Thats exactly what i was thinking of doing i ordered the em reflective tape and wanted to see how the glow paint worked with it. On top of that i have el wire i wanted to run along side the tape. Let me know if it works or it that site worked.

So far, I'm going with a mix of blue EL Wire and Reflective Sew-On Tape. Can anyone recommend a solid online resource for blue reflective tape? My first experiments were with white reflective tape, but that sort of clashes with the blue wire..
clashes how? cuz thats what i plan on doing?

Hey ALL. I'm posting again to see how everyone plans to attach their Identity Disk to the back of their costumes. Velcro? Magnets? Hooks? Just curious to see what is working and what isn't. Someone posted earlier magnets that hold a bra together might work. Has anyone tried it yet?

I think any type of small magnets would work... personally I'll be going with velcro since I'm wearing it out for Halloween, I don't want anyone in the clubs to bump me and the magnets move apart and the disc fall off.

Fletcher, I think he just means the white stands out too much on the suit when it's supposed to be blue lighting. I'm sure it reflects ok... but then in flash photography and daylight situations you've got the blue wire on white tape on a black suit. All blue tape and wire would look more uniform.

edit:: just FYI, we were thinking about using a wetsuit as the base ( as I've seen some who have already ) and in my searchings, came across a scuba message board where someone posted that 30 minutes is a long time to be out of the water in a wetsuit... this was a thread in regards to irritation. A more suitable and cost affordable option may be compression wear. We were going to go with that but I opted to make the suits myself with an athletic type fabric that has a texture that slightly resembles the hexagon print and he'll be wearing the compression wear under that ( because it sometimes SNOWS here in Canada on Halloween . BRrrrr )

Here's the fabric I'm making the under armor out of:

I'm pretty happy with the appearance of it considering I'm lacking the time, resources and funds to have a custom print made up to make the costumes with before Halloween. xD AND it was only $8/yd.

It's that dotty-holey-basketball-jersey stuff...but the opposite site. And a bit of a heavier and more solid weave ( it doesn't actually have the little holes in it ).

ps. thanks! can't wait 'til the leather is on there... and pps. does the disc light up? or is it just a coloured frisbee?

edit again: nvm! does everyone know about this one?

I purchased the $7 one from Toys-r-us. I does NOT glow or light-up. Just a frisbee. Looks cool though.

Yeah, I think I might do a combination of magnet and velcro just to be on the safe side. I plan on going to the West Hollywood Halloween Parade and it gets CRAZY (500,000+ People)

For EVERYONE planning to use a wetsuit:
I dont know why I didnt post earlier. I'm a scuba instructor in real life so I can give advice on wetsuits. Normally a wetsuit is made to fit tight DONT do that. It will restrict your circulation and be very uncomfortable. Wetsuits are made to trap in water (and heat) so I suggest punching a bunch of holes so you arent sweating like crazy (unless heat is what you want Snow/Canada people ) You can buy a full body Lycra suit to go on under the wetsuit if you want to be a little more comfortable. That might help in the chafing. Finally most suits you would want to consider are the surf suits 3/2mm. A 7mm suit is 1)expensive $200+ and 2)thick and bulky. The 3/2 surf suits you can pick up for around and under $100 or even less used. (costume purpose only..and make sure to soak it in a cleaner cause I'll tell you what people do in their wetsuits )Wetsuits nowadays are made really well and are more comfortable with polypro lining but the Lycra suit would still help. Just some tips from your friendly actordiver

Has anyone purchased the "baton" yet? Is it worth it? Does it light up, make sounds, etc? Or should I just make one myself out of wood?

Well, the color scheme is not a deal breaker and I'll definitely go with it if push comes to shove. So far I've trimmed a motorcycle armor jacket with the blue EL Wire, and have inserted White Reflective Fabric
Tape underneath the individual chest, arm and back pieces so that when photographed you get an interesting glow through the already existing surface paterns on the jacket. Obviously this is the cheap option in lieu of inserting EL Panels instead.

So to give you an idea, here's the jacket:

ARMOR Jacket Back Body Guard Bike & Motocross Gear

As I said, it looks really nice when photographed with a flash, but to be uniform, I'd rather the reflective tape underneath the armor to give off a blue, as opposed to white glow.

Originally I bought my reflective tape here, which actually reads black in regular light:

Amazon.com: Flat Black Sew-On Reflective Fabric Tape Kit: Automotive

The reflective tape works so well that you can overlap the strips underneath the armor and it doesn't look pieced together when photographed. I think I'd like to find blue tape/fabric that has a thicker width, because I do worry that thinner strips will fall out of place when inserted underneath the armor. I'll have pictures forthcoming to give you a better idea of how the reflective tape looks underneath the armor plates.

No the baton does not light up. It does look cool though. It doesn't have a holder for the baton on your leg. I'll have to find one at a toy store or find a police supply store. The baton has a toy light cycle that comes out of one end when you press a button. It's not as it was advertised on some web sites. It has some screws You might be able to use EL lightwire to make it light up.
I haven't opened it to see inside to see if there's room to put some wire for lights!

re: Tron Legacy Costume

great job on the costume research! it's been a fun read watching everybody's journey on the thought process and research.

thought i'd point out -to those that don't know- there's a hardcover book coming out called 'the art of tron' which will have concept art and other reference pictures!

pictures of sam's helmet (front and back) and other designs have been released in high quality in addition to other artwork/photos. some of them can be found here:

Flickr: GeekFilter

the helmets look more proportioned than a full-on, larger motorcycle helmet. it reminds me of a futuristic, lightweight lacross helmet with visor instead of a cage, or other type of field sport. the hang gliding helmets mentioned remind me of the black guards' from that world.

re: Tron Legacy Costume

Hi guys been lurking for a awhile. Been working on my costume as well.

I purchased the electronic Identity Disc that lights up at Toy's R us in Van Nuys, CA. $20. Its neat and not at all bulky like I thought.

I plan on using magnets for the disc. I will be using Rare earth magnets since they are very powerful and comes in dime size. I use them for minatures and they hold very good. Perhaps in a triangle formation to track the disc right when I slipped it on my back.

I plan on using the SIXSIXONE ASSAULT PRESSURE SUIT. Depending on how others work their lights, I may either go blue program or preferably red, like Rinzler.

I used a portion of the body armor set I bought to fit the identity disk on the back. I cut out two circular, foam portions and glued them to the back. It actually keeps the disk in place as the foam expands out a little bit. I attached a couple of pics.

The light up disk is now available at Toys R Us so you don't have to bother with ordering it on-line and paying shipping.

hmm...that's the actual light up disk? it's so... BLUE. as Quorra and Sam decked out in white lights, I think it's going to stick out like a sore thumb! BOOOOO TO THAT!

But yay for ordering a trillion feet of white el wire in different widths to make a white one. haha

Thanks for the comments on the glove everyone! even though it's such a small piece. It's actually attached to the shirt with the other sleeve now as well. I'm planning on putting a zipper down the front of the under armor shirt since I think the wiring might have to be sewn through the back of it, it'll make it a lot safer ( for the wire ) to put on and take off as opposed to pulling it over my head.

Should have the under armor pieces and skirt done tomorrow for Quorra! Hopefully I'll get Sam's done too since they're pretty simple ( a T shirt and some pants... no problem! ) and then I can start making the armor out of black vinyl.

Just wondering, how is everyone attaching the 'rubber' armor?

As I said, I'm making mine out of vinyl. I think for the pieces that I can wire up separately, I'm going to trim the edges in velcro and put them on as separate pieces with each wear. Annisse made her's almost like a chest plate, which I plan on doing... so it shouldn't be too much hassle. I just want to put it together in a way that's the most easy to put on/take off in the way that will have the least stress or bending of the wiring.

But even if they get all bent up and short out in the couple nights I wear it for Halloween, I won't cry if I have to replace it for future wear at $8/10ft. XD

Yeesh. I tried on the boots ( un modded ), leggings, top w/sleeve-gloves and wig and it's all so... BLACK. it looks so boring and BLAH. I can't wait to get my hands on some reflective tape and start the wiring. *_*

Haven't been here fir awhile. Been stressed about how to light up my suit. I am loving everyone's posts suggestions here and want to try them all. I wish since money is very tight for me lately, I am really liking the glow in the dark paint that last for hours idea. I am going to order a sample, test it under light with some spare reflective tape I had left over and see how long and bright that baby stays lite up! If it truly does stay lite continuously for at least 6 hours even. I am so going down the route instead of all that wiring issues.

I want to do my armour over. Chest, arms and my boot covers. Craft foam just doesn't hold up. I have worn my suit twice and it is all bent out of shape and some seams have come undone and that was from a night of dancing at a club in it and another night posing for a photo shoot I had. I was thinking EVA FOAM might be more durable for the chest n arm armour. Damn. My boot covers looked so good when they were all finished now their completely falling apart

Happy to hear Toys R Us have the light up identity disk avaliable. What about the baton? Think I will be making my own baton. Someone told me when they got their's it was like 15 inches long and too long to be mounted to your leg. It would look awkward.

aelynn000 what is the exact material you used for the hexagon print area of Quorra's bodysuit? It's just an athletic stretch material? It looks pretty good. I kinda want to change out the one I used. Way too flimsy. I want to change alot to my costume.

Thanks all and good luck on your Tron Legacy costume making journey!

Annissė,

I'm curious, what craft foam did you use and how did you shape it? Did you reinforce it with fabric backing? I ask because I was thinking of going down the ol' craft-foam road for the armor on a Sam costume.

Thanks!

I used 2mm craft foam. Good because it was easy to shape it to the bodyform with a heat gun but bad because it is too thin thin and is not durable to stand on its own with all the pulling from moving around dancing and doing poses.

I backed it with felt only and used a black matte vinyl rubber look material for the face material.

Looked good sitting on my dress form but as soon as I put it on after a few hours starting ripping apart. Also due to the tight fit I got the chest and arm amour the craft foam super glue job I did is hanging on to its seams for dear life :P

Thanks for the info Annisse. Good to know. I don't plan to be dancing; maybe just some disc fighting with my kids.

Can you tell me what heat gun you used and what power level? I still need to purchase one but I don't want to get something that will disintegrate the foam. How powerful can you go with this stuff?

Thanks again!

Annisse,
How did you mount your disk?
