Warcraft Lich King build

Hello, RPF people!

This is my first real thread here. Usually I hang out at a little fb page called Obsessive Creative Disorder. (https://www.facebook.com/OCDcreations) A pretty apt description for my relationship with creation. I like to build stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. Recently (about a year and half ago) I built my first costume and have been working my way from there. So far I've made two. A Salamanders Space Marine and a Techpriest Magos, both from Warhammer 40k.

But this thread is supposed to be about the Lich King, so I'll have to reference you to my fb page for any comments or questions on those two ;-)

Anyways, this is as much as I have, thus far!

Frostmourne! Sandwiching laser-cut plastic (well, floor protection for office chairs, really) and plywood, this soulstealing hand-and-a-half sword is a construction made up of screen captures, Shadeling's pepakura unfolds and dumb luck! Later to be introduced to LED lights, capacitators and a glove with a string of copper in it. Why, you ask? Well, naturally to make the blade 'wooom' to life when the king of Lichii (Liches? Lichs? Lichschschs?) grabs it and when he lets it go it slowly wanes.

And of course, the crown! Only the finest cereal package make up the basis for this jagged piece of undeath corruption, mounted on EVA foam based on Shadeling's unfold! (Seriously, thanks dude!)

Being the King of undead also brings some benefits. Like never having to poop, armies of undead to do your bidding and glowing eyes :)

That's it, so far! Expect more updates as I progress :)

Re: Wargraft Lich King build

So tonight I wired and soldered the runes for Frostmourne. Hours upon hours of careful measurements, track cutting and application of blurby amounts of tin. Gluing with angstrom presicion (pffff, yeah...) until it all fits neatly into the blade!

All the while forgetting to check if it actually works...

The feeling when I checked and it did was amazing! :)

So basically, I added aluminum tape to the backside of the fuller with the runes to increase the amount of light passing through the runes. Then put it all together (after insulation, of course) and started spouting exposition a lá movie villains!

Re: Wargraft Lich King build

That thread is actually where I started ;-) 3D fines are soooo good for reference! Great rip and pepping, though I had to re-unfold the helmet to better suit it for foam. Looks more like this now: Foldout2.jpg Less cutting and more bending :)

For the eyes I use blacklight and UV-reactive lenses. Quite a few months of hobby research before I got that to work the way I wanted :p And testing out lenses was not cheap...

Re: Wargraft Lich King build

Today I transformed the rough sandwiched edges first into bulbous sponge and then into cheddar. :)

I could have gone with spackling, of course, but I'll be using the same technique on the crown, so wanted to try it out.

Hmm, seems I have some issues with the forum interface :p Does anyone know:
1) Why my pictures appear rotated like this?
2) How to correct the annoying typo in the title of the thread?

Re: Wargraft Lich King build

would you mind going into detail for the contacts? that way we dont have to also spend lots of money testing out lenses XD would be greatly appreciated, that effect is really awesome

the pics upload in the format you have them on your pc normally.

the title you can change by going to edit, and then more options.

Actually, EyeOfSauron, I do mind :p Mainly because of issues with UV radiation and eyes and whatnot. The research was very enlightening regarding the dangers of using it, and I haven't really got the conscience to make it publicly available. I'm not saying it is dangerous, but I'm not saying it isn't either. UV radiation comes in harmless, blinding and lethal doses depending on your source and since it's invisible, you might not even notice before it's to late... You gotta know what you do and what you risk here and I'd hate to see some poor sod damage his/her vision because of lack of info on UV, following an idea I provided. Finding the lenses after that is pretty easy, but PM me (or something) if you want more details. It's not that I don't want to share it, it's just that there are things that could go wrong here if you don't know what you're doing. ;-)

I've been doing some experimentation with the undersuit for LK. Since he's got chainmail all the way down (at least on the figurine, can't even be seen in trailers and such) and I have a history of making myself uncomfortable, I decided to try making faux chainmail. I know this method was used in The Quest for the Holy Grail, but you never get to see closeups of their armour. If you look at any still shots, though, you'll quickly realize they've simply painted knitted sweaters and gloves.

So I ordered a pair of dark grey sweaters online and set to painting them various styles. So far, drybrushing has een most successful. Spray painting it was no good, since the cloth simply soaked up the paint. Instead, I tried highlighting the texture with ordinary metallic paint. A decent result, which works at a few meters distance. Unfortunately, it looks like crap up close...

As you can see, it doesn't really hang straight down the way chainmail does, but I believe I can fix that by weighing it down or cutting it to naturally fall that way.

So to improve this, I'll try evening the coat of paint, maybe even spraying on top of the first layer, now that the painted layer has formed a crust on the fibers, and try washing it (not in water, but the paint technique) with black to bring out some more contrast from it.

It's nice to see a Lich King that isn't 3D printed to see how you each approach the different obstacles. Good work. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Your other armors are great as well.

Using sweaters as faux chain mail is a good option and as you said looks good from a distance. But you could also make you're own like they did for LotR using rings cut from pvc pipes. It's a lot more work but falls around the body like real chainmail unlike a knitted sweater.

jip! RvanAken that was also in my thread: http://metalsmithing.wonderhowto.com/how-to/make-chain-mail-armor-from-start-finish-0118499/ :D like I said in the thread the materiel doesn't matter as long as it is'int a cloth type material LOL :D

the problem is really that you need a bandsaw to do the plastic chainmaille. doing it by hand will give you carpal tunnel and take 3 years :D ive been looking for a good wide-knit sweater (im also working on this build for a while now) but so far i had no luck, in europe that is...

also, thx for your insight on the uv lenses. it wont work for me anyway, because i need prescription lenses otherwise im blind xD and those only come without diopter...
i would only use for fotoshoots anyway, but i will just use regular blue lenses and do some light in the helmet so it has a slight light effect(kinda like iron man)

That a really nice step by step tutorial. It's a lot of work but the end result will be worth the time spend. Luckily I own a historical accurate mail hauberk with flat rings, 50% close rings and 50% riveted rings and a mail hauberk with butted rings I bought about ten years ago. So I'm good in the mail department.

Nnnnn, that's a really nice how-to. Now I'm feeling compelled. Must. Resist. Temptation. Of. Real. Mail. Gnnn.

Thee problem with Arthas is that he's wearing mail undreneath all his armour. To make the rest of it more ccomfortable, no doubt...
wowl.jpg
So essentially, I'd be needing a chainmail jumpsuit. Granted, you can skip it beneath the chestplate, but it shows between belt and armour, back of thighs, elbows and circulating the royal jewels. Probably hugging his tight buttocks as well. Not one bit comfortable... And looots of rings. But I am tempted. Veeery tempted...

The ring lord has plastic chainmaille rings for sale. They look good with a little paint and don't weight as much as the real metal rings.

You won't need to skip anything. Under medieval plate armor there was never a full hauberk, just some mail to where the holes I the armor are. Neck, armpit and between the legs (like a mail skirt). So you wont be skipping anything, you'll be historical accurate.

No really under a full plate you wont need a lot of mail.

wow i didnt know that ringlord had plastic rings. now the question is, how hard are those to cut, because the closed rings cost 17 bucks for 1000 and the open ones 50 xD

Shouldn't be to hard. Use a small saw instead of a wire cutter for a straight edge on the rings. A small drop of glue to close them again.
