handful of characters that I actually cared about what happened to them. Deadwood has amazing writing AND I care about almost ALL of the characters - even the really "bad guys" (which I think is a testament to the writing).

William Sanderson (me being a fan of his from Blade Runner and Newhart) is a plus, as well as Powers Boothe, Jeffrey Jones, and Brad Dourif make it a great cast. The lady who plays Calamity Jane is excellent. She's one of the best actors on the show.

Can't wait to watch more! Thanks for the comments, guys!

Probably the best HBO series. Sopranos is very close, but the richness of the characters and plots of deadwood are so consistent from the beginning to the end that I give it the nod.

It's just a pleasure to watch. How much TV can you say that about?

I just discovered that Kim Dickens (who plays Joanie Stubbs) is from my hometown of Huntsville, AL. Another reason for me to like the series!

Wow... I was right with you up until this point. For me Calamity Jane was the worst character of the series, a total charicature of my understanding of the historical figure. She absolutely annoyed me every time she was on screen and was a sore thumb if I ever saw one. Everyone else seemed to play it straight, even Wild Bill which is sure a flamboyant character that he can be easily overplayed, but was handled well... but CJ... just aweful. Glad to see someone appreciated her performance because I sure didn't.

Well, the quality only goes up from the writing point of view. Some of the soliloquies from later in the series are Shakespearian.
