D.C.'s Constantine tv series

yeeeaaah.

not so sure about that.

IMO a commentator on io9 summed it up best:

"I appreciate the optimism being projected here, though I don't share it.

I am a huge fan of the John Constantine mythos, and I would not be happy to see a TV show made, especially a childish, watered-down version.

John Constantine is an odd character. The Alan Moore version from Swamp Thing is all but forgotten these days, and now people are most familiar with the Garth Ennis style of writing. A man who is mean, desperate, and hard.

We're talking about a guy who shot demon heroin into his junkie friend to give a monster something to consume. A guy who manifested a demon ****pig into the body of a little boy who went on to impregnate his own father. The Constantine mythology is steeped in rape, emotional abuse, and basically the most unpleasant crap an adult-comic could manage. And I would argue that's the point of Constantine comics. He's a horror character, who deals with psychologically exploitive sadomasochistic scenes. He's a bad man who confronts worse things. The worse things adult horror writers can imagine.

My favourite Constantine story might be the one where he finds the man who beat, raped, and killed his ex-girlfriend. John finds the guy, puts him on 4 hits of really strong acid, and then sticks him in a box with the warming corpse of the murdered girl. No magic, no jokes. Just people being truly grotesque and horrible.

I have a hard time imagining that even an HBO series could bring the adult horror and spiritual nihilism of John Constantine to life. And anything less will feel... empty? Meaningless? Like an insult to the original idea?

I certainly don't care for the idea of Constantine crossing over with ARROW (which was just filming the alley behind my store last night). ARROW has a cute, childish tone that works well for it, but would not fit Constantine at all.

Keeping in mind as well that SUPERNATURAL already nailed the "tan trenchcoat and a tie" look."

the writers of Hellblazer went to places no one would dare venture. Especially if they want this tv show to succeed/renewed for new seasons. I'm not asking for Garth Ennis style storylines, but i'm afraid what we will get is something so watered down and simplistic it will be "Constantine" in name only and nothing much else.

Some comic books just can't be made into tv shows or shouldn't be. This is one of them. Blade was another, it was good as an R rated movie but the watered down show just didn't cut it.

I enjoyed the Blade show, but I think the problem with it was that it shouldn't have had Blade in it. The underlying story was cool and seemed to be unfolding well. The character of Blade, though, felt out of place in comparison to the films.

Honestly, I'd rather see the Dresden Files come back. That seemed to me like it could work pretty well for TV...if only it hadn't been on freakin' SyFy...

I've pretty much written off scifi shows on tv. Walking Dead seems to be the only one with any lasting power and now they're going to ruin it with a spinoff.

Oh, there's tons of good stuff out there. There's way more crap, but there's tons of good stuff.

Shows I enjoy:

Grimm
The Walking Dead
American Horror Story
The Americans
Sons of Anarchy
Justified
How I Met Your Mother
Once Upon A Time
Boardwalk Empire
Spartacus (done now, but you can watch it on blu-ray)
Hell on Wheels
Mad Men

And that doesn't even get into the PBS/BBC stuff.

Grim is terrible
American horror story...starts great, than falls into the We have no idea how end a season / story, worst than lost was

Every other one is good to not too shabby

solo you're not a Game of thrones or Breaking Bad fan?

Grimm's quite good in my book. NBC just does a really bad job informing you when it's on. Then they pull it mid season and don't tell you when it'll be back.

One of the BBC things that's good would be Orphan Black.

Yeah if its on tv, it'll be nothing like its supposed to be, maybe good as something else, but not as Constantine. Switch the name so you dont have to follow a specific story arc, if its based on a comic, there will be expectations. If it has expectations, there's a big chance of disappointment if they're not met.

Same with Deadpool or The Mask: if you dumb it down, cartoonize it, and make it more kid-friendly, it'll be a totally different character than what its supposed to be. If the comic book was created with 85% violence, the live action adaptations need at least 65% violence (meaning R ratings and NOT tv material) lol

Actually the Mike Carey books about Felix Castor chasing ghosts and demons in London would probably translate better to TV. Carey wrote a lot of material for Hellblazer and the Felix Castor character is very similar to Constantine.

Well, Matt Ryan looks like John Constantine.

Looks a little too CW-ish. But, I still have high hopes...

I've reAd the comics. I wiped them from my mind to watch the film. Which inscrutably enjoyed. It's not too bad if u disconnect it from the real Constantine characters.
I say bring back Dresden too. It had slot of potential.

I liked most of the movie - it really had some decent stuff going on. ...I loved John's demeanor in the movie (despite not being British), I liked the look without the classic trench. Hated Keanu's monotone delivery and Shia.
