It's also nice to know that there's others that are as nit-picky about detail as I am, ahaha. Which is why I come to you all for help. :P

I'm in the process of making the red "Um" dress. (probably wasn't the greatest idea to try to make this as a first dress, but oh well.) Anywho, it's getting close to completion but I'm stumped on the ruffled/frayed bit around the edges. I've looked at a million reference photos, pondered it for hours, but no matter what I try it just doesn't look "right". I can't, for the life of me, figure out exactly how it was done. It appears to be gathered, sewn on to the ribbon diagonally, cut along the black every other stripe, cut at an angle along the edge, then folded and sewn to the piece above it... if that makes any sense. It's more pronounced on the upper body strap piece, but I think it generally has the same effect all around. But then I'll look at it again, and it'll appear as if it isn't pinned or anything, which makes me wonder how the heck it's staying at a angle. Ugh, I don't know. It's driving me insane, it appears simple but it's not turning out the way I'd hoped it would. :\

So... do you guys have any ideas on how this was done?

Also, any advice on what to use for the rope? I've looked EVERYWHERE for drapery rope, but the only thing I found that somewhat resembled it was a foot long curtain binder, hmph. At first I just settled on braiding yard and gold thread together, but now I don't think I'll ever be happy with that "fuzzy" look the yarn has. Is there a special name for rope with that silky/shiny/smooth look to it?
I made my girlfriends dress last Halloween. Was a bit daunting but came out okay. What I did was do the red and black petticoat lower section and the upper bodice as two seperate pieces. This made it so much easier to put on. The stripey part of the dress with all the flowers I used striped drapes. Picked up flowered ribbon at Joannes. I cheated and we changed the colors and picked red flowers. The stripey part I attached upper and lower together. After the petticoat was donned we slipped on the top I draped the lower half over the petticoat. For the rope belt I lucked out and found some drapery rope that looks good. The shoes we picked up at Walmart for cheap. Sewn buttons and tied the ribbon on. Will post pix when I load them back up again.

Re: Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

Was never really happy how this came out but everyone liked it. I put this together in under 3 weeks for well under a 100 bucks and that includes the wig AND the cute white rabbit purse. I was also finishing up my Mad Hatter at the same time.

My GF brought her red sweatshirt that night just in case you're wondering. It was pretty chilly that nite so she kept it on most the evening. I also made the ribbon bandage with Bandersnatch scratch thanks to some rigid collodian. She changed her mind the last minute so we nixed it.

Re: Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

I realize these aren't exactly Tim Burton, but figured you all might enjoy them anyway. Yes we were going for more of a "dark" theme.

Here's a very awkward shot of me with the Red Queen glaring from the background.

And one with the White Queen, who was very upset because her all white tope wasn't finished. hahaha.

The Fat Boys, yes they are twins.

And last but not least, here you can see our host. The Rabbit!
