Want to see the REAL Robby the Robot* + other props and art from FORBIDDEN PLANET?
*not a Fred Barton replica.........
Well now you can (if you live in Los Angeles). The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences is setting up an exhibit of sorts - Forbidden Planet: Artifacts from the Krell | Events Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences I'll warn you in advance that cameras are generally not allowed into their building - just an FYI. Anyone know if they will print some "official" photos on the internet for us to drool over?

Re: Want to see the REAL Robby the Robot* + other props and art from FORBIDDEN PLANET
I haven't seen any official photos from the event(s), but give them some time, I'm sure they'll be up in the press area of their site. They do have some interesting, kinda related photos up on their site here - http://www.oscars.org/events-exhibit...-fi/index.html Meanwhile, I'll post a couple of crappy celphone pics.
Not only did we get to see the original Robby, it walked out from behind the stage and did a Q&A with Craig Baron and Ben Burrt (who actually pulled out his camera and snapped pictures!). ![]() After the Q&A, he was set up in the lobby. I was amazed at how good a condition he is still in. I mean, I know that Bill Malone really cares for it, but still - it's 56 years old and made out of plastic. I was expecting some type of age, but it looks fantastic. I guess the ABS or Kydex, or whatever they originally used was thick enough to withstand the test of time. Apparently, they made some new "walking" legs for the show and then used the "original" legs for the static display. But all the electronics were working. And the neon was tied in to someone doing the voice. ![]() That's John Landis in the lower left corner - as big a geek in a toy store as anyone else there. The display features the 20" saucer, a control panel from the C-57D, one of the Krell shaft pieces that travel up and down (way bigger than I imagined), artwork of the ID monster (most of which I haven't seen), a costume, Robby, and various pieces of the sound equipment that the Barron's used to make the "electronic tonalities". Definitely worth the visit if you are in town. Gene Last edited by GKvfx; 07-18-2011 at 02:32 PM. Reason: Added link |

Re: Want to see the REAL Robby the Robot* + other props and art from FORBIDDEN PLANET
The plastic that they constructed Robby's Body out of is suppose to be the same plastic that Samsonite constructed their luggage out of in the 60s. And I you ever remember seeing the commercial with the gorilla (or a man in a gorilla suit) in the cage with the Samsonite suitcase, then you know how tough the plastic is suppose to be. And you have also joined me in dating yourself.
Remember the plastic had to support a lot of weight even with the operator wearing a harness. The Krell shaft model was reported to be 54 feet long with a mirror at the end. Quite a 'miniature'! I would love to see a photo of it, but apparently none were taken. David. |

Re: Want to see the REAL Robby the Robot* + other props and art from FORBIDDEN PLANET
Well, it was also made in a time where manufacturers could use any chemical they wanted to make plastic without fear of the EPA or OSHA. Heck, three martini lunches were the norm and most men smoked like chimneys - what's an extra carcinogen in the form of a robot suit gonna do?

Great photos, thanks guys, I just wish I could afford to hop a plane to see the display!Glad to hear Robbys made out of plastic instead of metal, as ...." it promotes rust".

My Dad had a set of that Samsonite luggage that he passed on to me in the early 70s, and I have been using them for over thirty years!Robby was vacuum formed from sheets of that plastic. The plastic is orange in color, and has to be painted, or dyed. David. |

I swear, I'm starting to think that I'm the ONLY person that knows that it's very easy to buy a VIDEO CAMERA THAT CONCEALS IN A SHIRT BUTTON WITH ATTACHED DVR! ![]() I first found out about these from ThinkGeek.Com earlier this year. For reasons unknown to me, they've since stopped carrying them, but a quick Google Shopping search turns up numerous online stores carrying several models. ThinkGeek.Com still carries a T-shirt with concealed digital camera, but the artwork makes it a bit too obvious, so I think it better to get the button model and put it on a completely ordinary button-down or polo shirt and walk right into the con or museum! ![]() Or you can go with one concealed in a perfectly ordinary looking ballpoint pen, or wristwatch, or a car "keyless entry" remote key fob, or better yet, do ALL OF THE ABOVE! Head in with MULTIPLE concealed spy cameras to REALLY give them a hard time!!! ![]() Considering how much cool stuff is unveiled at Comic Con in "secret" viewings, it really is high time that geeks and fanboys started playing the role of SPIES, using these concealed cameras to film these things for the rest of us!

Re: Want to see the REAL Robby the Robot* + other props and art from FORBIDDEN PLANET
I was fortunate to see Robby and Bob Kino****a at the Demille barn in Hollywood a few years back. Then we were allowed to take as many shots as we liked, and thanks to Robby's gracious owner, got to get very close to him. Also on display that evening was the Uncle Simon head from the Twilight Zone episode of the same name. Mr. Kino****a is a living treasure, and his memories of the production were vivid.

I can't believe my last post had astericks inserted whenever I wrote the name of the Japanese designer of Robby. I know there must be language filters to keep things civil, but really?

Re: Want to see the REAL Robby the Robot* + other props and art from FORBIDDEN PLANET
Went down and saw him yesterday. Robby looks great! Funny, I was in a hobby shop in Studio City a month ago (Kit Kraft). I told the clerk I was trying to figure out how to paint my Forbidden Planet C-57D saucer hobby kit (from Polar Lights) Suddenly, a man steps out from behind a bin and tells me he couldn't help but overhear me say I was working on the C-57D kit. He says he owns the original C-57D and that he owns the real Robby too. Gave me advice on how to paint it. Just awesome! THAT'S why I like living in Southern California.
BTW, the video of the C-57D (posted above) has some great shots of the saucer's underbelly. Great reference for kit builders. I think the display ends August 7th. Get down there while you can, it's free! |
