Uncharted 2: Among Theives

No argument here. I just posted my personal reasons for choosing the larger journal.

:thumbsup

I'm sorry if I come across as pushy. My wife was saying that I was moody last night and to be honest, she's probably right. I'd just driven 350 miles and was a little tired from the road.
I don't mean to be an ass but I do often fill that role. :lol

edit: it soulds like we're both using the concept of "constants" and "variables" but using different items as our constants and variables. Plus, I need to pull the tree from my butt and accept that my view isn't the only one out there. :lol

first, I'd definitely do like everyone else and leave the pages in.

second... while I prefer the LOOK of the larger journal, it's rife with scaling issues... moreso than the pocket sized at it's LARGEST, it's 4"X6".
for example, here are two pocket sized journals with a real polaroid and the real coins in them.

(this next bit is reposted from another thread where I more fully explained my scaling tests)
technically you'll NEVER get a journal with properly sized items in it. the prayer flag is like 10"X12", the pages from the german book (last pages in the journal) are about that size too (seriously, re-watch the video when drake finds that book.. thing is HUGE)
at it's LARGEST, it's 4"X6".
The size of it fitting in his pocket tells me everything I need to know but other details reinforce it.
The way his hands line up, match mine on a pocket-sized one.
The coins (all four) scale properly to the pocket sized, as does the polaroid.. on the SECOND PAGE.
Only the later items that are too large get re-scaled and honestly, they'd be re-scaled in the larger journal too.. but then you'd have scaling issues with the coins and polaroid.
here are a couple of pictures to reinforce what I'm talking about.. The first one has casts of the real coins (eg: full sized) and they match perfectly what we see in-game.
The second pic has a standard sized polaroid of my brother and me. This shot helps sell the 4"X6" part but it could still allow for this (pocket) size.

Now assuming I haven't pissed everyone off (it's REALLY not my intention) I want to reiterate that the larger journals DO look better/more impressive.
I just don't think they're accurate.

either way we can fudge the printouts by scaling them to whichever preference but the real-world items (eg: the coins) cannot be easily re-scaled.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll probably get the pocket journal instead then. I'm not to bothered with having to rescale the later parts, but would like the coins to look accurate.

No problem. :)

Wow! Really nice work from everyone here. However, I have to agree with Jedi that the journal for UC2 has to be "pocket sized" because he takes it out of his back pocket several times during the game. The journal from UC1 was the same. However, like some have stated above , the journal for UC3 is definitely larger. Drake can be seen holding it in the "Well" teaser clip released by ND.

I haven't had a chance yet to really read through this thread in detail but is there a step by step "tutorial" to make this journal listed on the site or elsewhere? I stink at making stuff but I've toyed with trying to make my own UC2 journal plus probably trying to make a UC3 one once I play through that game. :)

While looking at the Official site this morning I noticed there is another game (Golden Abyss) coming out exclusively for the PSVita.

Yep, if you search around there's a small vid showing the game in action and some of the special features of the new game. UC1 was the reason I bought a PS3 and Golden Abyss will be the reason I buy a Vita. :)

Just watched the game play video.

U3 is why I will be buying the PS3 in Nov.
I just picked up 1&2 in preparation.

It will also give me a chance to finish Tomb Raider Legend since the PC version crashes on one of the last levels so you can't finish the game.

I remember hearing about that TR bug. In fact I think it happened on some of the console versions too. I use to play TR all the time before Uncharted. The Uncharted games just blow those out of the water though. LOL :)

Yeah, definitely start play UC1 and especially UC2 because 3 is a lot like 2.....I played the UC3 Beta Test and that was a lot like UC2.

Well the issue isn't really whether it's pocket sized. We already know it is.
The problem is that the journal seems to change size through out the game.
For example the journal has two american passport pages side by side on one of the journal page.. Passport pages would not be able to fit side by side on he pocket size journal.
Then there's the pages from that old German book. In the game the German book is a lot bigger than the journal but yet he torn pages fit perfectly in drakes journal.
Just a few examples of the journals size changing properties.

Btw does anyone have screencaps of nathans journal from the new game.
I've been avoiding uncharted 3 stuff to avoid story spoilers.

Aside from the shot by the well that Pitfall mentioned, I don't think there really are any yet (I could be totally wrong).

Thanks DJedi.

Just went ahead and took a chance ay looking at the well scene from the game.

From what I can tell, the journal is indeed the 5"X 8.25" version. Also looks like it's a soft cover version and has less pages (thinner) than the journal from Uncharted 2.
Also still has the curved edges.

Probably this version -

Still hard to tell if the book is dark blue or black though.

Honestly, these days I tend to lean toward black for both of them.. the more I look at the UC2 journal, the more I think we're getting some sort of rendering artifact or kind of the superman "blue" hair effect (deliberately make it look dark blue to still show detail)
That said, I'm still probably going to make mine DARK blue (if I ever get off my duff and finish it)

Yeah, I know the picture your talking about and I don't believe THAT was supposed have been ripped from the book in the Ice Temple because it never shows him doing so. Although, truth be told it never shows him adding anything to the journal either.

From the gamers perspective the journal is supposed to just be a tool to visually show the amount of info you've gathered from the plot. The further you get in the game the more info is added. It's the same thing with Lara Croft's backpack in the TR games. Heck, that thing physically wasn't big enough to carry hardly anything YET the game would have you pulling out a bazooka from it. :lol So, creating a backpack in real life that would fit everything she carried would be a bit ridiculous.

Women who cosplay Lara Croft make the backpack the size it appears in the game. The same goes for Drake's journal. From a costuming standpoint I would go for the smaller "in game" size and forgo making it "real world" accurate. That's just me though. :)

But when you end up sizing things down it dosent look "real world accurate" because in real life there much larger. Technically it does fit in his pocket but as soon as its in his hands it appears larger.

I dont have the screencap but another shot of the jounal appears in the trailer where hes reading the dreamers of the day quote.
