The Ultimate X-Wing Pilot Thread

Thanks, Ed!
All I really lack now is a good pair of boots. Some of the sites I've checked don't have them in a size 11.
Anyone have any good, current leads for some parade/riding boots that I won't have to take out a loan to afford? :lol

I got mine off ebay for $40 (and I wear a guy's 10-11)

Sometimes Sportsman Guide has them, but I don't think they currently do.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to show off my new leg flare holder I got from Mansugi. It's fantastic. . . the quality is just superb! :)
Here it is with my aluminum flares from Obi1Kenny.

There are even 2 clips on the inside to hook over the tops of the boots!

Thanks, Azman! It's a really great piece. :thumbsup

Thanks Eric.

You might want to fasten those leg flares to the holders. I think Kenny make those flares come with setscrews.

OR you might lose them ;)

I got my boots from here. They are used but really good quality boots and good service - WGPB1.

I see they have size 11 in stock.

Thanks Azman! Hadn't seen that boot link before. I saved it. :thumbsup
Oh, and yes, the flares are ready to be riveted, but they fit nice and snug.
I'll have to "wear test" the setup to see if they slip or move at all.

Here's a couple of pics of the belts from screencaps. I couldn't find very many at all in the group of pics that I have.

The "labeled" picture of Luke is from an older book. . . can't remember which one.

OK I think those pics are just a trick of the light. The straps are ribbed nylon, in all those shots the brighter view is when you see the ribs going across, the belt the ribs are vertical and hence don't reflect as much.

If it proves anything its that they used a fairly strongly ribbed strap source is all.

(oh and yes I am back at RPF after a bit of a break, nice to see everyone again)

I also thought it might be just a trick of the light at first - that's why I tortured myself watching the X-wing pilot scenes again and again. But the belts are definitely a slightly darker color. If it were just a trick of the light, the loops at the bottom of the harness, which are going the same direction as the belt, would look the same color as the belt - but they don't. The belt is always darker.

And compare pictures of all the fan-made suits - when the harness and belt material is the same, it's obvious.

Personally, after all the photos I've compared and all the times I've re-watched the pilot scenes, I am absolutely certain that the belts are darker than the harness.

Ah, but you need to consider most of the fan made costumes may not use the same straps. I know mine are fairly flat, and the Strapworks straps (probably the most comon source) do not have very prominent ridges.

I'm not disputing you, I playing devil's advocate basically, because to me it doesn't seem to make sense that they used two slightly different coloured straps.

Its a real shame the MoM exhibit had the tech belt, that would answer it immediately.

The labelled pic is from the Visual Dictionary btw, and again, look at the leg straps in that pic, the shading on that varies depending on the angle. In fact the loop around the left leg pretty much matches part of the belt in orientation of ribbing and shade.

Also, just to be clear, not trying to win an argument here, but engage in a discussion.

It is a known fact that the Visual Dictionary is fraught with inaccuracies. Many of the pictures, including the one of Luke's X-wing uniform, were pre-production wardrobe shots, and things changed. For example, look at his boots - not what he wore in the film. And his flak vest is on backwards, and the hose from the chestbox is not attached to the flightsuit. So we know the VD is not really a definitive source for info. Also, most of those photos have been re-touched heavily, so grain of salt.

We also know that many of the costume pieces were found objects. If I were a wardrobe buyer for the film, and found finished grey belts that I didn't have to make on the tiny budget George gave me, I would buy them, so there's a good argument for them being a different material/color from the harness straps.

But the main source of my info came from watching the film. Regardless of the lighting, the belt looks darker. In every single shot, in every different lighting condition and from every angle. Take a good look for yourself, especially at the end of the attack briefing scene when they all stand up and are very brightly and evenly lit.

Your point is still possible. In fact I decided to follow up on a speculation somebody made once.

It was suggested that the belts used by the pilots and tech were off the shelf items. Part of some kind of utility/climbing harness. The slots that hold the mini flares were made for holding carabiners.

I was googling about (how wude!) and I can see how its possible, but I didn't find any kind of belt/harness that looked close enough to be related to a mid-70's version of the same thing.

But if it was indeed a found item, then the leg straps would have been made to match the belt and not from the exact same material and that would account for a difference.

Hey fellow pilots. Here is my updated helmet. I just HAD to weather it more. :rolleyes

I just couldn't pick a helmet design since I LOVED them all, so I decided to make my own. I tried to make it look like it could fit into ANH.

Very sweet Brinn. Did you get the rest of the costume to go with it? We need a few more pilots in Ontario :D

THANKS superjedi! :)

Actually JHV, my suit is in for a tune-up. After that, I'll post a pic and maybe look into the legion. Where do I sign? :D

Anyone have suggestions for gloves? I'm looking for some that are pretty close to screen used.

The best solution is to find a base glove that matches and add the cuff.

Frank (Pappy) Bono did that over at Dewback. I forget which glove he used.

I need to find a pair for myself as well.

I went to a local motorcycle shop and got mine for $15.
I just had to remove the strap from the back of them, and they were perfect.
