Jul 30, 2012 - What does everyone use to separate their Iron Man helms after fiberglass? #1

Finished the fiberglass this weekend inside the helmet, and poured a thin coating of rondo for rigidity. I'm thinking separating the mask into its 4 pieces NOW, would be smarter than doing it after all the bondo work.

My question is, are you guys just using regular cutting wheels for your dremels to do the surgery? Or have you found a particular bit or tool that makes it easier? Trying to minimize the gaps now, and also increase the accuracy with which I make the cuts.

Already have the extension tool so that should help alot.

I was planning on using the regular cutting wheels that work with my dremel.

Yeah, those tend to cut really thick, and not give very much flexibility for corners etc. Besides, they create a lot of dust, and wear down super fast.

Try the diamond cutting wheels......but be warned, they cost 30 dollars!

I suppose a good question is, should I finish the helm with bondo and sculpting BEFORE I cut her free?

Or cut it up, then do bondo?

I'm concerned that I may not be able to get the curves exactly right if I cut it first.

    Thoughts?

I plan on seperating the jaw from my Dr. Doom after resining and light fiberglassing. That way, I can build my means of reattaching into the parts before the final fiberglassing and bondo work. Any small gaps can be addressed with bondo at that time.
Look at it this way: You do all that work to get the curves right, then you ding them up during the cutting process. Gotta rework them now. Why not save final work for after the cuts? If the cuts are smooth, no time lost.

    My opinion, though..

That was pretty much my reasoning behind doing the surgery now, as opposed to after I was done making her look beautiful. LOL

Ok. You talked me into it. Surgery tonight it is!

Even if you detach them now you'll have to add some filler around the edges to fill out your cutting channels to ensure a close fit between edges , so I would cut, prep and finish each piece as you go , and diamond dremel is my preferred cutting tool Yes it's expensive but worth it in the long run
