Jul 1, 2009 - Original CRITTERS puppet restoration and display #1

    Hey all,

We've updated http://www.TomSpinaDesigns.com today with an original Critter restoration and display project.

This puppet/prop was used in the first film. He was made with a hollow pipe inside to use as a "launcher" to crash him through a window.

As you can see, he was in pretty rough shape when he arrived, but after a good bit of work, he's much improved...

We also designed a custom acrylic base and plaque and had those made to properly display the little Crite!

BTW - if you visit the site, be sure to click on the July 16th update. It's loaded with cool pics of props, people and masks from MONSTERPALOOZA!

And don't forget to check out our other Movie Prop Restorations and Custom Mannequin Movie Prop Displays

    best,
    Tom

Amazing work as always! How did you go about repairing the foam rubber - or is that a trade secret?

I never really liked the Krites, or the "Critters" movies, even with Don Opper in it. How they made 2, 3 (w/Leo DiCaprio), and 4 (w/Angela Bassett), I'll never figure out.

Nice job on the restoration! I also find it hilarious how you've shoved the plexiglass rod up it's rear!!!!

    Beautiful work!!!!

It's truly amazing .The amount of work you're doing to restore these pieces but the end result shows no "fingerprints" of a restoration.
    A rare skill indeed!

    WELL DONE!!!!

    All the best,
    Chuck...

Great work as always! I'm continually amazed at how you NAIL that balance of how much to restore. Making it pristine wouldn't work. Leaving it partially deteriorated doesn't work. You precisely define that balance of making it look the best it can, while simultaneously keeping with the fact that it is a movie prop and is aging. You make them look as they should had they been cared for correctly all these years.
    Bravo!

    Thanks you all very kindly!!

The above really sums up a lot of my theory/feelings about restoration. Balance is definitely important... and keeping my "fingerprints" off (as someone else rightly pointed out!) is key as well.

Naturally, there is always discussion with the client and that ultimately shapes the direction of the work but I think most folks seem to like my approach and seem to want to strike that balance....

    thanks again!

    best,
    Tom
