Duck, I don't know which one I'm more impressed by...the costume or the TRON mural on the wall! Great job on both! When I saw the mural, the kid voice inside me whined, "I want one!" LOL!
Really Duck... both the wall and the suit, amazing work. How you threw that together for him so quickly is shocking. AND I WANT THAT WALL!!!

Every time I come to this forum and see the different suits people are doing, I find myself rethinking my 'Tronish concept'. My extreme lack of costume construction experience makes me think I can't build anything, then you folks remind me it's just a task one has to get down and do. My 'lesser TekLok' armor will be wired in a few days, then we'll see how I did.

I just NEED to mod my identity disc toy to make it stay lit by itself... Does anyone have a tip on how? :/

I've seen a number of mods on YouTube, but they require the USB hookup, so not really thinking that will help much unless you can create a mobile power pack with USB connection. I guess there is no reason an ELWire setup inserted into the edge chamber and the power pack in the body itself would be all that difficult.

Personally, I am not going the disc route, but mod'ing one of my Battle-Ready Lightsabers (since I build them, seems logical to use one ) and match the blue-toned cyan LED in the blade to the Aqua Blue ELWire I have in the armor plates/helm. My version of a Tron:Legacy Light Baton.

Awesome, awesome thread with tons of great advice! We have a local con coming up this weekend and my son wanted a Sam Flynn costume, so I dug through the posts and got a game plan and whipped this up last night. It's a slightly oversized turtleneck ($6), some ladies black leggings which I sewed to fit him better ($6), 5 sheets of black craft foam (99¢ each) and 10 feet of reflective tape ($13) ... oh, and he got an identity disc while down in New York with my wife visiting friends.

Low tech but really cheap and comfy and he's psyched!

When he was standing in front of the Tron mural I painted him, he said "It's like I'm looking into Kevin Flynn's past!" Weird kid ... but of course, what hope did he have with a freak dad like me.

Thanks for all the awesome research people!

AHHHHHHH I am freaking out! This is so awesome! Look at his facial expressions too with his poses, he is all into it!

Very coo! dad you are. Reasons like this that wish I had a child play to dress up hehe SO CUTE!

There is a very simple hack to get the disk to stay lit up, but it does require some soldering. That being said, I have never soldered anything before and i got this to work. Here is a link to the wiring diagram done by blackfeathers(thank you sir). tron disc mod 3 variant. simple battery mod | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

What i had to infer from the pic (as someone who has no knowledge of wiring) the open solder pads are referring to the negative solder points (which makes sense because you are soldering them to the negative battery wire.) Also if you have never done anything with soldering before this is a great little starter project. Just google how to solder for some beginners tips and make sure that your wire is small and flexible enough to still fit in the disk when you put it back together.

I am currently trying to figure out how to mod my disk too. If rewiring all those LEDs to constantly stay on doesn't work then yes, I will be putting white EL Wire inside my disk and somehow cramming a tiny driver in there. I may have to take the driver apart for its parts and mount inside with a AA battery but I will get a constant light! I am determined. My Quorra suit is going to be rigged with white lights so I need a white disk. Wished they made other colors than the blue.

    kaiwalkerz said: View Post
Maybe you can "fake" this embedded strips putting some thin rubber tape on the sides of the lights, istead of the regular black tape.
Or cut the latex where the lights go, and place the light edges under the latex in those cuts.
Great minds think alike... that is exactly what I was going to do anyway 1st I am going to mount the poster board backed with black masking tape to my latex armor with Super Glue Contact Cement. Already tried a practice piece, holds great and it is flexible! Was worried it was going to eat away at my latex but it doesn't. This is what I am using. Popular stuff. The stores and even online are always out of stock...

"Hedlund’s primary costume is a disc game suit. It was far and away the most difficult for associate costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark and her team to get light into and unsurprisingly it also ate the most ?? battery life, lasting only 10 minutes per charge maximum."

"Sitting down was also impossible due to the fragility of the light connectors. Instead stand-up ‘resting boards’ were made for Hedlund and others to relax on between takes."

    Holy crap.

If this is not one of the most well thought out, extreme and creative fashion films, I'd be shocked if it does not pull in awards for Costume and Special Effects this year.
I agree all the way! I hope this movie is nominated for best costuming FX.

I've been following this thread for a while and mining ideas to help my little sister build her Gem costume. She ended up going with the reflective tape for the lights and ran short on time to prep for Halloween, but here's what she ended up with:

I've been trying to talk her into re-engineering the lights and finishing the whole thing up, but this one might end up getting shelved.

WOW WOW WOW!!! excellent work! Wish we could get everyone making a TL suit together for a photo shoot and to the premiere at the CityWalk. We would blow everyone away!

I'm having some issues with what to use for a hub. Also, how to connect it to the armor... A friend just started working on a Siren costume and is dumbfounded at how she is going to mount her disk and hub to her spandex suit.

    Any advice?
I think I might be making this a bit more difficult than it actually is.
    twinight said: View Post
Might be difficult to picture, but this is what I would do.
Wear a cross-strapped shoulder harness under the lycra (similar to a shoulder holster harness.) Attached several Neodium magnets onto the straps where the hub would go. Attach corresponding magnets on the hub to sandwich the lycra costume in between. No cutting or sagging of the fabric.
BarJedi this is exactly what I was going to say when I read your comment. When I was at ElecTRONica. I studied the SIREN dancer girls costume. She had an invisible zipper center back and the middle of her back mostly likely had a split opening hole for her straps connected to the disc hub mount to pass thru OR, like I did on my Ulala costume to hold my rockets mount to my back, there were two slits on her suit where her straps pass thru, and are attached to the hub, criss cross over her shoulders and snap together in the front of her chest. I did see straps under her suit going over her shoulders which indicated to me that is how her disk hub was mounted to her back. Now the only thing left to do is build the thing the fun part!

Thanks for the compliments guys, but really, it was all the research and experimenting you guys who have been in this thread for 40+ pages did that made making my kid's costume easy. For example, I NEVER would have thought reflective tape would work so well in flash photos. It wasn't until I saw Annisse's Quorra that I thought "Well I'll be damned, that just might work!" And the other reason it only took me one evening is because you can get away with a lot of fudging and cheating design-wise when you are making it for an 8 year old kid. In fact, he was asleep when I was making most of it, so I couldn't fit it to him and make markings and measurements, so I just guessed a lot. If it was for me (6'3" and 190 lbs) and I was at a con, the construction would have to be WAY better and more accurate.

And since you guys seemed to like the mural, here's a few shots before it got all covered by posters and book cases. It's about 8 feet across (the flash washed it out a ton):

Thanks for the compliment Anisse, I use super glue almost for everything, even to make my reactor.
But make sure that Super Glue is flexible. The glue called "Super Glue" in Spain is not, there is an specific one it is "The new and improved...blah blah", the standard is rigid and it might crack.
    Always happy to be helpful.

By the way, my reflective tape does crack in some places unexpectedly.
    Does anyone else's crack?

Do we have any pics of the internals of the discs, to show where the pads are and what lines need to be soldered to them in order to force the disc to remain ON with a switch throw??

Annisse, I have also been checking out the costumes at ElecTRONica, however it tends to look creepy for a guy to be standing there "checking out" the dancers! =o) I get around the creep factor by shooting many images of the Dj, dancers, and the frizbee throwing guys and the next time I'm there giving them a DVD of images (along with my photography business card). Oh, I can't post images here on my iPhone, but I posted a shot of the hub from one of the TRON guys from last Sundays elecTRONica on your facebook page! Maybe you can post it here since I can't seem to find a way on the iPhone. It might help others!

Dear Fellow Programs, I found a way to light the Tron disc an easy way. On Amazon.com The sell these Rave light up shoe laces. It's a lighting element, LED, with a clear tube. The light from the LED goes through the clear tube. This LED is Small, but it can fit the outside only. It's a little clunky. You can glue the clear tube on the outside of the disc. As for Annisse that wants white. The TRON disc can be opened and then replace the Blue LEDS with white ones. I know PEP BOYS carries a lot of LEDS. This I think this is better than soldering and not as time consuming. The clear tube is small enough to put inside the TRON disc. But The LED controller may have to be outside!

I replaced the electronics on the disk with EL wire (2.3mm), 2 layers under the C ring.
Not bright enough to light up the outer ring, only the inner channel glows and it's not very bright. I don't think it's noticeable unless it's dark. I used a small inverter which fits no problem, but the 2AAA battery case from radio shack barely fits. I had to dremel out all the excess plastic that protrudes around the batteries. I replaced the switch with a spst slide switch expoxied in place. The button is now glued in place, but I may just put a PB switch under it for a ring of leds around the perimeter. No driver would be required since 3V led's are common. The LED's that come with the disk are white, not blue. It is the plastic and rubber that is tinted in blue. I sprayed those red with transparent paint, but the white LED's still show white, so red LED's are in order.

Not sure if we covered this sort of thing already, but since there are not too many videos of Sound Driven EL Wire, here's my set that just arrived today.

15ft of HighBrite EL Wire in Aqua Blue, 12v Sound Driver, 12v 2000mah NiMH Battery Pack (should run for, at the least, 5-6 hours each as the driver is said to run at 300mah). Taken as described.

Quorra Costumers: What type of gloves are you getting for your costume? I can't seem to find any long gloves that aren't satin or velvet. Judging by the photo, it looks like she's wearing a sort of spandex material. Then again, I'm not as versed in materials. Help!

Also, what approach would you guys recommend for Quorra's armour? I, sadly, have little costuming skills past designing and drawing. I was going to go the vacuforming route, but the person I know who can do it is not going to be available. Help...again!

I found this pair of boots on ebay. They're the closest I've found, however, they're made out of a stretch material and not leather. I have yet to come across a decent pair of leather wedge boots. From the photos of Quorra it looks like there's a wrap-around on the boots. But the back part (or the underboot) is still definitely leather. Thoughts?

If you haven't cracked your disk open yet then let me tell you that the led's in it are white. you could get some clear acrylic sheet and use the blue rubber outer ring as a templet and cut a clear disk to replace it, diddo with the inner ring. just use a really high grit sandpaper on the acrylic to help diffuse the light.

Ok on to the soldering. The main circuit board is some what symmetrical. There are rows of solder points, the second row in from the left and the second row in from the right are the negative solder points. there will be 3points stacked on top of each other, then a space, then the last point. Its the same for both sides. There should be 4 on each side. You are jumping all of those to one wire that you will solder to the -battrery solder point from the battery's closest to the inner ring. if you unscrew the circuit board and look at the top you can follow the wire from the battery case to the point which will be labeled BAT-. There will be 2 different battery points because the 2 rows of watch battery's power different parts of the toy. The led solder points will be labeled with a letter D and either a + or - sign so you can also double check those.

Sorry about the lack of pictures, hopefully I explained it well enough.

Hi all! I am very excited to finally get my costume finished. Just wanted to ask for some advice. I just ordered my 8 AA Battery Cage, 35 ft of 2.3mm Cool Neon Aqua EL Wire, and a Long Sound Activated Driver. I have my Neoprene suit, boots, helmet, gloves, and Identity disc. All I have to do now is apply the EL Wire...but I'm not sure how to adhere it well to the neoprene. I am thinking about doing the masking tape/black electric tape approach, but i know that won't stick well to the suit.

Any advice on how I can get the wire to stick to the suit easily? I'd like to avoid buying anymore suit material or foam...as I'm trying to keep it low-cost and I am running out of time.

Thanks for the help!!! ...and terrific job on these costumes I'm seeing!!! YAY!
