Apr 14, 2009 - X-Men patch needed *OR* Who here knows a lil' about custom embroidery? #1

I'm looking for an emboidered X-Men red and yellow "X" patch similar to this one only without the "X-Men" text across it.

I know I can just get crafty with some cloth and acrylic paint to create the patch, but I really wanted something more substantial. There's custom embroidery places on the web that can make it for me but at 64 bucks a pop it's too rich for my blood. Is anyone here well-versed in custom embroidery or can point to to someone who does who won't charge me an arm and a leg for a single three-inch patch?

As always, sirs, your help is much appreciated.

Places that sell school uniforms usually have embroidery machines to badges and logos and such, I'm not sure what format your image has to be in, probably vector. Usually charges a few quid per 1000 stitches and a set-up cost. I don't think it's cheap to do a one-off unfortunately.

Maybe, you could be sly and contact a mass producer of embroidered badges, make out that you're a company or distributor or retailer, ask for a price quote on making the badge and supply a sample, and then find a way to say it's not exactly what you were looking for.

I want an embroidered Umbrella Corp patch.

I don't think that will work. In my experience with patches and badges, the company will charge you a fair whack for that sample - refundable when you order. So it is possible to cheat and get a 'run' of two or three, but they will be very expensive. Sorry!

over at the RL these guys have made some of our patches: http://www.lapelpinsrus.com/patches.html

They're pretty reasonable but you have to do a minimum run of 100. And I believe you have to supply the design file. My only suggestion would be to either do a run yourself and then sell the remaining patches off, or try and find enough people to get the money together to do the run.

    http://costumecostumecostume.com/patches.htm

If you click there and scroll down a bit, they have some "blank" X-patches. I recently found these, but haven't ordered any yet. I actually did a jacket with similar patches on each shoulder, but they had "Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters" around them, so I just blacked the letters out with a fabric marker. It actually has a cool effect, as you can only see the text if you're up close-- but I would have preferred these blank versions instead. Ah, well. In any case, they'll hopefully help you out, tho. Unfortunately, they're not in the exact color combination you're looking for.

Alternatively, there are "on-demand" embroidery places such as kiosks in shopping malls that do this sort of stuff. Depending on the person you get to help you, he/she might be able to assemble a circle and an x into the design, rather than charging you for a completely custom setup. I've had mixed experiences with places like this, as some of the workers are very helpful and willing to try/figure stuff out for you (even if it is as simple as putting an x inside a circle), but others will just look at you and say, "If it's not in the book, we can't do it."

Yeah, I saw those patches at costumecostumecostume.com, but it's just off in a way. I think I'll just end up painting my own (sigh).

    Thanks anyways, guys!

Though not exactly what you described, Patchgeeks has a few X-Men patches here: http://www.scifigeeks.com/index.php/...4325_5629_5644

Yup... those are the ones I was talking about with the "Professor Xavier's..." writing, Genie. They don't look half bad with the black-on-black text (once I changed the color, that is).

But FakeBritishAccent-- try one of those places in the mall. I'm not sure where you live, but they can be found in a couple of malls by me here in NJ, for example. If you're lucky, you can get someone who will help you out. Like I said, it's not a difficult thing to design (or even just composite with a creative use of an "x" and an "o" in the proper font(s))-- you just have to make sure they get the thickness of the X and the circle the way you want it. Once they have the shape, they can add outlines, etc. with no problem. But again, it all depends on how helpful (and willing) the shop/kiosk worker is.

I have been tempted to make one of the comic book x-men outfits, so if you do a run of the patches, update us as I may want to jump on that wagon.

Maybe I should get an interest list going...if I custom order it the more people who want one, the cheaper they'll be.

I use a place that does 25 quantity runs and very reasonable...They helped me make a run of these:

I really need to get a better picture done, this is a sample and scanned by them so it looks pretty washed, but the actual patch looks like:

I've sent a request to my suppliers to see if we can get this made. I think they carry the one you posted (with the "X-Men" logo). I've asked if they can do a run without the logo.

    We'll see what they say...

Definitely interested in one or two. I have a leather trench coat I used for a previous Gambit costume and a patch would be a great addition.
