My god. The female gender does exist in this game. Maybe in their next video we might get to see them in the actual game! I bet they feel so vindicated right now.
Um... does that really matter? I mean, even if the first trailer didn't show them, they could have been mistaken for men (and yes, that was a reference to not only Vasquez, but to Dietrich and Ferro).

Being a person who isn't deaf, I can assure you that even if Dietrich was wearing the same marine armor as all the guys, I was still able to figure out she was female due to her voice. If you check teaser #1 and #2, the trailers, game play trailers and all other behind the scenes footage, there isn't a single on-screen female character in any of them. The ONLY indication of a female character we've seen officially thus far has been from the cover art and those two character sketches. That's it.

Also, if you check the multiplayer you will find that you can't play as a female marine. If you look at the exclusive content you get from pre-ordering it from stores that include movie characters, there are no female characters in the lot. No Ripley and no Vasquez. While Hicks and Hudson are great, the remainder is pretty lackluster. Drake and Apone? While I thought Drake was ok, he didn't hold a candle to the presence of Vasquez.

    YES!

If you look at the first person shooter genre, you will note that the female gender is almost like a non-existent entity. All those modern war games and future space shooters not only had you playing as a guy the whole time, but also had next to zero female characters period. The only first person shooter series that I can think of that featured a lot of females was Duke Nukem..... Who's last game, which was finally finished by Gear Box, showcased how misogynistic game developers can be to the point where even Duke Nukem fans saw that as going too far.

And guess who's working on this game? Gear Box. And guess what we haven't seen yet? A simple female character.

    Want a bonus?

I talked to one of the guys at the booth and he tells me that there will be a female character in the game, and it's going to be a scientist who serves as the main character's love interest.

    Ha....ha.....ha......

You're never gonna see a woman humping around in a war game with an infantry squad or a special ops group so get used to it dude.

There aren't many out there but there are a few women in combat games. Look at Anya in Gears of War or chick characters in Dead Island.

Manon, a Medal of Honor character based on the real life Hιlθne Deschamps Adams who fought in World War II. May not have been a part of teams sent in to dispose of nuclear weapons, but she went through more than any player character did. And with more women being given more positions in our military across the world, excuse me for saying that you're "never gonna see" comment is total hogwash.

And don't call me dude. I work for a living.

But in Aliens there were two. Why not have them in an Aliens based video game? Sure, if it were based in a real scenario, I wouldn't expect to see female grunts in a Normandy invasion sim, but in Aliens they were there.

Minor point here, but in the cross-platform Aliens vs. Predator released a year or two ago, Cpl. Teresa "Tequila" Aquila -- the one who guides you through much of the Colonial Marine campaign -- is female.

Yeah. Her presence in the game really put the roles of Ripley and Vasquez to shame by being the chick who's only real purpose is for our hero to rescue near the end and stuff her in a fridge while he goes out and does all the heroic stuff. It's kind of like comparing Samus Aran to Princess Peach. One is a intergalaxtic mercenary/bounty hunter who has fought armies of pirates, deadly life sucking aliens and gigantic alien dragons. The other is a Princess who gets captured by the same boss over and over again. That's pretty much your comparison here.

Want another minor point? The Dropship pilot in AvP2 is also female. Congratulations. The franchise is now vindicated.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I meant in all these newer modern ones like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal of honor, etc. as I understand it, women in the American military are still not allowed into combat roles?

I have no Problem with women in shooters, I just don't really care whether they're in them or not.

Also Dietrich could of totally passed for a guy

I didn't actually finish the game (mostly because it was kinda boring), so I have no idea if her only point is to be rescued. All I was saying is that we had a female marine in the game. I actually see no reason NOT to include female marines, or to let players choose a female character to play if they want. I wasn't suggesting anything about the franchise, either. Just pointing out that she was there. I don't know a ton of people who played the 2010 AVP, so I have no idea how familiar you or anyone else is with it.

In other words, I wasn't trying to attack, undermine, or belittle you, so spare me the snark.

I can respect that. I guess I was being snarky for snarky's sake. I just don't like uninformed argument points no matter how minor they may be. Especially when they miss the my whole point of the ALIENS franchise, a very gender friendly series being reduced to a macho sausage fest with the female characters acting used solely to benefit the male player character. Yes, there's probably a female character in there somewhere, but outside of two handheld games, there isn't a single ALIENS game where you play as a female marine protagonist.

And going along with Joa in his "No One Lives Forever" link, I'll throw in Star Trek: Elite Force. That was a first person shooter where you played a member of an elite security team on Voyager. This was a unique first person shooter because while you were stuck with a named character, you got to pick what gender the character was. Both parts were were even fully voiced. Outside of that, it's also one of the best Star Trek games out there.

As I was one the people who did and am still playing it(mostly to prep for colonial marines). Although Tequila seems like she will kick some butt in the beginning levels

    Spoiler:
opens up a steam valve to blast a alien that has you trapped in a room in the 1st level

    Spoiler:
in the 4th level after you save her she kills a alien or two at the very end right before unlocking a door in the bottom of the arena to let you end that level

    Spoiler:
in the next level kills a battle android or two, and a few aliens

indeed in my mind she does not really seem like the "badass" of Vasquez or Ripley, she seems just a helpless soldier you have to save on the battle field. I for one am rooting they have playable Females in MP, even if it is added later with some DLC. I usually enjoy making a hot kick butt chick in MMO's. I also think that any game based on Aliens franchise should make a kick butt female or two!

John Mulky: There's no negotiating with this thing. It's... It's going to kill you.

No, it's going to incapacitate you, wrap you up in secreted resign, let a face hugger orally rape you, which leads to a little alien embryo that kills you by eating it's way through your chest. They're not really killing machines. They're very scary looking parasites who reproduce at your expense!

Mikey Neumann: We have a lot more marines this time around.

And a lot less of something else.... I think everyone here knows what I'm talking about.

Mikey Neumann: We wanted to go as diverse as possible and create a group of people that make it feel like a bada** alien experience.

That would mean something if we could play as as a diverse character instead of being forced to play as a super powered caucasian male space marine.

Mikey Neumann: We're approaching the first person shooter differently.

Again, SUPER POWERED CAUCASIAN MALE SPACE MARINE! That's not different!

Also, new trailer, still no female characters shown.

    I like this.

Brian Martel: When you're dealing with suspense and horror, you really have to get to know characters and really have time with them to really understand and feel the loss when they're taken by the aliens.

And the only thing they have to showcase this development?

Unnamed Marine #1: Great. Now my freaking tracker is broken.
Unnamed Marine #2: Just watch for red dots.
Unnamed Marine #1: But I'm telling you, it won't- *Dies*

    Also, still no female characters.

I know the footage from the last video posted isnt from the finished game, so I'm hoping there's still tweaking to be done but I have to ask... What's up with the sound of the pulse rifle firing? Sounded way off. What makes it more strange is one of the guys working on it was bragging about getting to use the original audio sounds for the tracker and what not.

ALIENS: Colonial Marines Will Indeed Have Female Characters, Gearbox Says

And it ain't the kind of female characters that I was told would be in the game (female scientist + damsel + love interest).

I'm still curious about the female skeleton and animation issue. Anyone ever play Mass Effect 1 and 2? They had a female Shepard skeleton but it used male Shepard's same exact animation. NOBODY CARED until FemShep did stuff that was completely inappropriate like sitting down with her legs spread out while wearing a short black skirt dress, and she isn't trying to seduce anyone. If GearBox would have just made the animations more generalized, I don't anyone would raise a fuss about their animations looking similar. After all, they're the marines! They march in formation!

Still wish it gave us the option to play as one of these characters besides Winters, but this is very welcome news. Anyone want to play co-op?
