May 30, 2012 - Prop medieval helmet identification help needed #1

on occasion a piece is acquired by Propmasters that exhausts our own research sources. This is such a piece.

An imposing looking large Medieval full head Helmet. Constructed fully of metal with a hinged and lockable horizontally opening faceplate grill. Made to a high standard, which together with the fact it is all metal, heavily lends itself to being a foreground/hero piece.

It looks to have once originally been painted all black, remnants of black paint are still clearly evident. It definitely has age to it, at least pre-1985. Would be from a film rather than a television production too.

It was sourced from an armourer who supplied the film industry for over four decades but has no memory of it's exact use.

There is a $100 Propmasters gift voucher up for grabs to the first person to submit information leading to it's positive production identification.

Good luck and may the search begin .......

Was thinking Monty Python too, a well recognized helmet from that movie looks quite similar, but has a long opening for the eyes.

Found this in a quick search, not sure how accurate, lists 67 movies about/containing knights basically, from around 1954 to present day:

All Knight Movies | List of Knight Films

I guess difficult part in the quest is confirming if screen used for sure, approx. what year/decade film may have been done. This might be harder than finding needle in haystack. Someone would have basically needed to see the film it was in and of course recognize/put two and two together to match it up with yours.

Python helmets were fiberglass, this looks to be metal.

And their chainmaille was knitted string which got soaked in the Scottish mists, but that's off topic.

EDIT: Is it probable that this helmet was used in a film made in the UK? 'cos that would thin out the haystack, so to speak.

Definitely not Monty Python, ruled that out during research.

    Yes, it is all metal.

I think it is more likely from the 1965 - 1975 period and definitely a British based production.

'Gawain and the Green Knight' was a contender as I have another helmet from the same source that was made for that, but this style is not seen in that movie.

A couple more likely contenders have been mentioned within the same time frame, 'King Arthur, The Young Warlord' and 'The Lion in Winter'. Will check those out asap.

    Keep your ideas coming though.

    thanks,

    David

Did it once have horns on the side? It reminds me of one of the Halfling helmets from Legend.

For some reason I am reminded of the suits of armor that were featured in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, though I'm pretty sure those were unpainted.

    Hey David~

I have been assembling quite an extensive book over the past 20 years, entitled "When Knights Were Bold - A Cinematic History of Chivalry in the Movies". I have close to 4,500 stills, slides, transparencies, pressbooks and yes, props. I have to say, I have NEVER seen this particular helmet in any known film I have on record...and I have most of them!

Sometimes helms and armor are made for a film and rejected by the director. I have many records of this occurring, including how the director on King Arthur refused many beautiful versions of Excalibur.

Anyway, I will be curious if anyone turns up anything on this. My thoughts are either something NOT used or used in a small budget piece, which flew under the radar.

    Dave~

One more thought! There was a British production of IVANHOE, which I had ONLY seen here on PBS. It was from the 1980's. This IS NOT the Anthony Edwards/James Mason film, which also came out at that time. This was a truly accurate version, faithful to the Scott novel and done in episodes. I have NOT ever seen this available since that time. This "could" have been the helmet that King Richard wore as The Black Knight, before he reveals himself....THIS is my best guess!

The Ivanhoe series I was mentioning was most likely this one: Ivanhoe (TV mini-series 1970) - IMDb Shot in 1970 and aired here in the States about that time and re-aired when I first saw it in 1980/1981. This version was NEVER released on VHS nor DVD here in the States.
