The Ultimate Marty McFly Jean Jacket Lining Thread

Okay, so maybe the title is a tad dramatic, but no one has ever truly nailed this fabric, and I think on this momentous year in the BTTF universe, it's about time we did something about that.

So first things first, some of you are probably saying "But I thought Marty's jacket had a paisley pattern...aren't we done?" NOPE. The paisley pattern only extended the length of the sleeves. Inside the body of the jacket, we have THIS masterpiece: (Straightened and the exposure corrected so the details are visible in the shadows)

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.03.38 AM.png

Some call this the "Hollywood Lining" others say it's all images from Casablanca...well, I say we settle this once and for all and work on identifying EACH of the scenes definitively, down to the frame or movie poster they appear in. So here's a rough color coding of the distinct scenes and images you can see on the jacket lining:

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 1.59.24 AM.png

Now let's dive a little deeper into each of these...

1. Red - Woman's face and perhaps chest. ("The Red Woman")

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.00.27 AM.png

This image is usually hidden in the shadows, but once properly corrected for exposure, it appears to be a woman with a cleft chin possibly in a low-cut top/dress, though it's hard to tell if the bottom half of the image belongs to the same scene. I initially thought it may be Marilyn Monroe, but the artist definitely intended there to be a cleft-chin, which she lacks, so I don't know what other starlets this could be...especially since I don't remember anyone in Casablanca with that much cleavage. (Then again, that's why I think the bottom half may not belong with the face)

2. Yellow - Man's Face ("The Yellow Fellow")

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.01.06 AM.png

Just a guy's face. The hairline looks like Humphrey Bogart's in Casablanca, but the nose, lips, jaw, and eyes don't seem to be the right shape to be him. Has a certain "Ricky Riccardo" feel to me, but from the lack of an additional scene, it's hard to tell much more.

3. Green - Screaming/Crying Girl ("The Green Scream Queen")

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.01.55 AM.png

Here's the image rotated to be what I believe to be rightside-up. It appears to be a girl or young woman with a center part in her hair possibly running or kneeling on the ground screaming or crying. My first instinct is that it's Dorothy from Wizard of Oz holding Toto (The shaded part in front of her) but my eyes could just be playing tricks on me.

4. Orange - Back of a Woman's Head ("The Orange Bun")

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.02.50 AM.png

Yep, that's it...however, this is one that I think I've identified. I think this one could definitely be from Casablanca. Specifically replicating this shot: (Reversed to match the lining's image orientation)

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.18.33 AM.png

Without more detail in that area, it's a little hard to tell if it might be anything else. However, that hairstyle was popular in early Hollywood, so I will take any other suggestions if you know of a film where a female character has her hair like that.

5. Blue - Man and Woman ("The Blue Two")

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.03.20 AM.png

This is the one that definitely set people looking for Casablanca-related images as it definitely appears to be based on a different frame from this scene: (Or another where her hair is like this)

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 2.22.16 AM.png

Again, I'm open to other ideas, as there are a lot of options here, but THIS is the only drawing that's definitively from Casablanca in my mind.

Now, let's all pool our knowledge and resources to try to finally identify these scenes so we can FINALLY replicate this fabric. So share your thoughts, theories, and speculation (Like on why there's a seam running horizontally through the print, but the design seems uninterrupted, like it was designed to have a seam there) so that together we can all get a little closer to perfection.

So...what do you think, RPF?

-Nick

PS: If anyone has any other shots of the lining, please let me know. If you have a source to protect, we can work something out, I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I DO want to nail what I consider to be the most un-replicated BTTF costume piece.

PPS: We can also work on pinning down the paisley print too, but the Hollywood Lining seems like a much bigger mountain to climb, so I chose to start there.

Definately an interesting topic. I'll skip thru Casablanca tonight and see if I can find anything matching.

This is the headgoonie jackets insides. Thought it should be posted, even if it's a handrawn replica.

Awesome! Yeah, HeadGoonie has the closest thing out there right now so that's sort of the target to beat in my mind. It's fantastic work, but I think we can do better.

Hopefully you can identify a scene or two, so we can start moving forward on this. (I'm personally planning a few movie nights to do the same thing)

Well, no screaming girl in Casablanca which would support the Hollywood movie stars idea.

Then 1. could be Marilyn Monroe (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?), 2. could be James Dean (most likely from Rebel without a cause), 3. could be Judy Garland (from Wizard of Oz), 4. could be, now this is a wild guess :lol, Alfred Hitchcock and finally 5. would be Bogard and Bergman from Casablanca.

That screaming girl is what really started this mystery for me. In my head I remember Dorothy in a similar pose in the Wizard of Oz (possibly through the witch's crystal ball) but I could just be misremembering.

My other main guess for #3 is something from Gone With the Wind. Scarlett maybe?

Thanks for jumping on board so fully! Hopefully once the other BTTF heads get home from their day jobs today they might have some further guesses or insight!

Its a crazy project, but someone's got to do it!

3. Green - Screaming/Crying Girl ("The Green Scream Queen")

I can't find the exact frame, but this particular image is DEFINITELY from The Wizard of Oz, from after the Wizard sets off in the balloon, leaving Dorothy behind. Here's a frame that is VERY close to right:

Screen Shot 2015-02-28 at 6.48.58 PM.jpg

I'll frame by frame it later to see if I can find a more exact match. But the tiny point on the back of #3's head matches her bow. #3 and Dorothy both have a center part in their hair. #3 is holding something dark, Dorothy is holding Toto. Heck, there's even a shape on the right of #3 that could easily be the basket in her arms.

(It might also be from another scene AFTER she gets her makeover in Oz...she cries quite a bit after that point which makes it a bit hard to pin down)

One step closer...

Also, I'm getting pretty certain that #1 is from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, specifically a version of this shot, flipped horizontally: (Heck, there's even a line in #1 that could be her hand coming up to her face)

Lorelei-gentlemen-prefer-blondes-32798775-500-500.png

I have never actually seen Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, so if someone has a better guess for the proper frame, let me know. I'd be willing to give it a watch when I have some free time next week if no one else has the time.

...and if it turns out to NOT be from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, then my second guess is that it's from Some Like it Hot.

TheNickFox, you're on fire! (y)lol The wizard of Oz is strange as there's only one scene where Dorothy really cries out, and that's when she sees her aunt in the witches crystal ball....but there's no toto...

I'm pretty sure the 2. is James Dean but from East of Eden:

Oh, wow! Good call!

I've been doing a lot of other research on this jacket and happened upon something a bit interesting. It seems that Guess either created jackets for other companies, licensed their patterns, or allowed other companies to manufacture under their label because:

Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 5.19.43 PM.png

THAT is not a Guess jacket. I've found between 1 and 4 companies that seem to have jackets that share patterns with Guess from that period. I'm going to keep digging and see what I can turn up.

On another note, I'm completely snowed in today, so I'm making a movie-watching day of it. First up: BTTF1...I want to see if I can get any screenshots of the paisley or Hollywood lining.

If anyone has any higher-res images of the paisley lining, let me know. I'd love to knock it out and get it printed up.

-Nick

TheNickFox, have you checked this site out? Lots of stills and BTS photos. Might help with the paisley...:)
WHOA! Why am I only now finding out about that site?! That's awesome, thanks! There are a few interesting shots but still nothing that focuses on the Paisley enough.

That said, based on my rewatch of the movie last night AND a shot or two from that site, I now believe that the inside-left lining is entirely paisley. Maybe the Hollywood lining was simply a repair job...because it doesn't appear to be used on the other side. (Which actually would make accuracy HUGELY easier)

Thanks again. I'm going to see if I can whip up some Paisley tonight or tomorrow.

-Nick

I noticed too that the hollywood lining seems to be only on Marty's right side. Could it be that it was added because they needed a breast pocket in the jacket? Don't know if the jacket originally had one...

Well, if that's the case, then we can thank Aiwa for this complicated lining since I think that's the only thing he ever carries in that pocket.

As for the paisley, these are the best references we have for it that I was able to find...and it still leaves WAY too many questions.

As part of this research, I've posted the Teen Beat cover on Reddit in the hopes that SOMEONE out there might still have it and it wasn't just thrown out as trash when the winner moved away to college or whatever.

Here's the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/2y9djl/marty_mcflys_jacket_was_given_away_in_a_teen_beat/

If you haven't seen the blog post Head Goonie did to explain how they recreated the lining, they took a similar approach of identifying movie stars and then trying to match it to a certain scene from a movie or photo of them.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing! It seems they didn't get that many of them "right" (Brando?) but still a cool process. And there was this photo posted of the jacket which I hadn't seen before. And if my eyes spot correctly, there's one more head to the far right of the lining.

Well, thanks to that Reddit post, one member over there by the name of FatMinton has some REALLY good ideas about the Red Woman and the Yellow Fellow.

He posted this for the Red Woman (And pointed out that I actually cut off her arm in my selection...which I will fix later today) :

DVAHCZO.jpg

Everything matches up except the face...so we just need to find the EXACT shot they based the lining on.

EDIT: This shot appears to be from a January 7, 1955 press conference announcing "Marilyn Monroe Productions" so there's our starting point. These look like our closest matches unless someone can find something else:

380083_167773966654751_1032183446_n.jpg17565994c378d99333f8fbc8124963b2.jpg

And this for the Yellow Fellow:

csPWPV3.jpg

The Yellow Fellow Is arguably the least specific looking of the images which means that it will likely be the hardest to confirm, but this is as good a guess as any.

So it would seem looking for scenes might actually be leading us astray, since these plus the Casablanca shot are all very similar to publicly available promo shots. So what we may need is to look for full photoshoots for these movie to find ones that match up exactly.

So, thanks to FatMinton, we're still chugging on ahead.

...now all we need is a good source of hi-res classic hollywood promo shots. (Anyone have any ideas?)

-Nick

PS: In the thread, it was also brought up that Dorothy may not be Dorothy. So maybe now with the Promo Shot idea in mind, we can better narrow our scope.

PPS: If we're to accept this, it now seems like we may have to question whether the Casablanca shot is actually from Casablanca. It doesn't seem to match up with any promo shots I'm finding AND would be the only image so far with more than one person in it, which seems a bit odd. Especially given how big of a smile the woman has in it...not very usual for Ingrid Bergman. The guy still might be Humphrey Bogart, but I think we might be looking at two separate scenes.
