Jun 24, 2012 - 20,000 Leagues Interest? #1

    Hi!

I'm always interested in items used in the production of Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

DIVING EQUIPMENT: Anything verifiably used in the movie: helmets, regulator fairings, boots, tanks, etc. Or maybe even gear of that type and period??

DRAWINGS: Actual production documents from which the 11-foot “Hero” Nautilus and 20,000 Leagues Diving Gear (Hero and Stunt) were built.

(Thanks, but I’m not interested in the published Disney Art Department drawings, “aftermarket” plans, “wall decorations” or the like; just the real thing, please.)

    MISCELLANEOUS Leagues items?

Most of you won't be able to help me; but this message just might reach that collector that has what I'm looking for.

If you’re interested in this sort of thing, give me a shout. If you know someone else who is, please pass on my contact information. Thank you!

    VBR,

Oh, I've got a few "reallies" in my collection; always looking for more, though.

Whatayathink? Am I wasting my time, or is there a fair amount of Leagues collectors here?

I would be a Leagues collector if I had a larger bank account, and the stuff wasn't so darn rare. So I'll stick with being a Leagues fan. Yes, there are collectors but they just don't have large collections. I believe one member here made his home theater look like the interior of the Nautilus.

On a side note: You have some awesome stuff on your website. I salute you for your amazing accomplishments in functional Leagues diving gear, as well as, the minisub. The people here will definitely appreciate your work.

I like your signature. That first line would make a great song lyric.

I believe you're right on all points. Still looking, though.

About the side note: Thanks. Some think I'm nuts about Leagues. That movie may have generated more head-cases than the Viet Nam war, but I'm not one of those guys who wants to prance around in a red smoking jacket pretending he's Captain Nemo.

Basically, I'm just the guy who built the sub. What it became after that, especially the online thing, is strange even to me. But I dig diving, and the suits were the next step. I'm a technologist / metalsmith, and Leagues has always interested me, so that's what I do. But doing that is also a lot of fun, and that's why I do it.

If by "the people here" you mean people who make replicas; and if by "appreciate" you mean replicate; then I say, "Groovy."

I know people use VSC as a reference, and as long as we're not infringed upon, we're happy with that. I wish I had that kind of graphic reference when I was starting out. I think we had six pics back then; nothing really "clear" by today's standards. We became more accurate as our R&D led to better resources; but at first we made some glaring mistakes.

So far, the funniest thing about all that has been the guy who swore up and down his non-functional replica was based on Disney's hat; and yet he somehow managed to reproduce most of my early mistakes in his metalwork.

Yeah, we know. "Artists! Ya gotta love 'em!"

    VBR,

    Pat

I'm a life-long Leagues fan myself, so I totally get your fascination with it. But it's just so tough to collect, as others stated.

Your minisub is amazing! Holy crap!!! But then, all your pieces are amazing. "Honest to Goff" indeed. Fantastic stuff. I'm a diver as well, and having that gear on would be incredible.

You've probably seen this before, but here's a little Blog article that I thought was cool:

    Keep up the great work!

Thanks! I think Larry Brooks sent me this link a month ago. I've been looking into the Fox connection and Zoyd Luce since about 2004. Interesting topic.

I've taught people how to dive the Leagues rigs, and so far we haven't lost a man. I plan to keep diving them, and will be making disclosures about diving-related events and opportunities when they happen, on my website and/or blog. Is this for everyone? Probably not so much. But those who've had the experience, really enjoyed it.

    Film at eleven.....
